Book New EU criteria for endocrine disrupters

Download or read book New EU criteria for endocrine disrupters written by Nordic Council of Ministers and published by Nordic Council of Ministers. This book was released on 2018-08-30 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Endocrine disruptors (EDs) are substances that adversely affect hormone function. The effects by EDs are thought to depend on both dose and timing of exposure, especially during foetal development. The upcoming EU regulation on identification of EDs, application biocides and pesticides, will have an impact on all actors of the food chain. The consequences of a ban of EDs in foods were discussed in a Nordic workshop (Uppsala, 29-30 Nov 2016) where risk assessors and managers from Nordic food authorities, industry, trade associations, consumer organizations and researchers were represented. It was recognized by all participants that a ban was particularly challenging for the production chain since there are few viable alternatives. A harmonized EU legislation based on scientific risk assessment was preferred compared to national specific legislation as it treats all the actors equally.

Download or read book Endocrine Disruptors written by Alina Dinu and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Endocrine disruptors are chemical substances present in many products used in daily life, which interact with the hormonal system and can disrupt its proper functioning. There is a growing interest in understanding endocrine disruptors and progress has been made on both the scientific and regulatory side. However, the topic remains of high concern at decision-making and societal levels because of the challenges it continues to pose. This paper provides a desk research-based overview of the key moments of the (scientific and regulatory) debate on endocrine disruptors, with a focus on the latest developments at European level, namely Commission Regulation (EU) 2018/605, which establishes scientific criteria for endocrine disruptor properties, and the Commission communication published in November 2018, 'Towards a comprehensive European Union framework on endocrine disruptors', in the particular context of plant protection products

Book Memorandum on Endocrine Disruptors

Download or read book Memorandum on Endocrine Disruptors written by and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: REGULATION (EC) No 1223/2009 on cosmetic products states in Article 15 No. 4. "When Community or internationally agreed criteria for identifying substances with endocrinedisrupting properties are available, or at the latest on 11 January 2015, the Commission shall review this Regulation with regard to substances with endocrine-disrupting properties." The European Commission established two expert groups with orientation on various scientific and policy aspects related to this topic. The "Ad hoc group of Commission Services, EU Agencies and Member States" focused on policy issues. The "Endocrine Disruptors Expert Advisory Group" reflected on scientific issues relevant to endocrine disruptors, not specific to any regulatory framework, including advice/orientation on scientific criteria for the identification of endocrine disrupting chemicals. In both groups, industry associations, non-governmental organisations, European Commission staff, EU Agencies and Member States were represented. The outcome of "the Endocrine Disruptors Expert Advisory Group" meetings is summarised in two reports [JRC 2013a, b]. For preparing the definition of the criteria in the EU, the Commission asked the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) to deliver a Scientific Opinion on the hazard assessment of endocrine disruptors (EDs) which was published in 2013 [EFSA 2013]. Endocrine disruptors may be identified on a case-by-case basis as substances of very high concern (SVHCs) under Article 57(f) of REACH Regulation, where there is scientific evidence of probable serious effects to human health or to the environment, which give rise to an equivalent level of concern as for CMR or PBT/vPvB substances. ECHA has set up a working group of experts on ED to deal with this issue under REACH regulation.

Book Screening Methodology to Identify Endocrine Disruptors According to Different Options in the Context of an Impact Assessment

Download or read book Screening Methodology to Identify Endocrine Disruptors According to Different Options in the Context of an Impact Assessment written by and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several pieces of EU legislation regulate the marketing and use of chemical substances. While several regulations, including the regulations on Plant Protection Products (PPPR), Biocidal Products (BPR) and Chemicals (REACH), include provisions for endocrine disrupting substances (EDs), objective scientific criteria are lacking. In order to evaluate the potential health, socio-economic and environmental impacts of applying four different options for criteria defining EDs across these pieces of legislation, the Commission initiated an Impact Assessment (IA). This IA has been supported by two studies, focusing on (a) selection of substances for the IA and the screening of their potential for identification as EDs according to different options for defining criteria for identification of endocrine disruptors and (b) the potential impacts of various policy options on health, environment, trade, agriculture and socio-economy. This report describes a screening methodology that has been developed by the JRC to support the first study which has assessed almost all pesticide and biocide active ingredients and a selection of substances falling under REACH, the Cosmetic Products Regulation and the Water Framework Directive. This screening methodology is not intended to replace an in-depth risk assessment process, and the results obtained are not intended to pre-empt regulatory conclusions that may eventually be made under different pieces of EU legislation.

Book OECD Conceptual Framework for Testing and Assessment of Endocrine Disrupters as a Basis for Regulation of Substances with Endocrine Disrupting Properties

Download or read book OECD Conceptual Framework for Testing and Assessment of Endocrine Disrupters as a Basis for Regulation of Substances with Endocrine Disrupting Properties written by Nordic Council of Ministers and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The existing EU chemical legislation only covers some of the effects caused by endocrine disruption. In the proposal for the new REACH system, endocrine disrupters are covered by the authorisation procedure based on a case-by-case assessment, but no indication of criteria for the assessment is given. Several toxicological and ecotoxicological screening tests for predicting endocrine disrupting properties of a chemical are now under development and international validation within the OECD, but it will probably take several years before the full range of validated testing methods and criteria are developed. In the meantime there is a need for guidance on how to interpret test results from existing test methods and how to identify a substance as an endocrine disrupter. Regulatory instruments that can be used towards endocrine disrupters should also be considered in this interim period. The aim of this project has been to investigate if and how the OECD Conceptual Framework for Testing and Assessment of Endocrine Disrupters can be used as a basis for regulatory initiatives towards endocrine disrupters. The report includes an assessment of the tests in the OECD Conceptual Framework, including specification of the endpoint for the test and reliability and relevance for effects in humans. This report is expected to serve as a basis for the Nordic contribution to the discussions in EU on interpretation and use of test results indicating endocrine disruption for regulatory purposes and furthermore, how to integrate endocrine disrupters in the new EU chemicals regulation

Book Pesticide Policy and Politics in the European Union

Download or read book Pesticide Policy and Politics in the European Union written by Emanuela Bozzini and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-23 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the regulation of pesticides in the European Union in order to reveal the complex, controversial, and contested nature of an assessment system proudly declared by the EU to be ‘the strictest in the world’. The current regulatory framework is based on Regulation 1107/2009, which substantially reformed the previous system. The analysis describes the new criteria and procedures for the authorization of active substances to be used in the production of pesticides, traces the lengthy policy formulation process, and identifies factors that made policy change possible. Further, the book illustrates the current controversies that characterise the implementation of Regulation 1107/2009: the ban of pesticides harmful to pollinators, the renewal of the authorization of glyphosate, and the definition of criteria for the assessment of endocrine disruption. The author provides information on policy outcomes and highlights persisting shortcomings in the enforcement of EU regulation. This book will appeal to students and scholars from a variety of disciplines, including political science, political sociology, and public policy.

Book Sicker Fatter Poorer

Download or read book Sicker Fatter Poorer written by Leonardo Trasande and published by Houghton Mifflin. This book was released on 2019 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A leading voice in public health policy and top environmental medicine scientist reveals the alarming truth about how hormone-disrupting chemicals are affecting our daily lives--and what we can do to protect ourselves and fight back. Lurking in our homes, hiding in our offices, and polluting the air we breathe is something sinister. Something we've turned a blind eye to for far too long. Dr. Leonardo Trasande, a pediatrician, professor, and world-renowned researcher, tells the story of how our everyday surroundings are making us sicker, fatter, and poorer. Dr. Trasande exposes the chemicals that disrupt our hormonal systems and damage our health in irreparable ways. He shows us where these chemicals hide--in our homes, our schools, at work, in our food, and countless other places we can't control--as well as the workings of policy that protects the continued use of these chemicals in our lives. Drawing on extensive research and expertise, he outlines dramatic studies and emerging evidence about the rapid increases in neurodevelopmental, metabolic, reproductive, and immunological diseases directly related to the hundreds of thousands of chemicals that we are exposed to every day. Unfortunately, nowhere is safe. But, thanks to Dr. Trasande's work on the topic, and his commitment to effecting change, this book can help. Through a blend of narrative, scientific detective work, and concrete information about the connections between chemicals and disease, he shows us what we can do to protect ourselves and our families in the short-term, and how we can help bring the change we deserve.
