European Digital Shipping companies could play a key role in this process, since they are increasingly being able to apply Blockchain and other new technology standards in order to identify business opportunities and to plan new logistics channels, becoming a strategic link between European and North American industries and new regions in developing countries to where they could expand, accelerating the formation of more consumer markets, integrating regional clusters into global production networks.

From the late nineteenth to the early twentieth century, sojourners from other provinces dominated the population of Shanghai and other expanding commercial Chinese cities. These immigrants formed native place associations beginning in the imperial period and persisting into the mid-twentieth century. Goodman examines the modernization of these associations and argues that under weak urban government, native place sentiment and organization flourished and had a profound effect on city life, social order and urban and national identity.

Book excerpt: The Global Soil Laboratory Network (GLOSOLAN) was formally established under the framework of the Global Soil Partnership (GSP) in November 2017, when its first meeting took place at FAO Headquarters in Rome, Italy. GLOSOLAN’s objectives are: (1) to strengthen the performance of laboratories through use of standardized methods and protocols, and (2) to harmonize soil analysis methods so that soil information is comparable and interpretable across laboratories, countries and regions. In this context, GLOSOLAN plans to develop open access Standard Operating Procedures and manuals on good laboratory practices, execute regional and global proficiency testing, and increase the overall performance of laboratories through the organization of training sessions. By April 2019, over 220 laboratories from all continents were registered in GLOSOLAN. The South-East Asian Laboratory Network (SEALNET) which corresponds to the Regional Soil Laboratory Networks for the South-East Asian region decided to conduct an independent assessment of the technical performance of SEALNET laboratories through an inter-laboratory comparison. This report presents the results of the analysis using different figures to help laboratory managers and other non-specialist readers to perceive the different aspects of (i) the laboratory performance evaluation, (ii) the way to identify the technical problems in case of poor performances and (iii) suggesting which solutions can be proposed to improve the analytical performances

The book focuses on various temporary systems in industrial agglomerations such as joint R&D, trade fairs, business workshops, and international conferences. Following the introduction, Chapter 2 considers the mechanism of the innovation process in which networks function as institutions. Chapter 3 and succeeding chapters conduct empirical research centered on statistical data analysis such as social network analysis and covariance structure analysis, and they determine the real-world situations through interview surveys of related stakeholders. Chapter 3 considers the structure and spatial patterns of R&D networks in Japan by making the structure visible and calculating network indices. Chapter 4 concentrates on local trade fairs held in industrial agglomerations and examines the development of various relationships between related participants. Chapters 5 and 6 shed light on institutional thickness in industrial agglomerations. Chapter 7 spotlights quantitative and metrical examinations of inter-organizational relationships in terms of knowledge flows based on company-level data regarding technological alliances and ownership relationships between global corporations. The studies featured in Chapters 6 and 7 serve to evaluate how Japan’s firms have adapted to radical changes under global competition.

Recent work has shown that universal generalisations concerning the impact of networking on the performance of industrial clusters lack credibility, highlighting the consequent need to compare the role played by business networks in a variety of regions. Using a copious range of research material examining several British regions, this volume poses a series of fundamental questions about the nature of industrial clusters and networks. Particular attention is paid to identifying the basic characteristics of a network, outlining how they evolved in key industrial clusters, and assessing their impact on industrial performance, both regionally and nationally. The durability of such networks is another key thread that runs through the essays, prompting comparison with industrial clusters in Britain and abroad. These are issues which stimulate discussion on a wide range of factors within the disciplines of business, economic and social history.

It supports the movement of essential goods into rural areas, such as inputs to agricultural production, as well as the movement of goods out of rural areas, such as food and forestry products heading for urban markets. Improving rural connectivity is a concern not only of local level government, but also those agencies responsible for national, state and other transport network levels. In view of ESCAPs historical involvement in regional transport agreements, the Ministerial Conference on Transport at its third session in 2016 mandated the ESCAP secretariat to develop a policy framework to improve rural transport connectivity to these regional networks. Against this background, this publication aims to stimulate a wider discussion on what governments can do to enhance rural transport connectivity to higher level networks, and in doing so, thereby make their rural transport networks more effective conduits for socioeconomic development. The study has provided a conceptual framework for rural transport connectivity, described the concepts about the vertical connectivity, rural transport connectivity within planning and policy frameworks, the concept of hierarchy from "Growth Point" to "Rural Hub", rural infrastructure connectivity policies, institutional aspects and the concept of integrating connectivity into the investment prioritization process as well as the need for measuring and monitoring rural transport connectivity. The study has provided a few recommendations including to increase investment in rural transport connectivity, including rural transport services and transport nodes, strengthen rural road asset management, increase efforts to monitor rural transport connectivity, including the data for use of the Rural Access Index, Strengthen inter-departmental coordination, Improve coordination between international organizations, governments and other stakeholders as well as to strengthen research on the rural transport.
