Book excerpt: This comprehensive volume is a contribution to a new se ries initiated by the NATO Panel on "Gell to Gell Signals in Plants and Animals". The book reflects the outcome of an NATO work shop and bri ngs to mi nd two im portant questions: consideri ng the mass of relevant I iteratu reavai- able, is there any necessity for a new series of books - and considering the flood of compa rable meetings - is there any point in workshops of this nature and their publication? In order to deal with such questions adequately, much more space would be needed than is available in a foreword. Thus, the answers must remain rather superficial and, of course, rather subjective. To simplify the issue, the question of publication can be narrowed down to two fac tors - the financial risk, undertaken by the publisher, and the scientific risk, borne by the editor. If the book is good (with respect to lay-out and content) it will be a success - nothing will be lost the people involved will enhance their reputation! We are left with the question of the usefulness of workshops. Without doubt, it is indeed a useful procedure for experts to come together, in an atmosphere of harmony, and freedom from external pressures and time limitations, to discuss a well-defined theme. Wether in agreement or disagreement, a fair and open forum can be expectet for a variety of contributions.

Download or read book Sialic Acids and Sialoglycoconjugates in the Biology of Life Health and Disease written by Shyamasree Ghosh and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2020-01-08 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sialic Acids and Sialoglycoconjugates in the Biology of Life, Health and Disease enables the reader to understand the role of sialylation as a post translational modification. The book provides insights on the latest knowledge in the field of sialoglycobiology. Sialic acids as terminal residues of oligosaccharide chains play crucial roles in several cellular recognition events. Synthesized post translationally, they play an important role in recognition, signaling, immunological response and cell-cell interaction. Improper sialylations have been associated with several diseases including cancer. In the post genomics and proteomics era, sialoglybiology has become more and more important in deciphering health and disease conditions. - Discusses the sialic acids and their role in different diseases (other than cancer) - Provides an understanding of sialylations as post translational modifications (PTM) - Demonstrates the impact sialylation has on infectious diseases, the autoimmune system and health - Gives insights on the importance of sialic acid biology through animal models

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several neurological manifestations of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 viral infection (SARS-CoV-2) or Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) have previously been identified. This is the first comprehensive book to provide a detailed account of the neurological manifestations of COVID-19. The book provides up-to-date data and guidance for healthcare providers involved in the management of neurological aspects of SARS-CoV-2 infection in order to meet the new challenges related to COVID-19. The book makes reference to previously published stroke guidelines, World Health Organization (WHO) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations, relevant non-neurological-related professional guidelines, personal files, and expert opinions. The book summarizes existing evidence, indicates gaps in our current knowledge, and, when appropriate, formulates practical implications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Cellular Neurobiology, Volume 1 discusses the topographical anatomy and functional relation of the brain and spinal cord. This book is divided into three main sections—cell differentiation and interaction, aging and pathology, and methodologies. The topics discussed include specializations of non-neuronal cell membranes in the vertebrate nervous system; effects of neurohormones on glial cells; cerebellar granule cells in normal and neurological mutants of mice; and age-related changes in neuronal and glial enzyme activities. The glial fibrillary acidic (GFA) protein in normal neural cells and in pathological conditions; in vitro behavior of isolated oligodendrocytes; and biochemical mapping of specific neuronal pathways are also deliberated in this text. This publication is intended for neurologists, but is also beneficial to students researching on the central nervous system.

Download or read book Molecular Neurobiology of the Olfactory System written by F.L. Margolis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sense of smell and the olfactory system have been a subject of intrinsic interest for millenia. Inquiry into the structure and function of the olfactory system is based on a long tradition that dates back at least to the ancient Greeks. The mechanistic basis for the sensitivity and selectivity of this chemosensory detection system has always posed a challenge and remained largely a mystery. Recently, there has been a renaissance of interest in it and especially in the application of contemporary techniques of biochemistry and cellular and molecular biology. In this volume, current research utilizing these ap proaches is discussed in depth by a group of scientists who are among the current leaders in the applications of these techniques to the olfactory system. These authors address a wide range of questions that bear directly on the olfactory system but have broader biological implications as well. The various chapters have been grouped into five broad subject areas that emphasize diverse but related questions. "Transduction and Ligand-Receptor Interactions" considers the biochemical bases of stimulus access, interaction, transduction, elimination, and information processing.
