Download or read book Never Recovered WWII Gold in the Himalayas written by Ken Winkler and published by Booksmango. This book was released on 2017-03-09 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Former intelligence operative and ex-Vietnam War soldier, social worker and teacher Tim Adams has spent five years in exile from both his time in Asia as well as an espionage mess that ended badly in San Francisco. When he was approached to assist a WWII veteran with "problems," he had no idea how deeply it would involve him in the wars he left behind. Set in the bucolic streets of Santa Monica, the humid back areas of Bangkok Chinatown, and in the skies over northern Burma, Adams dodges triad activists, CIA operatives and his own ghosts as he attempts to help retrieve a cargo of gold (and incriminating documents) from the "Hump," a pejorative term for the Himalayas. It is an action/adventure thriller that includes social commentaries on Southeast Asia, as well as a running battle that covers three countries and includes aerial combat.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Returning to India from China on November 3, 1944, WWII C-46 #996 calls an ominous “Mayday.” The author, himself a Hump pilot on a mission that horrendous night, recalls the violent storms. Nothing more is heard from cargo plane 996. Sixty years later, a Tibetan hunter wanders onto the crashed plane at 14,000 feet. An MIA Team based in Hawaii is dispatched to Tibet to excavate and search the crash site. Missing in the Himalayas connects the dots between the C-46’s crash in 1944 and its excavation in 2004, between a gallant aircrew in WWII and a dedicated MIA recovery team today. The book narrates the high-risk adventure in detail---an anatomy of an MIA mission. Illustrated with dramatic photographs, Missing in the Himalayas is of special interest to pilots and aviation enthusiasts, to mountaineers, and to WWII history buffs. Aficionados of the CBI theater and the Hump will find the book of particular interest.

Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered why it is that different spiritual beliefs are so similar to each other? Is it just coincidence or is there something more to it, something beyond the ordinary that must account for it? It may be that one belief system simply derives from another one. Originally there was an insight captured by a certain individual, and, then, connected by time and along certain geographical lines it spreads to other peoples. With slight variations, it continues largely as it was originally established. To be sure, this sort of thing happens. Yet, there are those cases where different sages or wise men who have little or nothing to do with each other in terms of time or geography uncannily espouse the same ideas, the same spiritual understandings. They speak with one voice, as it were. In today's times, when the philosophy of materialism is still ruling our souls, the idea that there could be a natural spiritual connection between the soul and the mystery of the beyond probably does not sit well with many. It opens up a whole can of worms-- Is there a metaphysical realm? Are we more than biochemicals? Did we not put to rest that silly notion of the soul a long time ago? For those of you committed to materialism, I ask you to open up your minds and consider the perspective of the three masters I present to you, Lao Tsu, Buddha, and Jesus. Though Lao Tsu and Buddha lived around the same time, they were clearly separated by geography. Jesus was separated from both of them by a good deal of time, and there is no solid evidence that he had any contact with their ideas. Yet, time and time again they formulate the same perspectives, the same teachings for advanced spiritual living. I found myself of necessity picturing an entire realm separate from the rigid world of matter, a realm of pure Spirit through which one can contact the mysterious, mystical Source of all Being. These three masters reached higher than most of us ever will. But does it not stand to reason that we, too, have the capacity to connect to Spirit like these three did? In our own way? To our own degree? This book, Common Hearts, Common Minds will demonstrate to you, example after example, how each man spoke the same truth, and in the process may just give you a new way of life that you will choose to follow.

Book excerpt: The true story of an unsolved lost treasure of silver and gold. In 1886, 21 years after the Civil War, a shocking and brutal crime was committed in northern Arizona just south of the Utah line by two men, one of which was a 10th Calvary retired soldier. Elderly, Samuel and Charlotte Clevenger were both murdered by an ax-wielding killer. The only witness was their adopted teenage daughter, Jessie, who was abducted by the men responsible for the slaying. In secret, before his death, Sam Clevenger buried a stash of currency, silver and gold that has never been found! The legend of the Clevenger's lost gold of 1886 is a true story that is well documented and legally substantiated. The ruthless murder of Samuel and Charlotte Clevenger was considered at one time to be one of the most brutal acts ever committed in the territory of Arizona. This true story has been pulled out of the archives, old records and newspaper clippings of the time and painstakingly re-assembled into this book, providing the most accurate detailed description of the crime, court hearings, testimonies and location of the lost treasure.

Book excerpt: From a mesmerizing storyteller, the gripping search for a missing World War II crew, their bomber plane, and their legacy. In the fall of 1944, a massive American bomber carrying eleven men vanished over the Pacific islands of Palau, leaving a trail of mysteries. According to mission reports from the Army Air Forces, the plane crashed in shallow water—but when investigators went to find it, the wreckage wasn’t there. Witnesses saw the crew parachute to safety, yet the airmen were never seen again. Some of their relatives whispered that they had returned to the United States in secret and lived in hiding. But they never explained why. For sixty years, the U.S. government, the children of the missing airmen, and a maverick team of scientists and scuba divers searched the islands for clues. With every clue they found, the mystery only deepened. Now, in a spellbinding narrative, Wil S. Hylton weaves together the true story of the missing men, their final mission, the families they left behind, and the real reason their disappearance remained shrouded in secrecy for so long. This is a story of love, loss, sacrifice, and faith—of the undying hope among the families of the missing, and the relentless determination of scientists, explorers, archaeologists, and deep-sea divers to solve one of the enduring mysteries of World War II.

Download or read book Rock N Roll Gold Rush written by Maury Dean and published by Algora Publishing. This book was released on 2003 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monster Rock-n-Roll survey focuses on the songs and the vibrant personalities who create them, for college audiences and the general public. Dean published the world's first history of Rock in 1966. Here, in his ebullient style, he buzzes through piles of musical singles from the whole last half century, describing what is fun about each major and minor hit, pointing out what elements were exciting or new or significant in the development of musical styles. He relates some tantalizing tidbits about the earlier musical heritage that artists have drawn upon in crafting ever more amazing evolutions of rock music. This snappy, witty and informative album has universal appeal, doubling as a coffee-table trivia treasure and a college-level popular music history text. It includes hundreds of photos, chapter questions, and an extensive index. Reader-friendly and informationally complete, it covers soft rock, heavy metal, rhythm & blues, country rock and classic oldies, all with tender loving care, for the specialist and casual listener alike. Its mini-portraits of the artists who move so many hearts (and feet), the photos and the insightful sound bites get to the essence of each song and each musician's contribution to the music of our age. The single-song focus makes the book unique. It's a playlist for R'n'R professors and the general public, written with a collegiate vocabulary, tight organization and a respect for all. "Hearing Elvis for the first time was like busting out of jail." - Bob Dylan That being said, no one is being incited, here, to bust out of jail or to emulate the quixotic habits of rock stars. "There's nothing in here to hide from the kids, the clergy or grandma." Gold Rush can be used as a university or community college text, but most people will grab it for the sheer pleasure of reading about everyone's favorites. Great gift for Rock enthusiasts. Gold Rush is the first book of its kind to feature a celebration of the great single songs of the rock era and beyond. Gold Rush takes thousands of songs, spanning three centuries, and brings them back uniquely as if they came out just yesterday. Gold Rush unites the Anglo-American and later worldwide spirit of Rock and Roll in a tapestry of interconnected melodies and adventures. As Leonard Maltin's Movie Guide helps you select videos at Blockbuster, so Gold Rush is a powerful playlist for your music collection, with many new and fascinating photos of favorite stars. Gold Rush explains the most important stories behind the songs you picked to be played, the songs that 'went gold,' from the 1897 Alaska/Klondike Gold Rush to the #1 songs of today and beyond.

Book Grave Misfortune The USS Indianapolis Tragedy

Download or read book Grave Misfortune The USS Indianapolis Tragedy written by Richard A. Hulver and published by Government Printing Office. This book was released on 2019-06-03 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dedicated to the Sailors and Marines who lost their lives on the final voyage of USS Indianapolis and to those who survived the torment at sea following its sinking. plus the crews that risked their lives in rescue ships. The USS Indianapolis (CA-35) was a decorated World War II warship that is primarily remembered for her worst 15 minutes. . This ship earned ten (10) battle stars for her service in World War II and was credited for shooting down nine (9) enemy planes. However, this fame was overshadowed by the first 15 minutes July 30, 1945, when she was struck by two (2) torpedoes from Japanese submarine I-58 and sent to the bottom of the Philippine Sea. The sinking of Indianapolis and the loss of 880 crew out of 1,196 --most deaths occurring in the 4-5 day wait for a rescue delayed --is a tragedy in U.S. naval history. This historical reference showcases primary source documents to tell the story of Indianapolis, the history of this tragedy from the U.S. Navy perspective. It recounts the sinking, rescue efforts, follow-up investigations, aftermath and continuing communications efforts. Included are deck logs to better understand the ship location when she sunk and testimony of survivors and participants. For additional historical publications produced by the U.S. Naval History and Heritage Command, please check out these resources here: https://bookstore.gpo.gov/agency/naval-history-heritage-command Year 2016 marked the 71st anniversary of the sinking and another spike in public attention on the loss -- including a big screen adaptation of the story, talk of future films, documentaries, and planned expeditions to locate the wreckage of the warship.

Download or read book Hitler And India written by Vaibhav Purandare and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2022-08-18 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hitler's autobiography, Mein Kampf, is a perennial bestseller in India, with even street-side bookstalls prominently displaying stacks of it. The name 'Hitler' -- anathema almost everywhere else in the world -- is tossed about casually in the Indian subcontinent, not infrequently invoked in praise. Many Indians still harbour the notion that the Fuhrer was a friend of the Indian people and had extended wholehearted support to their freedom struggle. To journalist Vaibhav Purandare, this clearly suggested that Indians continued to be largely unaware of the German dictator's views on India, in spite of the fact that they are unambiguously expressed in his own writings. This lacuna spurred him on to delve into the archives -- in Germany, India and elsewhere. The result of Purandare's research is this comprehensive and painstaking portrait and analysis of Hitler's outlook on India and its people, his opinion of their struggle against the British Raj, and his take on Indian history, culture and civilisation. Also within these pages are surprising details of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose's entanglement with the Reich, the experience of other Indians living in Nazi Germany, the mission that Hitler sent to the Himalayas in search of 'pure-blood Aryans', and a number of other little-known historical nuggets. Accessible and rich in detail, Hitler and India is the very first examination of what India meant to a figure who, perplexingly, remains quite alive in the country.

Download or read book Dick Cole s War written by Dennis R. Okerstrom and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 2015-12-31 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the 100th anniversary of his birth on September 7, 2015 Dick Cole has long stood in the powerful spotlight of fame that has followed him since his B-25 was launched from a Navy carrier and flown toward Japan just four months after the attack on Pearl Harbor. In recognition the tremendous boost Doolittle’s Raid gave American morale, members of The Tokyo Doolittle Raiders were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in May 2014. Doolittle’s Raid was only the opening act of Cole’s flying career during the war. When that mission was complete and all of the 16 aircraft had crash-landed in China, many of the survivors were assigned to combat units in Europe. Cole remained in India after their rescue and was assigned to Ferrying Command, flying the Hump of the Himalayas for a year in the world’s worst weather, with inadequate aircraft, few aids to navigation, and inaccurate maps. More than 600 aircraft with their crews were lost during this monumental effort to keep China in the war, but Cole survived and rotated home in 1943. He was home just a few months when he was recruited for the First Air Commandos and he returned to India to participate in Project 9, the aerial invasion of Burma.
