Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mammoth Cave, Kentucky The wonderful work of water of water in sculpturing the surface of the earth is matter of common observation and of common remark. Hill and valley, gorge, canon and waterfall, all have been seen in intimate relation; no rock so hard that it can forever resist the action of the stream; no mountain mass so great that it will not some time yield entirely to water;no valley so deep it may not be graven deeper or even filled to top by the transporting power of running streams. These changes all occur on the surface, and from our familiarity with them fail, often, to engage our close attention. Download or read book Pictorial Guide to the Mammoth Cave Kentucky Classic Reprint written by Horace Martin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-11 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pictorial Guide to the Mammoth Cave, Kentucky Here bending past the edge of a jagged and abrupt glen, and then breaking into a sweep of meadow or budding foliage. At length we arrived at the hotel, a dismal and queer-looking building, the roof of which was seamed with the chance sky-lights made by age and decay, and the service of which was performed by domestics, who were scrupulously bent on following their own fancies in the management of our table, for here it was that we breakfasted. In truth, the meal itself was excellent, and the room in which it was held, considering the time of the year, was in good order - Jenny Lind's presence, we presume, having, as is usual in hotels, railways, and steamboats, made an extra season. Fortunately, we here met with Mr. Croghan, the proprietor of the estate in which the Cave is situated, a most gentlemanly and delightful person, who did us the honors of his subterranean dominions in the most agreeable manner. It was about twelve o'clock that we started in his company for the Cave, and to avoid the pertinacious curiosity of the guests, who had b collected here by the report of Made moiselle Lind's v he conducted us by a less frequented pathway than the one usually taken to its mouth. Lamps were now procured, and as ithappened, we were fortunate enough to be placed in the hands of the very Prince of Guides. This was Stephen, who must be a well known character to those who visit this palace of the Gnomes. Half Indian and half negro, (a singularly rare mixture of blood, ) he has been living in or about this cavern for the last fifteen years, until he himself has begun to fancy it would be impossible to quit it. Although of course, uneducated, he is essentially a clever man, and has contrived to pick up a vast amount of information from associating with every description of persons. Now he sports a bit of science, derived from some of the more learned visitors he has con. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Subterranean Wonders: Mammoth Cave and Colossal Cavern, Kentucky The visitor to these caverns must not: forget the surface world when he walks through their immense gorges, their magnificent avenues, their Titanic halls, their star-bedecked domes. On every hand he will see a wealth of features which always emphasize the aspects of the outer world and explain them in a new language. He will see solution so slow that it is measured by tens of thousands of decades; he will note crystallization so tedious that he will be driven to madness should he attempt to compass the years that have passed since the process began. Should he question the fossil forms which sometimes thickly stud the cliffs and ledges along which he will pass, they might tell to him a story beside which the wildest creation of the Orient would appear but as a tale of the nursery. In a thousand ways will he be impressed with the persistency of Nature's force ful methods. If he be a man accustomed to reflection he will come to the upper world a wiser man; if he be of poetic turn the sombre shades through which he has just passed, the great avenues opening beyond into regions of infinite gloom, the lovely crystals of purest ray serene that reflect the radiance of his light into still another corner of eternal darkness, and instead of revealing its outlines or a new beauty but extends its bounds, then his fancy will take a new direction and his poems a different tenor. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mammoth Cave of Kentucky: An Illustrated Manual In 1897 two cave-hunters, Horace Carter Hovey and Richard Ellsworth Call, at first separately then jointly, prepared a manual of the Mammoth Cave. Both of them had made frequent and prolonged visits to the Cave, and were able to say that they had personally seen every part of it then known. They had previously written articles for popular and scientific periodicals, and their membership in scientific societies in this and other lands aided their research. Originally their work was of composite authorship, in the sense that any chapter written by one would be revised by the other. Their aim was to give the latest and most exact word as to cavern history and scenery, heights, depths, dis tances, and magnitudes. Facts not for the first time found here in print were compiled from authentic sources with acknowledgments. Book A Guide Manual to the Mammoth Cave of Kentucky Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Guide Manual to the Mammoth Cave of Kentucky Classic Reprint written by Charles W. Wright and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-22 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Guide Manual to the Mammoth Cave of Kentucky The object of the author of this little work is to place before the public, in a popular style, the Chemistry, Geology, and Zoology, of the Mammoth Cave, together with a brief description of all the rooms, avenues, domes, rivers, etc., that are worth the trouble of exploring. Anything like an accurate description of the Cave has not been attempted. In fact, such an effort, from the very nature of the subject, would be attended with failure. The beauty, sublimity and grandeur of the Mammoth Cave, to be appreciated, must be seen. The awful, overpowering silence, the deep darkness, together with a knowledge of the fact that the time which nature required to build this subterranean region is lost in the mists of infinity, produce a combination of emotions which are never experienced in the upper world. The sole object aimed at, has been to furnish to those who have never visited the Cave, some idea of its size and formation, and to those who wish to explore it, a guide-manual, which will do away with the necessity of taking notes, and from which they can select those point, which, should their time be limited, they are most desirous of visiting.
