Book excerpt: Affect and Emotion includes a variety of chapters by some of the most prominent scholars in the area of emotions and leadership, as well as chapters by rising stars. These chapters chart the direction of future research in affect and leadership in four main areas. First, several of these chapters make a convincing argument that leaders use emotional labor and other forms of emotional displays to influence followers and team members. Leaders may use emotional labor to manage relational identities, or to create favorable impressions on followers and to create trust. Leaders' active emotional displays increase vision related performance and perception of transformational leadership. Second, one chapter reveals how emotions play an important role in leadership at every level, from within-person to organization-wide leadership. Leader's emotional labor plays an important role in several of these levels, with the exact method of performing emotional labor varying by level. A second chapter also examines levels of leadership, with a particular examination of the effects of leader emotional labor on close and distant leadership. Third, several of the chapters examine emotions from the authentic leadership and positive leadership perspectives, and two of these chapters focus on how psychological capital and authentic leadership skills help leaders be resilient and overcome obstacles. Fourth, two of the chapters show the role of affect and friendship ties to leadership research. One of these chapters examines the need to develop psychometrically sound measures of affect and friendship, whereas the other develops a model of how affect influences social network ties and informal leadership emergence. Taken together, these chapters illustrate four important research trends in emotions and leadership that are likely to grow in importance in the coming years.

The UKSS originally came together in 1978 as the Barford Group (the first meetings were held in the town of Barford), comprising academics from the four institutions that incorporated departments which primarily were con cerned with developing the theory and practice of so-called systems scienc- namely Aston University, City University, Lancaster University and the Open University. The meetings of the Barford Group were deemed to be successful, so much so that a decision was made to widen its horizons to incorporate more generally those of the United Kingdom systems community (a diffuse number of academics and practitioners) - hence the title UKSS. The society, ten years later, is extant and has achieved new levels of success in the last few years in terms of rising membership and international reputation. The membership is now drawn from a wide variety of academic and commercial and industrial organisations, and from most reaches of the nation. There is also an international contingent in the membership. It is right that there should be such diversity since the UKSS is founded on the notion of equality (of creed, sex, race, class and so on ••• ). This community is "glued" together by the Society's own publication, Systemist, as well as through workshops and now this conference.

The United Kingdom Systems Society (UKSS) was formed in 1978. Today it has over 300 members and is committed to the development and promotion of "systems" philosophy, theory, concepts and methodolo gies for improving decision making for the benefit of organizations and wider society. The first UKSS International Conference was held at the University of Hull in July ofHuddersfield 1989. Since then we have held International Conferences at the Universities (1991) and Paisley (1993). The UKSS International Conferences are now an established biannual event and this, our fourth international conference, will be jointly hosted by the Universities of Hull and Humberside. Systems science is considered to be a trans-discipline which promotes critical and effective intervention in complex organisational and social problem situations. As such it traverses "hard", through "soft" to "critical" systems thinking and methodologies. Yet, despite the currently robust state of the UKSS the systems movement cannot be described as an international movement: different subdisciplines are at different stages of development and are often engaged in pursuing their own particular interests and themes with little "conversation" between the subdisciplines despite their common interest in systems.

The Conference sessions were organised around topics such as: Organisations and Control; Social Effects of Policies; Conflict Resolution; The Systems Concept; Models, Decisions and Operational Research. An examination of the published proceedings (J.R.Lawrence ed., 1966, Operational Research and the Social Sciences, Tavistock, London) reveals a distinct contrast between the types of contribution made by the representatives of the two academic communities involved. Nevertheless, the Conference served to break down some barriers, largely of ignorance about the objects, methods and findings of each concern. In the ensuing twenty five years, although debate has continued about the relationship between OR and the social sciences, mutual understanding has proved more difficult to achieve than many must have hoped for in 1964.
