Book excerpt: Wireless Heterogeneous Networking (HetNet) offers the potential to be one of the most promising approaches to meeting escalating network capacity demands cost-effectively. The main challenge facing the deployment of HetNets is provisioning backhaul connectivity for small cells and the selection is governed by availability and cost, not solely by capacity requirements. In practical deployments, the adoption of mixture of backhaul technologies is likely, creating a non-uniform capacity distribution of small cells. The challenge becomes even more demanding if the backhaul is in the form of a multi-hop network. The research therefore proposes two algorithms which ensure that users enjoy the best possible quality of experience represented in terms of connection throughput and fairness considering the issues owing to small cells backhauling. The performance of types of HetNet, the Hotspot Wireless HetNet (HWH) and Multi-hop Wireless HetNet (MWH) corresponding to direct and multi-hop backhauling of small cells is evaluated. For HWH, an algorithm - the Dynamic Backhaul Capacity Sensitive Network Selection Scheme (DyBaCS) - is developed to manage the non-uniform backhaul capacity distribution ensuring a consistently fair network bandwidth distribution whilst maintaining throughput. The performance of DyBaCS and two other commonly used network selection schemes (NSSs) is evaluated and compared. Results show that DyBaCS provides superior fairness and a user throughput performance comparable to other reported schemes. For the more complex MWH architecture, a joint Multi-hop Bandwidth Allocation (MBA) and DyBaCS algorithm is developed to manage network performance. The performance of the algorithm is compared to results obtained using the Cuckoo Search optimisation algorithm and the Fair Share bandwidth allocation scheme. Results show that the algorithm is resilient in improving cell throughput whilst maintaining high levels of fairness.

Book excerpt: Wireless networks provide flexible and ubiquitous access to the telephone networks or the Internet. Multiple technologies have been developed to provide wireless access including cellular/3G/LTE, WiFi, and WiMAX. The cellular network is the most popular network, which provides the stable and constant service under most types of mobility. Its future version, LTE Advanced, is the most advanced wireless access technology, and supports the current or future bandwidth-sensitive and/or delay-sensitive applications, such as Voice over IP and real-time video streaming. The WiFi network has been aggressively deployed in many areas and provide access to laptops, PDAs and smartphones. These are referred to as WiFi hotspots. The basic WiFi infrastructure usually offers flexible and easy to deploy wireless access inside a small area at a low cost. The WiMAX network has its own advantages to provide higher transmission speed for a point-to-point communication over longer transmission distances. In many areas, these wireless networks co-exist, overlap and interlace with one another to create a heterogeneous wireless network. Instead of functioning independently, significant benefits can be accrued through cooperation and coordination among these networks by leveraging their unique advantages. This is possible as user devices come with multiple network interfaces to connect to each of these networks. In order to exploit the advantages of these heterogeneous networks, it is important to implement an efficient resource allocation algorithm to coordinate the resources of multiple wireless networks and also have a good design of the heterogeneous network. The dissertation makes contributions in both the above areas. In current WiFi networks, the overall spectrum is divided among multiple overlapping channels. The adjacent access points need to operate on orthogonal channels to avoid the interference. In Chapter II, we give a precise analysis of the interference among different channels and discuss the potential possibility of utilizing partially overlapping channels in the multi-hop mesh networks. It is possible to optimize different network performance metric, such as throughput, by balancing parallel transmissions and partially received transmission power offers the best system performance, such as throughput. In the multi-hop mesh networks, some mesh nodes are highly congested either due to the interferences from multiple neighbors, or when they are located at the intersection of multiple routing paths. These highly congested mesh nodes significantly degrade the network performance, since the throughput of a path is limited by the node with minimum capacity. In Chapter III, we discuss the efficient cooperation between a WiFi-based mesh network and a WiMAX network to mitigate the impact of congested nodes. The WiMAX network, with its longer transmission range, can be leveraged to bypass the traffic from some highly congested mesh nodes. The load balancing makes the throughput of the heterogeneous network higher than the sum of the throughput from the WiFi and WiMAX networks if they operate independently. In the widely deployed wireless networks, the infrastructure mode is used, where customer devices only communicate with the base stations. This mode is suitable for normal Internet access. However, some emerging applications, such as P2P file sharing, teleconferencing, network games, require frequent communications among terminals that may be in the coverage of the same base station. The exiting infrastructure mode of the network architecture results in high resource waste due to the unnecessary transmissions via the base station even when both the user could directly communicate. In Chapter IV, we propose a novel network architecture, Local-Interest-Group (LIG), in which all nodes can communicate in any ways according to the application requirements. The real-time algorithm and protocol minimize the interferences among co-existing LIGs and maximize the bandwidth utilization, which greatly improves the overall system performance under multiple performance metrics. In network planning, it is difficult to efficiently locate base stations due to the inaccuracies in the prediction of the traffic density. The movement of traffic to different parts in the city during different times of a day makes fixed base stations either operate at very low load or become highly congested at different time periods. Fortunately, the detailed analysis based on network measurement shows that the movement of traffic density is predicable. In Chapter V, we propose a new network component, Traffic-Tracing Gateway (TTG), which works as the base station but traces the traffic movement taking the advantage of the heterogeneous wireless networks. By following the optimal trajectories, TTGs cover the maximum traffic and provide much better system performance in both single-hop or multi-hop networks. This dissertation proposes efficient resource allocation methods in heterogenous wireless access network with partially overlapping channels and the cooperation between WiFi and WiMAX networks. In the dissertation, we also propose the novel network designs based on local-interest-groups and traffic-tracing gateways, to augment existing wireless access networks and making them more resource efficient while providing higher end-to-end performance.

Heterogeneous networks, that deploy an overlay of small cells with limited coverage and transmit power, over a macro coverage area is the solution by providing capacity and coverage where it is needed. This book presents a comprehensive overview of small cell based heterogeneous networks within the framework of 3GPP LTE-Advanced which is the major enabler of current and future heterogeneous networks. The book first establishes the basics of LTE standards 8 -10. Wherever relevant, the underlying theory of wireless communications is explained and the signaling and protocol aspects of LTE Releases 8-10 are presented. Next the book presents a systematic study of the inter cell interference (eICIC and FeICIC) mechanisms that have been standardized in LTE releases 10 and 11 to mitigate the interference arising in heterogeneous networks. From simple blank subframe design and implementation, the book discusses more advanced transceiver signal processing and carrier aggregation (CA) based mechanisms to improve performance. Besides data, control channel enhancements such as enhanced PDCCH (ePDCCH) are also discussed. Subsequently the book discusses the possibility of base stations being allowed to coordinate to manage interference. This technique, called CoMP, has the potential of vastly improving network performance. However several practical challenges first have to be overcome before this potential can be realized. One of the major challenges of the integration is the network selection strategy. In this thesis, we will propose a network selection strategy that employs the concept of multihop ad hoc network (MANET) based on multiple traffic types. Furthermore, we add channel reservation method to the scheme in order to further reduce voice call blocking probability. We also try to reduce the traffic burden of wireless local area network (WLAN) by requesting services from the cellular network before retransmissions in WLAN when the number of packet retransmissions has exceeded the threshold. System performances are evaluated through extensive simulations and the results show that our schemes not only achieve lower new/handoff voice call blocking probability, but also lead to increased average WLAN throughput compared to the single-hop connection scheme.

This work proposes a user-centric framework for dynamic network selection to make efficient use of the available capabilities of heterogeneous communications ecosystems and to increase the overall service quality that is experienced by the user. The main focus is on the design of a novel strategy for selecting the most suitable network for each individual application on a mobile device. It allows for bundling different network paths to achieve a higher performance and for deferring application requests, for instance, to wait for access networks that are expected to appear in the future. In addition, a path management concept for seamless handovers between different networks and an approach for concurrent multipath transfer in scenarios with heterogeneous network characteristics are presented.

Book excerpt: As the interest in 4G communication systems continues to grow, both academia and industry agree that a symbiotic relationship between various wireless systems is required to provide continuous broadband coverage to mobile users. It is generally accepted that a single wireless access technology alone will be incapable of meeting the various requirements of mobility, data rate and coverage in the future. Future wireless systems are envisioned as being heterogeneous in that they will include a combination of various wireless access technologies such as 3G, WLAN, and WiMAX and will have a common IP core. To fully utilize the various resources and maintain seamless connectivity in the future heterogeneous wireless environment, intelligent handoff schemes that are flexible, scalable and proactive are essential. Therefore, a new handoff decision method, one that works in a novel business model--Heterogeneous Wireless Service Provider (HWSP)--was developed with an aim to improve the mobile user's user experience. More effort was spent to achieve a good level of user satisfaction, by making the entire selection process automatic, and the user oblivious of the underlying network selection intricacies. The algorithm is able to make the final network decision, based on any particular user's speed, location, QoS demands and preference policies. This allows the algorithm to prevent unwanted handoffs and reduce the cost associated with connecting to suboptimal networks.
