Book Never Victorious Never Defeated

Download or read book Never Victorious Never Defeated written by Taylor Caldwell and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2018-10-02 with total page 768 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York Times Bestseller: A sprawling epic of an American railroad dynasty’s “sensational intrigues and stormy struggles for power” (The New York Times Book Review). Founded in Portersville, Pennsylvania, in the latter days of Andrew Jackson’s presidency, the Interstate is a small regional railroad with vast potential. Also, it is the birthright of Aaron deWitt’s sons: ruthless yet charming Rufus and stubborn, idealistic Stephen. When Stephen wins control of the Interstate, his victory starts a series of events that will roil the deWitt family for generations. Over decades, the Interstate grows into an enterprise capable of shaping the future of the nation. Yet, both its triumphs and defeats sow the seeds of the deWitt family’s downfall. Brothers plot against brothers, sons demean fathers, wives betray husbands—all in pursuit of monumental power. Not even Cornelia, Rufus’s beautiful and cunning daughter, can ensure that the deWitt family name won’t disappear. Spanning nearly a century, Never Victorious, Never Defeated is a brilliant dramatization of the lives of America’s robber barons and further proof that Taylor Caldwell “never falters when it comes to storytelling” (Publishers Weekly).

Book Never Accept Defeat

Download or read book Never Accept Defeat written by Michael Lounsbury and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2022-05-04 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In life, we all have decisions. Growing up in a dysfunctional Brady bunch with two mothers and four dads, life was anything but simple. From my dad killing my best friend to my siblings taking advantage of my innocence and finding my mother naked numerous times surrounded by pills. All this before I was seven. At a young age, I learned how to persevere and be resilient. It was a rocky road battling crippling mental illness and having the only constant in life be change. It was lonely and demeaning. My biggest roadblocks were family. Blood does not always run thicker than water. But I adapted. I overcame. I beat the odds. I chose the road less traveled. I never accepted defeat.

Book Beaten But Not Defeated

Download or read book Beaten But Not Defeated written by Merilyn Moos and published by John Hunt Publishing. This book was released on 2014-10-31 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Siegi Moos, an anti-Nazi and active member of the German Communist Party, escaped Germany in 1933 and, exiled in Britain, sought another route to the transformation of capitalism. This biography charts Siegi’s life, starting in Germany when he witnessed the Bavarian uprisings of 1918/19 and moving to the later rise of the extreme right. We follow his progress in Berlin as a committed Communist and an active anti-Nazi in the well-organised Red Front, before much of the German Communist party (KPD) took the Nazis seriously, and his deep involvement in the Free Thinkers and in agit-prop theatre. The book also describes Siegi’s life as an exile: the loss of family, comrades, his first language and ultimately his earlier political beliefs. Against a background of the loneliness of exile, the political and the personal became indissolubly intertwined when Siegi’s wife, Lotte, had a relationship with an Irish/Soviet spy. Lastly, we look into Siegi’s time as a research worker at the prestigious Oxford Institute of Statistics at Oxford University from 1938, becoming an economic advisor under the Labour Prime Minister, Wilson, 1966-1970, and how, finally, after retirement, he returned to writing.

Book Madness Is Better Than Defeat

Download or read book Madness Is Better Than Defeat written by Ned Beauman and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2018-02-13 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1938, two rival expeditions descend on an ancient temple recently discovered in the jungles of Honduras, one intending to shoot a huge Hollywood production on location there, the other to disassemble the temple and ship it back to New York. A seemingly endless stalemate ensues. Twenty years later, a rogue CIA agent sets out to exploit the temple for his own ends, unaware that it is a locus of conspiracies far grander than anyone could ever have guessed. Shot through with intrigue, ingenuity, and adventure, and showcasing Beauman’s riotous humor, spectacular imagination, and riveting prose, Madness Is Better Than Defeat is a novel without parallel: inventive, anarchic, and delightfully insane.

Book Symbols of Defeat in the Construction of National Identity

Download or read book Symbols of Defeat in the Construction of National Identity written by Steven Mock and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-12-29 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If nationalism is the assertion of legitimacy for a nation and its effectiveness as a political entity, why do many nations emphasize images of their own defeat in understanding their history? Using Israel, Serbia, France, Greece and Ghana as examples, the author argues that this phenomenon exposes the ambivalence that lurks behind the passions nationalism evokes. Symbols of defeat glorify a nation's ancient past, while reenacting the destruction of that past as a necessary step in constructing a functioning modern society. As a result, these symbols often assume a foundational role in national mythology. Threats to such symbols are perceived as threats to the nation itself and consequently are met with desperation difficult for outsiders to understand.

Book The Defeat of a Renaissance Intellectual

Download or read book The Defeat of a Renaissance Intellectual written by Francesco Guicciardini and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2019-05-17 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A papal advisor and sixteenth-century power broker, Francesco Guicciardini wrote voluminously throughout his time in service to the Medici. The texts in this volume chart his career chronologically, revealing an intellectual whose philosophy of self-interest failed not only to perceive the interests of others but ultimately to serve his own. During Guicciardini’s life, Florentine politics was dominated by the struggle of republican leaders to retain civic political autonomy against the ambitions of the Medici family. Like Machiavelli and Petrarch, and arguably even Dante, Guicciardini was what Carlo Celli calls an “establishment intellectual,” one whose talents furthered the hegemony of authoritarian rule against the interests of his own class. The letters, treatises, reports, and orations included in this volume span Guicciardini’s long career, from his first appointment as ambassador to the Spanish court to just a few years before his forced retirement from political life. They reveal Guicciardini’s role as a protagonist in the events related in his famous History of Italy (1540), shed light on the self-recriminations and remorse that sometimes gnawed at his conscience, and explain why, ultimately, Guicciardini fell from political grace into irrelevance. Through these previously untranslated writings, The Defeat of a Renaissance Intellectual evidences the hard lessons Guicciardini learned in service to the Medici: working within a corrupt system does not lead to solutions, and reason and self-interest are not foolproof guides for predicting human behavior. This book will appeal especially to scholars who study the Medici clan, the Italian Wars, and Renaissance politics and history.

Book Imperial Japan and Defeat in the Second World War

Download or read book Imperial Japan and Defeat in the Second World War written by Peter Wetzler and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-02-20 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Informed Western understanding of Imperial Japan still often conjures up images of militarism, blind devotion to leaders, and fanatical pride in the country. But, as Imperial Japan and Defeat in the Second World War reveals, Western imagination is often reductive in its explanation of the Japanese Empire and its collapse. In his analysis of the Emperor, Imperial Japanese Army and Navy during the Second World War, Peter Wetzler examines the disconnect between nation and state during wartime Japan and in doing so offers a much-needed nuanced and sensitive corrective to existing Western scholarship. Rooted in the perspective of the Japanese, Wetzler makes available to readers vital primary and secondary Japanese archival sources; most notably, this book provides the first English assessment of the recently-released Actual Record of the Showa Emperor. This book is an important advance in English-language studies of the Second World War in Asia, and is thus essential reading for all those wishing to understand this crucial period in Japanese history.
