Download or read book Nerve Endings of the Soul written by E. Stan Lennard M.D. Sc.D. and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2018-01-22 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a common belief that personal communion from the Holy Spirit to mankind ceased at the closure of the canon of scripture. The information presented in this book shows that interaction between the Holy Spirit and the mind of man enabled by the human spirit is bidirectional and continues in our time. Evidence presented from theological and scientific resources confirms the duality of the immaterial mind and the physical brain of man and substantiates the personal interaction between the Holy Spirit and the mind of human beings. The model for study is the neural synaptic network, incorporating the microsite hypothesis of Sir John C. Eccles. Dualist interaction has been substantiated by contemporary theologians and investigators in the neurosciences and information theory, building on advances in quantum wave theory. A hypothesis is offered by this author for a mechanism for dualist interaction involving probabilistic quantum tunneling across synaptic clefts. Transmission of specified information with meaning and purpose occurs within neural codes in spike trains of action potentials in synaptic networks. Through a lifetime of learning archived in memory, the mind of humans interprets neural codes enabled by the unique capacity for language. Communication from the Holy Spirit, as sender, to human minds, as recipients, draws upon current understandings of information and communication theory. The trigger for initiating spike trains as codes is postulated as an immaterial energy source by which the Holy Spirit communicates with the mind of man. Evidence presented in this book provides a compelling rationale for the reality of bidirectional communication with the living, personal Holy Spirit in our time. That Jesus Christ indwells those who accept his truth as a personal, living spirit is confirmation of the promise in John 14:1521. Interaction with God by his atoning grace through Jesus Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit gives receptive mankind comfort and counsel today to his glory.

Download or read book Sins of the Spirit Blessings of the Flesh Revised Edition written by Matthew Fox and published by North Atlantic Books. This book was released on 2016-03-15 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Visionary theologian and award-winning author Matthew Fox challenges traditional perceptions of good and evil by offering a new theology that lays the groundwork for a more enlightened treatment of ourselves, one another, and all of nature. In this revised edition with a luminous foreword by Deepak Chopra and a new preface that brings the book up to date with the cataclysmic events of the new millennium, Fox illustrates how, contrary to mainstream church doctrine, flesh is the grounding of spirit. Fox argues that our culture has concentrated far too much on transgressions of the flesh while failing to take into account its sacredness. Artfully weaving together the wisdom of East and West, he considers Thomas Aquinas's definition of sin as "misdirected love" and applies parallels between the Eastern teachings of the seven chakras and the Western teachings of the seven capital sins. Fox explains how the chakras teach us to direct the love-energies we all possess and proposes seven positive precepts for living a full and spirited life. He invites us to change the way we think about sin and asserts that we can combat and transform evil through love, generosity, letting go, and creativity. Crafting a blueprint for social change, Sins of the Spirit, Blessings of the Flesh points the way toward a deeper and more compassionate way to live while eloquently revealing the means to confront evil both within and without. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Download or read book The Monster in the Machine written by Zakiya Hanafi and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2000-10-25 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Monster in the Machine tracks the ways in which human beings were defined in contrast to supernatural and demonic creatures during the time of the Scientific Revolution. Zakiya Hanafi recreates scenes of Italian life and culture from the late sixteenth to the early eighteenth centuries to show how monsters were conceptualized at this particular locale and historical juncture—a period when the sacred was being supplanted by a secular, decidedly nonmagical way of looking at the world. Noting that the word “monster” is derived from the Latin for “omen” or “warning,” Hanafi explores the monster’s early identity as a portent or messenger from God. Although monsters have always been considered “whatever we are not,” they gradually were tranformed into mechanical devices when new discoveries in science and medicine revealed the mechanical nature of the human body. In analyzing the historical literature of monstrosity, magic, and museum collections, Hanafi uses contemporary theory and the philosophy of technology to illuminate the timeless significance of the monster theme. She elaborates the association between women and the monstrous in medical literature and sheds new light on the work of Vico—particularly his notion of the conatus—by relating it to Vico’s own health. By explicating obscure and fascinating texts from such disciplines as medicine and poetics, she invites the reader to the piazzas and pulpits of seventeenth-century Naples, where poets, courtiers, and Jesuit preachers used grotesque figures of speech to captivate audiences with their monstrous wit. Drawing from a variety of texts from medicine, moral philosophy, and poetics, Hanafi’s guided tour through this baroque museum of ideas will interest readers in comparative literature, Italian literature, history of ideas, history of science, art history, poetics, women’s studies, and philosophy.
