Download or read book Kissing Cousins written by Frances Bartkowski and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2008-09-18 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since DNA has replaced blood as the medium through which we establish kinship, how do we determine with whom we are kin? Who counts among those we care for? The distinction between these categories is constantly in flux. How do we come to decide those we may kiss and those we may kill? Focusing on narratives of kinship as they are defined in contemporary film, literature, and news media, Frances Bartkowski discusses the impact of "stories of origin" on our regard for nonhuman species. She locates the role of "totems and taboos" in forming and re-forming kinship categories-groupings that enable us to tie the personal to the social-and explores the bestiary, among the oldest of literary forms. The bestiary is the realm in which we allegorize the place of humans and other species, a menagerie encompassing animals we know as well as human-animal chimeras and other beings that challenge the "natural" order of the world. Yet advances in reproductive technologies, the mapping of genomes, and the study of primates continually destabilize these categories and recast the dynamic between the natural and the cultural. Bartkowski highlights the arbitrariness of traditional kinship arrangements and asks us to rethink our notions of empathy and ethics. She shows how current dialogues concerning ethics and desire determine contemporary attitudes toward issues of care, and suggests a new framework for negotiating connection and conflict.

In the seemingly idyllic town of Rundle Junction, Bennie and Walter are preparing to host the wedding of their eldest daughter Clem. A new community has moved to Rundle Junction, threatening the social order and forcing Bennie and Walter to confront uncomfortable truths about the lengths they would go to to maintain harmony. Meanwhile, Aunt Glad, the oldest member of the family, arrives for the wedding plagued by long-buried memories of a scarring event that occurred when she was a girl in Rundle Junction. As she uncovers details about her role in this event, the family begins to realize that Clem's wedding may not be exactly what it seemed. Clever, passionate, artistic Clem has her own agenda. What she doesn't know is that by the end, everyone will have roles to play in this richly imagined ceremony of familial connection-a brood of quirky relatives, effervescent college friends, ghosts emerging from the past, a determined little mouse, and even the very group of new neighbors whose presence has shaken Rundle Junction to its core. Book excerpt: A Kirkus Reviews Best Book of the Year! A multicultural family story that celebrates kindness and differences Lila is excited for her cousins Takeo and Rosie to visit. They're going to ride bikes, paint, and camp together! But when the cousins arrive, everything's wrong: Rosie and Takeo are better painters than Lila, have skateboards instead of bikes, and don't want to camp outside. Lila is terribly disappointed until the cousins make her a surprise: a big banner for their "best cousin" Lila! Inspired by the author's own large, diverse family, When the Cousins Came is a sensitive story about insecurity, hosting, and friendship. Katie Yamasaki's tale, paired with bright mixed-media art, reminds children that negative thoughts and anxiety over exclusion don't always translate to reality, and that even when plans go wrong you can still have a good time together.

Download or read book Cousins and Strangers written by Chris Patten and published by Times Books. This book was released on 2013-12-17 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A frank and controversial assessment of the United States, Great Britain, and Europe, and the stakes for all three if the West breaks apart Despite the efforts of President Woodrow Wilson, America washed its hands of Europe after the First World War. After the Second World War, it stayed involved, helping to preserve freedom in half of Europe, and creating an infrastructure of global governance that gave the world a remarkable half century of (for the most part) peace and prosperity. In Cousins and Strangers, Chris Patten, one of Europe's most distinguished statesmen, scrutinizes the final years of the twentieth century and how the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 fundamentally changed the nature of this Western alliance. Today, the threat of terrorism, economic competition from Asia, and a seemingly unbridgeable cultural divide have strained the alliance to a moment of reckoning. Patten argues that America's status as the only superpower must be reined in, but he also warns Europe against too ardently challenging U.S. leadership. He questions whether Britain needs to choose between bolstering its "special relationship" with the United States and forging a greater role in a united Europe. Drawing on more than three decades of experience in government and international diplomacy, Patten brilliantly investigates the three-way relationship among Britain, Europe, and America and how all three must adapt to cope with the economic and political challenges of the twenty-first century.

Book Hissing Cousins

Download or read book Hissing Cousins written by Marc Peyser and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2016-03-08 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Richmond Times-Dispatch Best Book of the Year When Theodore Roosevelt became president in 1901, his beautiful and flamboyant daughter was transformed into “Princess Alice,” arguably the century’s first global celebrity. Thirty-two years later, Alice’s first cousin Eleanor moved into the White House as First Lady. The two women had been born eight months and twenty blocks apart in New York City, spent much of their childhoods together, and were far more alike than most historians acknowledge. But their politics and personalities couldn’t have been more distinct. Democratic icon Eleanor was committed to social justice and hated the limelight; Republican Alice was an opponent of big government who gained notoriety for her cutting remarks. The cousins liked to play up their rivalry—in the 1930s they even wrote opposing syndicated newspaper columns and embarked on competing nationwide speaking tours. When the family business is politics, winning trumps everything. Lively, intimate, and stylishly written, Hissing Cousins is a double biography of two extraordinary women whose entwined lives give us a sweeping look at the twentieth century in America.

Book excerpt: Cousins: The Early Years of Jesus and John the Baptist is a story that starts out with John the Baptist's imprisonment by Herod Antipas. John, while in the dungeon, is thinking about his parents and the times with his cousin Jesus the Messiah. John reminisces of the wedding of his parents, Zacharias and Elisabeth, and of the childhoods of Joseph and Mary, the parents of Jesus Christ. He takes us through their births and journey together as two young boys that were chosen by God to bring their people back to Him. We see why God has entrusted Joseph to be the father of His only begotten Son. We learn why God chose Mary, who was virtuous, righteous, loving, and holy, even after her faith was tested by a Roman soldier. We see how John the Baptist, at a very young age and to his death, did not grasp the coming of the kingdom of Jesus Christ. We see how Jesus, from a very young age, knew his purpose here on earth and was brilliant beyond His years and eager to learn. Jesus takes in everything he observes and speaks of them later in ministry. We see how childhood friends of Jesus, Mary, and Martha, with their brother Lazarus, whom Jesus raised from the dead, knew that Jesus was the Messiah. We see how loving Jesus was with his siblings and grandparents. The book tells the lives of Jesus and John up until their ministries. This is a must-read for the whole family! I am in no way trying to diminish the deity of our Lord but to amplify that He is our Lord and Savior and He came to earth for our salvation. Thank you for reading this book! 36

Download or read book Cousins written by Geraldine Gardner Girard and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2015-12-16 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a story set in the North Carolina Mountains. It is about two families of Scotch-Irish and also French decent. It centers in on one 11 year old girl and her 6 year old sister and two boy cousins, one is 12 and the other one is 8 years old. The story begins in the year 1914. The author got many of the story ideas for this book from an elderly lady who was doing an oral history for the Rural Life Museum Director at the college where the author of this book studied teaching. The author worked in the library. But this sweet lady decided she wanted to write her story and she requested someone to illustrate it and this is what brought the two together. While the elderly lady wrote her local history book, the college asked the author and the lady to do an Elderhostel Class for the college. The elderly lady told the author many stories she did not put in her book. One of these stories became the Fire and another the Grandfather. There really was a Frenchman who came to this community with his trained monkey and an organ grinder. And that monkey is really buried in the family cemetery. The author also included stories that her father told her such as the Ghost. This story was of a haunting lady that killed her husband in the early 1800s. She was hung for it in 1838 and this too is a true story from these mountains.
