Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discusses diagnosis and treatment of diseases and organisms afflicting nearly 500 genera of ornamental plants grown outdoors, under glass, or in the home. Explains when and how to use the most effective fungicides, insecticides, and other control materials and practices. The fifth edition of the official publication of the New York Botanical Garden identifies new diseases, recognizes the spread of many known diseases to a wider range of host plants, and reflects up-to-date control methods. New illustrations have been added and there are expanded discussions on fungicides, bactericides, and miticides.

Book Element Concentrations Toxic to Plants Animals and Man

Download or read book Element Concentrations Toxic to Plants Animals and Man written by L. P. Gough and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investigators have long recognized the importance of certain elements, commonly called "minerals," in the diet of humans and animals and in the soil that supports plants, in that these elements are essential for the life or optimum health of the organisms. Deficiencies of 20 to 24 elements in animals and man and of 13 to 18 elements in plants have been recognized. At the same time, an understanding of the responses of these organisms to the insult of toxic concentrations of these and other elements also has been of interest. More recently, concern has arisen regarding the effects of an organism's exposure to the more subtle chronic and subchronic concentrations of certain elements that industrial and other human activities are releasing into the environment.

Book Ecological Impacts of Non Native Invertebrates and Fungi on Terrestrial Ecosystems

Download or read book Ecological Impacts of Non Native Invertebrates and Fungi on Terrestrial Ecosystems written by David Langor and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-01-21 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the arrival of Europeans about 500 years ago, an estimated 50,000 non-native species have been introduced to North America (including Hawaii). Non-native species figure prominently in our lives, often as ornamentals, sources of food or pests. Although many introduced species are beneficial, there is increasing awareness of the enormous economic costs associated with non-native pests. In contrast, the ecological impacts of non-native species have received much less public and scientific attention, despite the fact that invasion by exotic species ranks second to habitat destruction as a cause of species loss. In particular, there is little information about the ecological impacts of hyper-diverse groups such as terrestrial fungi and invertebrates. A science symposium, Ecological impacts of non-native invertebrates and fungi on terrestrial ecosystems, held in 2006, brought together scientists from the USA and Canada to review the state of knowledge in this field of work. Additional reviews were solicited following the symposium. The resulting set of review/synthesis papers and case studies represents a cross-section of work on ecological impacts of non-native terrestrial invertebrates and fungi. Although there is a strong focus on Canadian work, there is also significant presentation of work in the northern USA and Europe.

Book Risk Assessment in Conservation Biology

Book Essays on the Early History of Plant Pathology and Mycology in Canada

Download or read book Essays on the Early History of Plant Pathology and Mycology in Canada written by Ralph H. Estey and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1994-03-29 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ralph Estey chronicles the history of plant pathology and mycology in Canada from this early period to the late 1940s when it entered its professional, biochemically oriented phase. His major topics include the pioneering roles of entomologists and horticulturists in the genesis of plant pathology; the influence of diseases in potatoes, grain, and forage crops on early developments in plant pathology and mycology; the factors prompting the development of the relatively new sciences of forest pathology and nematology; and the teaching of plant pathology. Estey discusses early legislation in Canada pertaining to plant diseases and the faltering first steps toward international regulation, and provides a detailed history of mycology province by province.

Download or read book Plant Disturbance Ecology written by Edward A. Johnson and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2020-10-21 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Disturbance ecology continues to be an active area of research, having undergone advances in many areas in recent years. One emerging direction is the increased coupling of physical and ecological processes, in which disturbances are increasingly traced back to mechanisms that cause the disturbances themselves, such as earth surface processes, mesoscale, and larger meteorological processes, and the ecological effects of interest are increasingly physiological. Plant Disturbance Ecology, 2nd Edition encourages movement away from the informal, conceptual approach traditionally used in defining natural disturbances and clearly presents how scientists can use a multitude of approaches in plant disturbance ecology. This edition includes nine revised chapters from the first edition, as well new, more comprehensive chapters on fire disturbance and beaver disturbance. Edited by leading experts in the field, Plant Disturbance Ecology, 2nd Edition is an essential resource for scientists interested in understanding plant disturbance and ecological processes. - Advances understanding of natural disturbances by combining geophysical and ecological processes - Provides a framework for collaboration between geophysical scientists and ecologists studying natural disturbances - Includes fully updated research with 5 new chapters and revision of 11 chapters from the first edition

Book Short Rotation Woody Crop Production Systems for Ecosystem Services and Phytotechnologies

Download or read book Short Rotation Woody Crop Production Systems for Ecosystem Services and Phytotechnologies written by Ronald S. Zalesny Jr. and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2019-12-20 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While international efforts in the development of short rotation woody crops (SRWCs) have historically focused on the production of biomass for bioenergy, biofuels, and bioproducts, research and deployment over the past decade has expanded to include broader objectives of achieving multiple ecosystem services. In particular, silvicultural prescriptions developed for SRWCs have been refined to include woody crop production systems for environmental benefits such as carbon sequestration, water quality and quantity, and soil health. In addition, current systems have been expanded beyond traditional fiber production to other environmental technologies that incorporate SRWCs as vital components for phytotechnologies, urban afforestation, ecological restoration, and mine reclamation. In this Special Issue of the journal Forests, we explore the broad range of current research dedicated to our topic: International Short Rotation Woody Crop Production Systems for Ecosystem Services and Phytotechnologies
