Book New Hampshire Patterns

Download or read book New Hampshire Patterns written by Ernest Hebert and published by UPNE. This book was released on 2007 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For most people familiar with New Hampshire, the Granite State has two distinct identities. New Hampshire is often depicted as a place of picturesque farms, mountains, forests, and postcard-perfect villages with pretty town commons and colonial era houses. Yet for most of the twentieth century, such New Hampshire cities and towns as Manchester, Berlin and Keene developed small-scale urban industrialized societies dominated by textile, woolen, and paper mills. In the twenty-first century, New Hampshire's duality has given way to a far more varied identity. Radical demographic and economic changes have transformed entire regions. Some towns in Southern New Hampshire have doubled and tripled in size, serving as bedroom communities for greater Boston. Increased property development in the two lakes regions and the Upper Valley continue to transform small town rural life in unexpected ways. This book offers two personal looks at a state whose venerable history stands in lively contrast to its changing times. Over a hundred full-color photographs by Jon Gilbert Fox capture the charm of small town parades and agricultural fairs, as well as the uniqueness of such traditional New Hampshire places as Franconia Notch, Strawbery Banke, and Canterbury Shaker Village. Fox also brings to vivid life more recent cultural phenomena, including the NASCAR races at Loudon and Laconia's annual motorcycle week. Complementing Fox's visual appreciation of New Hampshire are ten essays by Ernest Hebert, one of the state's most beloved native sons. Hebert, a lifelong citizen of New Hampshire, weaves personal experience and family traditions into essays that include meditations on the (former) Old Man of the Mountain, New Hampshire politics, baseball, motorcycles, fly fishing, moose, yard sales, chopping wood, and more. Taken together, Fox's photographs and Hebert's text provide an elegant and richly textured salute to the Granite State.

Book The Indian Heritage of New Hampshire and Northern New England

Download or read book The Indian Heritage of New Hampshire and Northern New England written by Thaddeus Piotrowski and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Years before Jamestown was settled, European adventurers and explorers landed on the shores of Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts in search of fame, fortune, and souls to convert to Christianity. Unbeknownst to them all, the "New World" they had found was actually a very old one, as the history of the native people spanned 10,000 years or more. This work is a compilation of old and new essays written by present-day archeologists, by explorers and missionaries who were in direct contact with the Indians, and by scholars over the last three centuries. The essays are in three sections: Prehistory, which concentrates on the Paleo-Indian, Archaic, and Woodland phases of the native heritage, the Contact Era, which deals with the explorers and their experiences in the New World, and Collections, Sites, Trails, and Names, which focuses on various dedications to the native population and significant names (such as the Massabesic Trail and the Cohas Brook site).

Book Fly Fishing New Hampshire s Secret Waters

Download or read book Fly Fishing New Hampshire s Secret Waters written by Steve Angers and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2020-03-30 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Hampshire's hard and rugged exterior protects one of America's richest native brook trout fisheries. These abundant waters are as varied as the landscape, from Mount Washington to peaceful meadows. The anticipation of the largest mayfly hatch contrasts with the quiet, deep waters of holding pools, and anglers are rewarded when they learn how to read the rivers and streams. Remote areas such as the Perry Ponds may require an entire day, while more accessible waters such as Mink Brook still provide excitement. With more than fifty years of experience, Steve Angers reveals some of his favorite spots and details what it takes to be successful when fishing in the Granite State.

Book Changing Patterns in State Legislative Careers

Download or read book Changing Patterns in State Legislative Careers written by Gary F. Moncrief and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: State legislatures have changed more than perhaps any other American political institution in the last two decades, argue Gary F. Moncrief and Joel A. Thompson. This volume examines those changes and explores their impact on the individual legislator. The editors have assembled a group of leading state legislative scholars, who address changes in the composition of the legislature; entry and exit issues; campaign financing; elections; midsession vacancies; committee systems; and legislative leadership. Changing Patterns in State Legislative Careers covers a timely topic, given the recent movement in a number of states to limit legislative terms. It will be of interest to those who study legislative behavior, American political institutions, organizational change, and elections.
