Book Schaltstelle

  • Author : Karen J. Leeder

Download or read book Schaltstelle written by Karen J. Leeder and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2007 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Schaltstelle presents a pioneering examination of contemporary German poetry at the turn of the twenty-first century. Internationally recognised experts from Germany, UK, USA, Canada, Italy and the Netherlands offer a first assessment of the paths that German poetry has taken into the new millennium. Alongside in-depth analyses of established names are broader surveys of poetry of the body, the use of cliché, theories of metaphor, the topos of childhood, the 'new simplicity', and contributions dedicated to the youngest generation of poets making their debut in the new century. The volume also contains an interview with Heinz Czechowski, a substantial Bibliography and new poems by eight leading poets. Poetry is too often marginalised in discussions about literature in the Berlin Republic: this volume demonstrates that it has a vital role to play at their heart.

Book Hans Hollein and Postmodernism

Download or read book Hans Hollein and Postmodernism written by Eva Branscome and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set within the broader context of post-war Austria and the re-education initiatives set up by the Allied forces, particularly the US, this book investigates the art and architecture scene in Vienna to ask how this can inform our broader understanding of architectural Postmodernism. The book focuses on the outputs of the Austrian artist and architect, Hans Hollein, and on his appropriation as a Postmodernist figure. In Vienna, the circles of radical art and architecture were not distinct, and Hollein’s claim that ‘Everything is Architecture’ was symptomatic of this intermixing of creative practices. Austria's proximity to the so-called ‘Iron Curtain’ and its post-war history of four-power occupation gave a heightened sense of menace that emerged strongly in Viennese art in the Cold War era. Seen as a collective entity, Hans Hollein’s works across architecture, art, writing, exhibition design and publishing clearly require a more diverse, complex and culturally nuanced account of architectural Postmodernism than that offered by critics at the time. Across the five chapters, Hollein's outputs are viewed not as individual projects, but as symptomatic of Austria's attempts to come to terms with its Nazi past and to establish a post-war identity.

Book Bothe Richter Teherani

Download or read book Bothe Richter Teherani written by Klaus-Dieter Weiss and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2005-11-25 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Impressive in size, emotional and visual impact, the buildings of Hamburg-based architects Bothe Richter Teherani are also remarkable for their attention to finishing detail, functionality and financial accountability, and have won international recognition. BRT s style is provocative and controversial; it took the city of Cologne 10 years to come to terms with their glass crane structures, predestined to become the heart of the Rhine and Ruhr valleys, and BRT s project to build Europe s highest building in the waters of Hamburg harbour is the subject of heated discussion. BRT s labyrinthine yet systematic concepts to maximize space in office buildings, the futuristic connotations of space shuttles and zeppelins, and their treatment of urban and public spaces are documented in this volume. The accompanying essays and text contributions investigate the aims of the architects, somewhere between pragmatism and vision, between fine detail and the greater complexity of urban life.

Book Neue Holzarchitektur in Skandinavien

Download or read book Neue Holzarchitektur in Skandinavien written by Christoph Affentranger and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wood architecture is gaining importance worldwide. The aesthetic, technical and ecological advantages of this regenerative building material are obvious. This monograph is the first to present a definitive documentation of the important examples in wood architecture in Denmark, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, and Finland. The book offers a detailed analysis of 19 buildings, with photographs, drawings and technical details, and briefly introduces 71 further buildings. The selection is based not only on aesthetic and architectural criteria, but also on the merit of innovative solutions to technical problems. All manner of buildings are represented here: from single family homes to churches, from industrial buildings to libraries, from temporary-experimental architecture to large halls. Historical exponents illustrate the importance of a centuries old tradition in Scandinavia (modular construction, framed church buildings, etc.) and analyse their inspirational role for today's architects. This monograph offers an extensive and exciting image, and a few surprises, of contemporary wood architecture in Northern Europe. An indispensible book (including a commentated bibliography, as well as indices of names and locations) for specialists and non-specialists interested in wood architecture.

Book Local Global Narratives

Download or read book Local Global Narratives written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-08-09 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past decade and a half, Germany has experienced a period of political and cultural turbulence which many have attributed to the combined challenges of unification and globalisation. In response to growing exposure to global markets, politics and migration debates about identity have increasingly been renationalised. At the same time, there has been a notable reappraisal in Germany (and in German Studies) of the regional and global as spaces for the construction of identity. This volume sets out to explore these complex and at times contradictory trends, focusing in particular on developments in Germany since the 1970s, although chapters treating earlier periods are also included. The volume brings together British, Irish, German, Canadian and American scholars working in the field, and resulted from a conference organised by Women in German Studies at the University of Bath. The first section is primarily concerned with the specifically German concept of locality known as Heimat and its changing relationship with the global. Included are explorations of the writings of Kafka, Bachmann, Johnson, Sell, Wolf, Brinkmann and Jelinek amongst others as well as films by Schlöndorff and Steyerl. The second section focuses on the impact of the global on institutions and rituals such as commemoration, memorialisation, and architecture, which have traditionally been influential in shaping national self-images. Overall, this volume concludes that the nature of the relationship to the local has fundamentally changed under the impact of globalisation.

Book A History of Collective Living

Download or read book A History of Collective Living written by Susanne Schmid and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2019-10-21 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book tells the story of communal living from about 1850 until today. Three motives of sharing - the economic, political and social intention - divide the residential objects, which are investigated in a historical analysis and allocated to nine development phases. The author investigates and compares different forms of housing and the way they developed from their origins until today; she illustrates how everyday shared living and the degrees of privacy in housing are practiced in Europe. Owing to its comprehensive documentation, the analysis of typologies, layout plans, and user and expert interviews, the book can also be considered to be a lexicon or handbook on communal living. A detailed overview that is unique in this form.

Book Modern Architecture

Download or read book Modern Architecture written by Otto Wagner and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 1988 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1896, Otto Wagner's "Modern Architecture" shocked the European architectural community with its impassioned plea for an end to eclecticism and for a "modern" style suited to contemporary needs and ideals, utilizing the nascent constructional technologies and materials. Through the combined forces of his polemical, pedagogical, and professional efforts, this determined, newly appointed professor at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts emerged in the late 1890s - along with such contemporaries as Charles Rennie Mackintosh in Glasgow and Louis Sullivan in Chicago - as one of the leaders of the revolution soon to be identified as the "Modern Movement." Wagner's historic manifesto is now presented in a new English translation - the first in almost ninety years - based on the expanded 1902 text and noting emendations made to the 1896, 1898, and 1914 editions. In his introduction, Dr. Harry Mallgrave examines Wagner's tract against the backdrop of nineteenth-century theory, critically exploring the affinities of Wagner's revolutionary élan with the German eclectic debate of the 1840s, the materialistic tendencies of the 1870s and 1880s, and the emerging cultural ideology of modernity. Modern Architecture is one of those rare works in the literature of architecture that not only proclaimed the dawning of a new era, but also perspicaciously and cogently shaped the issues and the course of its development; it defined less the personal aspirations of one individual and more the collective hopes and dreams of a generation facing the sanguine promise of a new century
