Book Magnesium in the Central Nervous System

Download or read book Magnesium in the Central Nervous System written by Robert Vink and published by University of Adelaide Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The brain is the most complex organ in our body. Indeed, it is perhaps the most complex structure we have ever encountered in nature. Both structurally and functionally, there are many peculiarities that differentiate the brain from all other organs. The brain is our connection to the world around us and by governing nervous system and higher function, any disturbance induces severe neurological and psychiatric disorders that can have a devastating effect on quality of life. Our understanding of the physiology and biochemistry of the brain has improved dramatically in the last two decades. In particular, the critical role of cations, including magnesium, has become evident, even if incompletely understood at a mechanistic level. The exact role and regulation of magnesium, in particular, remains elusive, largely because intracellular levels are so difficult to routinely quantify. Nonetheless, the importance of magnesium to normal central nervous system activity is self-evident given the complicated homeostatic mechanisms that maintain the concentration of this cation within strict limits essential for normal physiology and metabolism. There is also considerable accumulating evidence to suggest alterations to some brain functions in both normal and pathological conditions may be linked to alterations in local magnesium concentration. This book, containing chapters written by some of the foremost experts in the field of magnesium research, brings together the latest in experimental and clinical magnesium research as it relates to the central nervous system. It offers a complete and updated view of magnesiums involvement in central nervous system function and in so doing, brings together two main pillars of contemporary neuroscience research, namely providing an explanation for the molecular mechanisms involved in brain function, and emphasizing the connections between the molecular changes and behavior. It is the untiring efforts of those magnesium researchers who have dedicated their lives to unraveling the mysteries of magnesiums role in biological systems that has inspired the collation of this volume of work.

Book excerpt: Common mental illnesses have been diagnosed separately in recent years, but what is seldom understood is that they are all linked together, often much more closely than other disorders. In particular, combined anxiety and depression linked to personality disturbance, generally known as neuroticism, is very common. In the absence of awareness of its importance, this frequently leads to wrong clinical decisions and poor outcomes for patients. This book focuses on the concept of neurosis, tracing its history as a concept, its abolition from the DSM, the purpose and importance of the Nottingham Study of Neurotic Disorder, the re-definition of neurosis as the general neurotic syndrome, and its recently updated evidence base. Written for psychiatrists, psychologists and researchers, this book shows how recognising these combined common disorders is absolutely necessary for mental health practice, and urges that it is time that we re-examine our treatment priorities.

Book Neurotic Disorders in the Elderly

Download or read book Neurotic Disorders in the Elderly written by James Lindesay and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1995 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current psychiatric research is domintaed by taxonomies that emphasise the discontinuities and differences betweeen diseases rather than continuities and similarities. In thisd environment it may see rather 'heretical' to use words like 'Neurposis' in a professional psychiatric context. However, the authors of this booo posit the view that much more can be learned from taking a broad, dimentional view of neurotic disorders in elderly people rather than by adopting the narrow, categorical approach of, for example, the DSM classifications. To this end the book is organized by areasof interest: epidemiology; clinical assessment an diagnosis; the clinical relationship with physical ill-health; psychosocial factors, psychological treatment, both behavioural and dynamic; and physical treatments. In addition, there are chapters on personality, alcohol and drug abuse, eatingdisorders, sex, and sleep in the elderly. Disturbances and disorders in these areas frequently aggravate and complicate neurotic disorders in old age, and it is important that they are considered in this context. This book will help any psychiatrist improve their skills in this area and improve the quality of care they provide their elderly patients.

Book A Poetics of Neurosis

Download or read book A Poetics of Neurosis written by Elena Furlanetto and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2018-11-30 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While psychiatry and the neurosciences have dismissed the concept of neurosis as too vague for medical purposes, in recent years literary studies have adopted the term by virtue of its abstractness. This volume investigates the verbalization of neurosis in literary and cultural texts. As opposed to the medical diagnostics of neurosis in the individual, the contributions focus on the poetics of neurosis. They indicate how neuroses are still routinely romanticized or vilified, bent to suit aesthetic and narrative choices, and transfigured to illustrate unresolved cultural tensions.

Download or read book Theories of Neurosis written by M. Gossop and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In view of the practical importance of neurotic disorders (with something like one-third of the population suffering such dis turbances at some time of their lives) and the equally great theoretical importance of types of behaviour that clearly seem to contradict both common sense and the law of effect, one might have expected that psychologists would develop consis tent and testable theories of neurosis and that there would be many textbooks outlining these theories and describing the experiments done to test them. Oddly enough nothing of the kind seems to have happened. There is a dearth of theories of neurosis; those that do exist are not usually put in a readily testable form, and the amount of research that has been done in order to test these theories is nothing like as large as one might have hoped. Nor are there many books setting out the various theories, the arguments for and against and the empiri cal evidence; in fact, this may be the only book to have under taken this task in the past 20 or 30 years. It is fortunate that the author has succeeded in what is an extremely difficult and complex task. He has examined issues and theories dispassionately and impartially, has clarified the contradictions inherent in most theories and has wisely refused to come to any kind of final judgment about the adequacy of the given theories.

Download or read book Neuroticism written by Shannon Sauer-Zavala and published by Guilford Publications. This book was released on 2021-07-19 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neuroticism--the tendency to experience negative emotions, along with the perception that the world is filled with stressful, unmanageable challenges--is strongly associated with anxiety, depression, and other common mental health conditions. This state-of-the-art work shows how targeting this trait in psychotherapy can benefit a broad range of clients and reduce the need for disorder-specific interventions. The authors describe and illustrate evidence-based therapies that address neuroticism directly, including their own Unified Protocol for transdiagnostic treatment. They examine how neuroticism develops and is maintained, its relation to psychopathology, and implications for how psychological disorders are classified and diagnosed.

  • ISBN : 1910924660

Download or read book The Neurotic Turn written by Charles Johns and published by Watkins Media Limited. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking their cue from the work of Charles Johns, who has argued that, far from being an ailment, neurosis is in fact the dominant condition of our society today, an array of thinkers have gathered in The Neurotic Turn to address the question: what can ‘neurosis’ tell us about our current social impasse? What emerges in The Neurotic Turn is the awareness that the medicalization of neurosis was merely provisional. Today, to understand our increasingly synthetic, digitized world, we cannot retreat from neurosis, or pretend to offer its cure. Instead, we must confront it — dispensing with the conventional idea of ‘reality’ in order to redefine it.

Book The Causes and Cures of Neurosis Psychology Revivals

Download or read book The Causes and Cures of Neurosis Psychology Revivals written by H. J. Eysenck and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-26 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1965 this book was an introduction to post-Freudian methods of diagnosing and treating neurotics of the time. These methods were known collectively as ‘behaviour therapy’, a term indicating their derivation from modern behaviourism, learning theory, and conditioning principles. In the early twentieth century John B. Watson pointed out that ‘psychology, as the behaviourist views it, is a purely objective experimental branch of natural science. Its theoretical goal is the prediction and control of behaviour.’ Behaviour therapy attempts to extend this control to the field of neurotic disorders, and in doing so it makes use of experimental laboratory findings, and of theories based on these. It was seen as the very opposite of the position taken by psychoanalysis. The authors believed that, by the late twentieth century, behaviour therapy would be ‘firmly established as one of the most important, if not the most important, weapon in the hands of psychiatrists and clinical psychologists’.

Book Classification of Neurosis

Download or read book Classification of Neurosis written by Peter Tyrer and published by . This book was released on 1989-12-14 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The classification of diseases and mental disorders has seen major reforms in the past decade; one of the main subjects of reform has been neurosis—including substantial renaming and reformulation. From the perspective primarily of the clinician, this book discusses these changes and their significance. The concepts behind the DSM and ICD classifications are described and compared, and the reasons for reformulation are given. Case histories highlight the use of the classifications in practice and are followed by a 4-way critique of the diagnosis: clarity of description; the amount of overlap with other disorders; stability, as measured through studies of outcome; and treatment implications. The shortcomings of the classifications are examined as well, and suggestions are made as to how to overcome them.
