New techniques for the use of low-yield and multiple-group neutron source reactions, which were developed to perform these measurements, are shown, along with additional data obtained for the neutron source reactions Be-9 (alpha, n)C-12 and N-15 (d, n)O-16. In addition to the N-14(n, d sub O)C-13 reaction measurements, the C-13 (d, n)N-14 reaction was investigated to provide additional deuteron stripping data for evaluating the spins and parities of the lowlying states of N-14, and to provide additional information on the reaction mechanism for deuteron induced reactions. Measurements and results are given for the differential elastic, total, and nonelastic neutron cross sections for nitrogen and oxygen at several neutron energies. (Author).

Book excerpt: Absolute differential cross sections for the elastic scattering of neutrons in the angular range from 2.5 degrees to 16 degrees have been determined for nitrogen at neutron energies of 7.65, 7.88, 8.11, 10.95, and 14.00 MeV and for oxygen at neutron energies of 10.25, 10.75, 10.95, 11.25 and 14.10 MeV. The measured cross sections are in good agreement with the most recent evaluations by Young and Foster except for oxygen around 11 MeV where the measured differential cross sections are significantly lower than the evaluated ones.

A revision of some of the neutron cross sections for Al, Si, Na, and O given in NDA 2111-3, Vol. C, Nov. 1, 1959 and NDA 2133-4, Jan. 31, 1961 was made based on experimental results which appeared in the literature since the publication of these reports. In addition, some typographical errors in the tabulation (n, n) cross sections for Mn in NDA 2133-4 are corrected. The results of Hauser-Feshbach calculations of reactions of O-16 are reported. Book excerpt: Absolute differential cross sections for the elastic scattering of 7.40, 7.55, 8.00, 8.55, 9.00, and 9.50 MeV neutrons from carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen in the angular range from 2.5 degrees to 15 degrees have been determined. Measurements were made relative to the scattering from lead by use of a special-purpose collimator. The cross section scale was then established by absolute measurements for lead in a ring geometry experiment. The results for nitrogen are consistent with recent measurements at other laboratories which suggest that the discrepancy in previous nitrogen cross section data around 7-8 MeV neutron energy arose from an underestimate of the elastic scattering cross section. The data presented in this report represent the first direct measurements of neutron scattering cross sections for light elements at very small scattering angles. (Author).

Book excerpt: As part of the Hiroshima-Nagasaki Dose Reevaluation Program, new evaluations of the neutron cross sections for 14N and 16O were made for ENDF/B-VI, based at low energies on multichannel R-matrix analyses of reactions in the 15N and 17O systems. The types of data used in the analysis, and the resulting cross sections and resonance structures are briefly described. The resonance structure in the neutron cross sections was especially well determined by including precise, high-resolution neutron total cross section measurements from Oak Ridge and Karlsruhe. The new evaluated cross sections, wile thought to be significantly better than the earlier ones, improve, but do not completely remove, the dose discrepancies that persist, especially in the Hiroshima explosion.
