Book Neoplatonism Classic Reprint

Download or read book Neoplatonism Classic Reprint written by Charles Bigg and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-25 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Neoplatonism Stoic, Humanist, and Reformer were all anxious to simplify dogma. The resemblance between Tyndale and the Roman Stoic is very close. Both thought that the necessary beliefs are few, and attainable by the simplest man, without any help from instruction or authority. It may be that the Roman Stoics did not wholly believe their own creed, and this latitudinarianism enables them to smooth off many of its angles, and use language which, in their mouths, could have no real meaning. Nevertheless the creed is there, though hundreds have read Epictetus and Marcus without perceiving it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Neoplatonism in Relation to Christianity an Essay Classic Reprint

Download or read book Neoplatonism in Relation to Christianity an Essay Classic Reprint written by Charles Elsee and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-18 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Neoplatonism in Relation to Christianity an Essay The subject of the essay is N eoplatonism in re lation to Christianity. The addition of this qualifying clause serves to limit the field of the enquiry, and to differentiate its object from that of a history of philosophy. The writer of such a history regards Neoplatonism purely from a philosophical stand point. He draws out its relation to earlier and later systems, and seeks to assign to it its proper place in the development of human thought. Neo platonism however was not merely a great philo sophical revival: it was a part of a yet greater religious movement: and it is the latter aspect which this essay has to set forth. Book Plotinus Classic Reprint

Download or read book Plotinus Classic Reprint written by George Robert Stow Mead and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plotinus Now of Neoplatonism Plotinus was the coryphaeus, if not the founder. What Plato was to Socrates, Plotinus was to his master, Ammonius Saccas. Neither Socrates nor Ammonius committed anything to writing; Plato and Plotinus were the great expounders of the tenets of their respective schools and, as far as we can judge, far transcended their teachers in brilliancy of genius. Therefore, to the student of Neoplatonism, the works of Plotinus are the most indispensable document, and the basis of the whole system. Just as no Platonic philosopher transcended'the genius of Plato, so no N eoplatonic philosopher sur passed the genius of Plotinus. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theological and Philosophical Works of Hermes Trismegistus, Christian Neoplatonist: Translated From the Original Greek, With Preface, Notes, and Indices These same facts serve also to indicate his actual epoch. Although, as De Rouge1 has shown, very early Egyptian monuments now at Berlin and elsewhere express or insinuate the idea of the Eternal' F ather Creator, and of his Son begotten before the worlds, yet the dogma of the Holy Trinity is, as we shall find, expressed in far more categorical terms, and almost in the very words of St. John, by our Hermes in his Poem andres; so also the doctrine of Baptism and the Regenera tion or new birth, as set forth by St. John in the third chapter of his Gospel, as due to The Man, the only Son of God. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition of this book appeared in 1953; the second, revised and enlarged, in 1960. The present, third edition is essentially a reprint of the second, except for the correction of a few misprints and the following remarks, which refer to some recent publications* and replace the brief preface to the second edition. Neither Eudemus nor Theophrastus, so I said (p. 208f.) knew a branch of theoretical philosophy the object of which would be something called OV ~ OV and which branch would be distinct from theology. And there is no sign that they found such a branch (corresponding to what was later called metaphysica generalis) in Aristotle. To the names of Eudemus and Theophrastus we now can add that of Nicholas of Damascus. In 1965 H.J. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The School of Plato: Its Origin, Development, and Revival Under the Roman Empire 3. It is a matter of some concern to the present age, whether the solution given in the Christian doctrine and ethics (the former immeasurably the more important) is to maintain itself, or to give way to some new sub stitute: whether the victory Of the Church after the long conclave was final, or a mere halt in the march of progress, a truce for a season owing to the fatigue Of the combatants. An inquiry, then, into the speculation Of the Roman age should be Of interest, as helping us to determine how far we are to-day confronted with really novel problems, perplexed by entirely fresh solutions. For it is clear that no one can to-day afford to play the reformer or the prophet, without a thorough knowledge of the past; or to come forward as a propounder Of new truths, without asking whether he may not have been anticipated. TO one who proposes to occupy these high functions, the study Of the Imperial age is above all others indispensable. It is a. Miniature, a summary Of. Book excerpt: Although Neoplatonism has long been studied by classicists, until recently most philosophers saw the ideas of Plotinus et al as a lot of religious/magical mumbo-jumbo. Recent work however has provided a new perspective on the philosophical issues in Neoplatonism and Pauliina Remes new introduction to the subject is the first to take account of this fresh research and provides a reassessment of Neoplatonism's philosophical credentials. Covering the Neoplatonic movement from its founder, Plotinus (AD 204-70) to the closure of Plato's Academy in AD 529 Remes explores the ideas of leading Neoplatonists such as Porphyry, lamblichus, Proclus, Simplicius and Damascius as well as less well-known thinkers. Situating their ideas alongside classical Platonism, Stoicism, and the neo-Pythagoreans as well as other intellectual movements of the time such as Gnosticism, Judaism and Christianity, Remes provides a valuable survey for the beginning student and non-specialist.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Select Works of Plotinus: Translated From the Greek With an Introduction Containing the Substance of Porphyry's Life of Plotinus Enneads, however, is too great a risk without first testing the public interest by a new edition of the only partial translation of any size which we possess. A new edition of Taylor's Select Works of Plotinus is, therefore, presented to the public in the hope that it may pave the way to a complete translation of the works of the greatest of the Neoplatonists. That the signs of the times presage an ever-growing interest in such subjects, and that it is of great importance to learn what solution one of the most penetrating minds of antiquity had to offer of problems in religion and philosophy that are insistently pressing upon us to day, will be seen from the following considerations. Book The Philosophy of Plotinos Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Philosophy of Plotinos Classic Reprint written by Kenneth Sylvan Guthrie and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-25 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Philosophy of Plotinos presents the philosophy of the famous titular philosopher, Plotinos. A student of Ammonius Saccas, Plotinos is an early philosopher of what became termed Neoplatonism. Born in 204 or 205 A.D., Plotinos would have been a follower of Plato. The Philosophy of Plotinos is a brief and accessible read. Guthrie has presented the material in a logical order and does not weigh down the core philosophical principles with exposition. Early chapters introduce the philosophy of Plato and Aristotle, on which Plotinos' philosophy is developed. The Platonic Trinity (the Deity, the intelligible world of ideas, and the sense-world) is introduced early and serves as a foundation for much of the discussion following. Following a simple introduction of the core principles on which Plotinos' philosophy is based, the books enters into the primary subject matter, which are the philosophies of Plotinos himself. For Plotinos, there is nothing else worthy of consideration but the soul. Thus, this book focuses on the seven elements of the soul that compose a human: The God, Universal Mind, Individual Mind, Reason, Sense, Vitality, and Matter. Each of these seven elements (or "realms") is devoted a chapter comprised of several pages, forming the meat of this work. Guthrie completes his presentation of Plotinos' philosophy with a brief look at reincarnation and ethics, as well as discussion on the philosopher's connection with Paganism. At a swift 57 pages, The Philosophy of Plotinos is an excellent book on philosophy that is within the grasp of all readers. While those with a greater knowledge of philosophy will likely take more from this work, one could conceivably make this their first philosophical book. This book is an accomplishment by Guthrie, and is well worth your time. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
