Book excerpt: One cannot know anything about what is in the natural world until one is presented with it; but how one views what is thus presented depends on one's worldview and logical sagacity. Our actions, whether past, present, or future, were, are, and will be regulated by causes and their effects as manifested in events; in fact, our personal identities are defined by the events in our lives and by our worldviews. Young people should be acquiring discriminating skills to guide their thinking and to calculate their actions on these matters early in their lives, instead of being distracted by contrived trivialities and submitting their minds to manipulation by persons who are promoting their versions of the world that serve only their own vested interests.

Book Mind Your Ps and Qs

Download or read book Mind Your Ps and Qs written by G. L. Giles and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2008-12 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been frequent debate about what "Mind Your Ps and Qs" really means. It has come to mean a lot to me over the years as minding my own Ps and Qs, not the dogma of stale thought, became what is truly important to me. So, I have come up with my own definition of "Ps and Qs" (meaning "Poetry and Quotes"). Specifically, my own poetry and quotes which I hope will empower others as they have me. In addition, I've included a short story entitled "Stripper Witch," and an article entitled "More Marketing Advice" which will hopefully benefit not only nontraditionally published authors but those traditionally published as well.

Book The Act of Thinking

  • Author : Derek Melser
  • Publisher : MIT Press
  • Release : 2004-09-03
  • ISBN : 0262263831
  • Pages : 305 pages

Download or read book The Act of Thinking written by Derek Melser and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2004-09-03 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new theory proposes that thinking is a learned action. In this remarkable monograph, Derek Melser argues that the core assumption of both folk psychology and cognitive science—that thinking goes on in the head—is mistaken. Melser argues that thinking is not an intracranial process of any kind, mental or neural, but is rather a learned action of the person. After an introduction in which he makes a prima facie case that thinking is an action, Melser reviews action-based theories of thinking advanced by Ryle, Vygotsky, Hampshire and others. He then presents his own theory of "token concerting," according to which thinking is a special kind of token performance, by the individual, of certain social, concerted activity. He examines the developmental role of concerted activity, the token performance of concerted activity, the functions of speech, the mechanics and uses of covert tokening, empathy, the origins of solo action, the actional nature of perception, and various kinds and aspects of mature thinking. In addition, he analyzes the role of metaphors in the folk notion of mind. While intending his theory as a contribution to the philosophy of mind, Melser aims also at a larger goal: to establish actions as a legitimate philosophical given, self-explanatory and sui generis. To this end, he argues in the final chapter against the possibility of scientific explanation of actions. The Act of Thinking opens up a large new area for philosophical research.

Book Counselling and Identity

Download or read book Counselling and Identity written by Alex Howard and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2004-11-17 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Questions relating to personal identity are of central importance within counselling, which is often seen as an essentially (and perhaps excessively) 'me-focussed' activity. People often come to counsellors to find, reclaim, come to terms with, or control (aspects of) 'themselves.' They want to see how they have been shaped, helped or damaged by their circumstances. Yet there has been surprisingly little systematic examination of the conceptions of 'self' that are, could be, or should be available to counsellors. This accessible book meets this need and more deeply than most other texts into the foundations and underlying presuppositions of the subject. Alex Howard takes a fresh look at counselling and psychotherapy and advocates greater philosophical and sociological awareness for trainees.

Book Seriously Norman

Download or read book Seriously Norman written by Chris Raschka and published by Scholastic Inc.. This book was released on 2013-06-25 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two-time Caldecott Medalist Chris Raschka's dazzling fiction debut. Now that the whole thing is over (and we all survived!), I can tell you what happened. Picture this for a second. Rock wall six inches on my left. Sheer cliff hundreds of feet down on my right, my best friend Norman in front of me, mumbling something, and my mom behind me saying, "Step, step, step." EEEEEEYAAAAAH! Next time my mom bugs me about sitting in front of the computer too much, I'm going to say, "Thanks, I prefer it where the near-death experiences are virtual!" No, seriously, this story is about Norman and about how he grows and learns stuff. Uses his imagination. Observes things. Like his dad, who is so devoted to . . . money! Like how his dad is mixed up with weird creeps of the underworld. All over the world! Why, why are grown-ups so insane? That's exactly the question that Norman, Anna and Emma (the twins), and I, Leonard, try to answer. And with the help of Norman's new tutor, Balthazar Birdsong (also fairly nuts), we nearly do it, too. Praise for SERIOUSLY, NORMAN! A NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW NOTABLE CHILDREN'S BOOK "Appealingly quirky and adventurous; a celebration of the power of thinking outside the box."--KIRKUS REVIEWS "This rousing tale contains strong wordplay and a lot of humor."--HORN BOOK "A visual, loopy, absurdist experience."--THE NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW

  • Author : Elaine Ford
  • Publisher : University of Michigan Press
  • Release : 2009-07-28

Download or read book The American Wife written by Elaine Ford and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2009-07-28 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Elaine Ford’s collection roams the territory between the intellect and the heart. She writes of the human condition with precision, in language that is both grave and conversational. Her characters step out of the real world onto the page, where she develops them quietly, but with compassionate fullness. This writer grips the reader with her keen knowledge of the psyche of individuals-—their motives and secrets—and also with the surprising things that happen to them.” —Laura Kasischke, judge, Michigan Literary Fiction Awards Of Elaine Ford’s novel, Missed Connections, the Washington Post wrote that it is a work “of small episodes, of precise sentences, of unusual clarity.” That same clarity proves an unsettling force in Ford’s stories, where precision of prose often belies uncertainties hidden beneath. In the title piece, an American woman in England, embroiled in a relationship doomed to fail, discovers how little she understands about her own desires and impulses. In another story, another American wife, abandoned in Greece by her archaeologist husband, struggles to solve a crime no one else believes to have been committed. Throughout her stories Ford touches on the mysteries that make up our lives. Each story in itself is a masterpiece of such detail and power as to transform the way we see the world.
