Book Standards and Mastery Learning

Download or read book Standards and Mastery Learning written by J. Ronald Gentile and published by Corwin Press. This book was released on 2003-01-06 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I am quite enthusiastic about this book. As far as I know, no one has brought the perspective of mastery learning to the considerable dialogue about standards even though the connection is an obvious one. These authors clearly know mastery learning and will add greatly to the standards movement." Robert Marzano, Adjunct Associate Professor Cardinal Stritch University, Milwaukee, WI "The book makes a distinct contribution to the field. The integration of standards and mastery learning is important if standards, once established, are to be achieved by large numbers of students. I think it is timely, well organized, contains real-life examples, and is well written." Lorin Anderson, Carolina Distinguished Professor of Education University of South Carolina, Columbia, SC "This is one of the best books I have read on this topic. I can′t wait for it to be published so that I can give copies to each of the teachers at my school." RoseAnne Vojtek, Principal Ivy Drive Elementary School, Bristol, CT How to really mean it when we say, "all children can learn!" The adage that practice, or rather the right kind of practice, makes perfect is quite apparent in this new definitive book by J. Ronald Gentile and James P. Lalley, describing the concept of mastery learning in the classroom. Educators can instruct all students, regardless of their individual scholastic aptitudes, using the principles and philosophies of mastery learning. The key to this process is reinforcing and expanding initial learning through additional practice and higher-level exercises, enabling all students to reach high standards. Other key elements of this practical resource include: Usable ideas for educators and administrators on how to implement mastery learning in math, science, social studies, language arts, and other subject areas How to achieve mastery learning from a theoretical perspective How to assess effectiveness in achieving high standards Research evidence, details, features, and examples of good programs and lessons The cure for a student′s helplessness is competence, which increases both the feeling of self-efficacy, and the ability to achieve new learnings. Standards and Mastery Learning is the ideal book to enable educators to help students attain these goals. It examines national and state standards and shows how to attain them through mastery learning.

Book Mastering AI

Download or read book Mastering AI written by Jeremy Kahn and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2024-07-09 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Fortune magazine journalist draws on his expertise and extensive contacts among the companies and scientists at the forefront of artificial intelligence to offer dramatic predictions of AI’s impact over the next decade, from reshaping our economy and the way we work, learn, and create to unknitting our social fabric, jeopardizing our democracy, and fundamentally altering the way we think. Within the next five years, Jeremy Kahn predicts, AI will disrupt almost every industry and enterprise, with vastly increased efficiency and productivity. It will restructure the workforce, making AI copilots a must for every knowledge worker. It will revamp education, meaning children around the world can have personal, portable tutors. It will revolutionize health care, making individualized, targeted pharmaceuticals more affordable. It will compel us to reimagine how we make art, compose music, and write and publish books. The potential of generative AI to extend our skills, talents, and creativity as humans is undeniably exciting and promising. But while this new technology has a bright future, it also casts a dark and fearful shadow. AI will provoke pervasive, disruptive, potentially devastating knock-on effects. Leveraging his unrivaled access to the leaders, scientists, futurists, and others who are making AI a reality, Kahn will argue that if not carefully designed and vigilantly regulated AI will deepen income inequality, depressing wages while imposing winner-take-all markets across much of the economy. AI risks undermining democracy, as truth is overtaken by misinformation, racial bias, and harmful stereotypes. Continuing a process begun by the internet, AI will rewire our brains, likely inhibiting our ability to think critically, to remember, and even to get along with one another—unless we all take decisive action to prevent this from happening. Much as Michael Lewis’s classic The New New Thing offered a prescient, insightful, and eminently readable account of life inside the dot-com bubble, Mastering AI delivers much-needed guidance for anyone eager to understand the AI boom—and what comes next.

Book The Eye of the Master

Download or read book The Eye of the Master written by Matteo Pasquinelli and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2023-10-10 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A social history of AI that finally reveals its roots in the spatial computation of industrial factories and the surveillance of collective behaviour. What is AI? A dominant view describes it as the quest "to solve intelligence," a solution supposedly to be found in the secret logic of the mind or in the deep physiology of the brain, such as in its complex neural networks. The Eye of the Master argues, to the contrary, that the inner code of AI is shaped not by the imitation of biological intelligence, but the intelligence of labour and social relations, as it is found in Babbage's "calculating engines" of the industrial age as well as in the recent algorithms for image recognition and surveillance. The idea that AI may one day become autonomous (or "sentient", as someone thought of Google's LaMDA) is pure fantasy. Computer algorithms have always imitated the form of social relations and the organisation of labour in their own inner structure and their purpose remains blind automation. The Eye of the Master urges a new literacy on AI for scientists, journalists and new generations of activists, who should recognise that the "mystery" of AI is just the automation of labour at the highest degree, not intelligence per se.

Download or read book Facing Reality written by J. C. Eccles and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The titling of this book - "Facing Reality" - came to me unbidden, presumably from my subconscious! But, when it came, it seemed to be right, because that essentially is what I am trying to do in this book. " Facing" is to be understood in the sense of "looking at in a steadfast and unflinching manner". It thus contrasts with "Confronting" which has the sense of "looking at with hostility and defiance". As I face life with its joys and its sorrows, its successes and its failures, its peace and its turmoil, my attitude is one of serene acceptance and gratitude and not one of angry and arrogant confrontation and rejection. The other component of the title - "Reality" - is the ultimate reality for each of us as conscious beings - our birth - our self-hood in its long stream of becoming throughout our life - our death and apparent annihilation. This is the Reality that we each of us must face if we are to live and adventure as free and responsible beings and not as mere playthings of chance and circumstance, going through a mean ingless farce from birth to death with the search ever for distraction and self-forgetfulness. As a brain scientist I have specialist knowledge of that wonderful part of the body that is alone concerned in the whole Iife-Iong interplay between the conscious self and the extern al world, including other selves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive guide to the conceptual, mathematical, and implementational aspects of analyzing electrical brain signals, including data from MEG, EEG, and LFP recordings. This book offers a comprehensive guide to the theory and practice of analyzing electrical brain signals. It explains the conceptual, mathematical, and implementational (via Matlab programming) aspects of time-, time-frequency- and synchronization-based analyses of magnetoencephalography (MEG), electroencephalography (EEG), and local field potential (LFP) recordings from humans and nonhuman animals. It is the only book on the topic that covers both the theoretical background and the implementation in language that can be understood by readers without extensive formal training in mathematics, including cognitive scientists, neuroscientists, and psychologists. Readers who go through the book chapter by chapter and implement the examples in Matlab will develop an understanding of why and how analyses are performed, how to interpret results, what the methodological issues are, and how to perform single-subject-level and group-level analyses. Researchers who are familiar with using automated programs to perform advanced analyses will learn what happens when they click the “analyze now” button. The book provides sample data and downloadable Matlab code. Each of the 38 chapters covers one analysis topic, and these topics progress from simple to advanced. Most chapters conclude with exercises that further develop the material covered in the chapter. Many of the methods presented (including convolution, the Fourier transform, and Euler's formula) are fundamental and form the groundwork for other advanced data analysis methods. Readers who master the methods in the book will be well prepared to learn other approaches.
