Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Bedford of the Past The following sketches were written currente ca lamo in 1875 for the New Bedford Evening Standard, with no intention of further publication. Beheving, however, that they have much of local historic value for the lover of bygone days, we have decided to publish them in book form, not only for their more sure preservation, but also to show the keen interest felt by the author in his native town. Editors. Nonqurrr, mass., Aug. 12, 1903. MY dear friends, anna and walton cmrsom I thank you for giving me an opportunity of reading some of your honored father's sketches of old New Bed ford. The names are mostly unknown to me, but I can easily see how valuable these reminiscences may be to the descendants of these Old citizens in time to come, and how pleasant to some even now. I find a certain charm in the very desultorincss of these papers, just as there is in an aimless ramble over country pastures, fields, and meadows, picking a flower here and there. Just such a ramble I had many a time with your father himself among the marshes and woods of this lovely Nonquitt. Why he chose to ask me to be his companion, I never clearly knew; but his talk was much like these papers, and I found quite as many wild flowers in it as we picked by the way, flowers Of poetical quotation or noble sentiment or genuine insight into ideal truth. The world of today is much the poorer for the passage Of so simple-hearted and nncor rupted a man as he indubitably was. She had employed him for the day, and after giving him his dinner, she was obliged to go out, so left his supper for him. He ate it immediately on her departure, and went home, declaring he never vet had worked after supper. Adelaide Goodale was another curious char acter, who sometimes wore a hat and a bonnet at the same time, the former perched on top. She had the most nasal of twangs, and kept a thread and needle store and a few sweeties on Third street. One winter the doctor advised her to take cod liver oil, but she told him that she fried her cakes in candle grease and stood over the smoke, and guessed that was just as good and a deal cheaper. Book New Bedford Massachusetts

Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Bedford, Massachusetts: Its History, Industries, Institutions and Attractions At a special meeting of the New Bedford Board of Trade, held Oct. 17, 1887, the following motion, made by Thomas W. Cook, was adopted: That a committee of three be appointed by the chair for the purpose of collating facts, figures, statistics, and general information in relation to the city of New Bedford as being a desirable and advantageous place for permanent residence, summer resort, the establishment of business, and any and all other knowledge the promulgation of which would prove beneficial to the growth, prosperity, and general welfare of the city; the same to be published in an illustrated form and distributed throughout the country, as the wisdom of the committee may determine; and that such sums of money be appropriated from time to time to defray the expenses of the committee as they, together with the Hoard of Directors, may consider necessary; and that the expenses of such action be taken from the industrial exposition surplus, if there be any surplus. In obedience to that resolution, this book has been prepared. Beyond the mere shred of historical reminiscence which forms the opening chapter, and a few incidental allusions in the succeeding pages, no attempt has been made to dwell on the past of New Bedford. The aim has been to exhibit New Bedford as it is, that her people may be incited to greater efforts to realize her possibilities. The grateful thanks of the committee, the writers, and the editor are due to the many who have cheerfully assisted in the preparation of these pages. While the task has been long and sometimes perplexing, it has brought to those to whom it was entrusted many pleasant experiences. And now the book is committed to the people of New Bedford, for whose sake it was prepared, with the hope that it may accomplish some part, at least, of the benefit which has been hoped from it. Download or read book History of New Bedford Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by Zephaniah W Pease and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of New Bedford, Vol. 2 In January, 1917, Mr. Tripp presented on behalf of the board of trustees of the Free Public Library of the city of New Bedford the sixty-fifth annual report of the board to the city council. This report Mr. Tripp submitted as clerk of the board of trustees, but the leading feature of this was the report of George H. Tripp, librarian, to the trustees of the library. This report of the growth, activities and needs of the library shows that his position is not a sinecure, but one of responsibility that is receiving the closest attention, and the report breathes a spirit of loyalty and devotion as well as a masterful grasp upon the duties of the position he so ably fills. At the opening of the new library building, December 11, 1910, Mr. Tripp delivered a most thoughtful and valuable address. He descends from the ancient Tripp family founded in Rhode Island by John Tripp, and in the town of Dartmouth by his son, Joseph Tripp. Lemuel Tripp, grandfather of George H. Tripp, was a merchant, shipowner and sea captain, and in 1831 an incorporator of the Fairhaven Bank, which in 1864 became the Fairhaven National Bank. Hiram Tripp, son of Lemuel Tripp, was a cooper by trade, a shipowner and an important man in his day. He married Louisa Gifford, daughter of Bethuel and Susan (Clark) Gifford, she also a descendant of ancient and honorable family. Hiram and Louisa (Gifford) Tripp were the parents of George H. Tripp, who as educator and principal in New Bedford public school and as librarian of the Free Public Library has been in the public service for the greater part of his mature years. George Henry Tripp was born in Fairhaven, Massachusetts, 1853. After public school and preparatory courses of study, he entered Dartmouth College, whence he was graduated, class of 1876. He chose pedagogy as his profession, and after five years teaching in various high schools was elected, in 1881, principal of the Middle Street Grammar School, New Bedford. This Middle street school house was built in 1844-45, the first brick school house in the city, the upper floor being occupied by the high school. That building, costing $10,000, was outgrown, but in new, enlarged and improved form is now an important item of the city's system of buildings devoted to free public education. Between 1845, when the school was founded, and 1881, when Mr. Tripp was elected, the school had been under the care of eleven principals, Benjamin Evans, the first principal, being recalled as its fourth. Mr. Tripp continued as principal twenty years, 1881-1901. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Life in New Bedford a Hundred Years Ago

Download or read book Life in New Bedford a Hundred Years Ago written by Zephaniah W Pease and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life in New Bedford a Hundred Years Ago: A Chronicle of the Social, Religious and Commercial History of the Period as Recorded in a Diary Kept by Joseph R. Anthony The picture most familiar to the people of New Bedford is that of "Main Street," now Union street, a lithograph reproduced from a painting by William A. Wall. It affords a glimpse of the most pretentious neighborhood in the town as it existed a little more than a century ago. Once the picture adorned about every home in the village. When the period of the chromo came the old prints were displaced and many were destroyed. Within a few years old prints have come in vogue and the old New Bedford picture is eagerly sought. The print reveals in the foreground William Rotch in a chaise, the only one in the village at the time, a vehicle said to have been imported from England. Along the street is a row of buildings, a store, a blacksmith shop, the town pound, and last in the line, the old mansion of William Rotch, surrounded by a garden, with poplar trees along the roadside. A few traditions came down of social events in that early day, such as the visit of John de Marsiellac from Languedoc, who read the petition from William Rotch to the national assembly of France in reply to which Mirabeau, the president of the French national assembly, made a beautiful apostrophe to the Quakers - "I was present," wrote William Logan Fisher in a manuscript still in existence, "when he alighted from the stage at William Rotch's door and remember the earnest kisses which he bestowed upon the cheeks of that venerable man. There was General Lincoln of Revolutionary memory who received the sword of Cornwallis and led him out as a prisoner at Yorktown. There was Count Rochambeau Liancourt, Peter Grant of Italy and many others. The meagre records and traditions familiar to those who love the fascinating history of the rare old, fair old golden time, served to excite curiosity for further knowledge of the men and women of the village period. As we have looked at the stately Dutch cap mansions, indicative of caste and distinction, there has come eager curiosity for intimate knowledge of those who laid the corner stone of the structure, their social and business life, their joys and sorrows. We have craved to participate in an adventure such as Le Sage depicted in Asmodeus' flight. In the tale, "Le Diable Borteaux," "The Devil On Two Sticks," the spirit liberated from a bottle, takes Don Cleofas along, unroofs the buildings of a great city and entertains his companion with glimpses of those within, revealing their sufferings, transports and agitations. Wash and drain it; grate a large nutmeg, as much salt and a little less of pounded cloves, mix them together and rub over the sides of the meat well. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The First Congregational Society in New Bedford, Massachusetts: Its History, as Illustrative of Ecclesiastical Evolution The germ of this thick pamphlet was a purpose to write a single dis course, of not unusual length, to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the building of the present church of the First Congregational (uni tarian) Society in New Bedford. But dates, facts, and figures pertain ing to the building of a meeting-house had for me little interest in themselves. Their only interest lay in what the meeting-house stood for when buiBefore committing anything to paper, I was satisfied that I had dis covered the right historical clue to the conditions of religious develop ment in the old township of Dartmouth; but at the time the Discourses were delivered, many details of the evidence had to be left for further investigation, and some of the statements could then only be made con jecturally. That more complete research having since been made, I have been gratified to learn that all the conclusions previously arrived at, partly by inference, have been abundantly sustained by the collective facts. The new facts have necessitated some revision and additions in the first Discourse. Much new matter has been gathered concerning the first minister, Samuel Hunt; and it has also been ascertained that there was Congregational preaching in the town, by James Gardner, before Mr. Hunt's settlement.
