Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carlos Stegmann is a civil engineer whose disposition always led him to have a main interest in the multidisciplinary overview of large and complex planning studies, a subject on which he accumulated a 40-year experience, having acted as coordinator of many such studies. It was this diposition, this innate tendency always to strive for the composite whole, and the application of his experience to the subject of morals, which originated the interdisciplinary insights of his thesis of moral evolution, which is the subject of this book. It is important to stress this interdisciplinary experience, for to be able to produce credible results, an attempt to explain something as pervadingly inclusive as human behavior must include all the manifestations of this behavior, from the cognitive to the physiological. No other work on human morals offers such an interdisciplinary approach, and the inquiry presented in this book may be considered the first of this kind.

Download or read book Shadows of Power written by Jean Hillier and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shadows of Power examines public policy and in particular, the communicative processes of policy and decision-making. It explore the important who, how and why issues of policy decisions. Who really takes the decisions? How are they arrived at and why were such processes used? What relations of power may be revealed between the various participants? Using stories from planning practices, this book shows that local planning decisions, particularly those which involve consideration of issues of 'public space' cannot be understood separately from the socially constructed, subjective territorial identities, meanings and values of the local people and the planners concerned. Nor can it be fully represented as a linear planning process concentrating on traditional planning policy-making and decision-making ideas of survey analysis-plan or officer recommendation-council decision-implementation. Such notions assume that policy-and decision-making proceed in a relatively technocratic and value neutral, unidirectional, step-wise process towards a finite end point. In this book Jean Hiller explores ways in which different values and mind-sets may affect planning outcomes and relate to systemic power structures. By unpacking these and bring them together as influences on participants' communication, she reveals influences at work in decision-making processes that were previously invisible. If planning theory is to be of real use to practitioners, it needs to address practice as it is actually encountered in the worlds of planning officers and elected representatives. Hillier shed light on the shadows so that practitioners may be better able to understand the circumstances in which they find themselves and act more effectively in what is in reality a messy, highly politicised decision-making process.

Book Planning Politics and the State

Download or read book Planning Politics and the State written by Nicholas Low and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1990. John Maynard Keynes once made the bold prediction that the three- hour work day would prevail for his grandchildren's generation. Seventy years later, the question of working time is as pertinent as it was at the inception of the 40-hour week. Not until now, however, has there been a global comparative analysis of working time laws, policies and actual working hours. Despite a century-long optimism about reduced working hours and some progress in legal measures limiting working hours, this book demonstrates that differences in actual working hours between industrialized and developing countries remain considerable – without any clear sign of hours being reduced. This study aims to offer some suggestions about how this gap can begin to be closed. most basic questions facing planning theory and practice today. The author argues that it is not plans that determine the shape of cities, but political processes. In the 1980s state planning came under siege; planners had to justify their existence to politicians, the business world and the public. Though planning must still be accountable, neither the complete domination of the market nor traditional post-war planning ideologies are wholly acceptable in the 1990s. A new agenda and a major rethinking of planning from first principles is required - but what form should this take? Showing that political theory provides the proper foundation for understanding planning practice, the book explores in turn assenting and dissenting planning paradigms. Exploration of the former begins with Weber and moves through pluralism, corporatism and neo-liberalism. Dissenting theory is organized around the work of Marx: orthodox neo-Marxism, Gramsci's 'philosophy of praxis', the critical theory of the Frankfurt School, and the work of Habermas. The author concludes with a presentation of an integrated political perspective upon planning and the state.
