This book was released on 2003 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph explores the mechanisms and timing of possible etiologic events that contribute to fetal and neonatal neurologic injury. the report presents evidence that most cases of cerebral palsy are a result of multifactorial and unpreventable causes that occur during fetal development or in the newborn after delivery, and not a result of an isolated intrapartum hypoxic event. the report contains a set of criteria that may be used to define (or rule out) an acute intrapartum hypoxic event sufficient to cause or suggest cerebral palsy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cerebral palsy (CP), defined as a group of nonprogressive disorders of movement and posture, is the most common cause of severe neurodisability in children. Understanding its physiopathology is crucial to developing some protective strategies. Interruption of oxygen supply to the fetus or brain asphyxia was classically considered to be the main causal factor explaining later CP. However several ante-, peri-, and postnatal factors could be involved in the origins of CP syndromes. Congenital malformations are rarely identified. CP is most often the result of environmental factors, which might interact with genetic vulnerabilities, and could be severe enough to cause the destructive injuries visible with standard imaging (i.e., ultrasonographic study or MRI), predominantly in the white matter in preterm infants and in the gray matter and the brainstem nuclei in full-term newborns. Moreover they act on an immature brain and could alter the remarkable series of developmental events. Biochemical key factors originating in cell death or cell process loss, observed in hypoxic−ischemic as well as inflammatory conditions, are excessive production of proinflammatory cytokines, oxidative stress, maternal growth factor deprivation, extracellular matrix modifications, and excessive release of glutamate, triggering the excitotoxic cascade. Only two strategies have succeeded in decreasing CP in 2-year-old children: hypothermia in full-term newborns with moderate neonatal encephalopathy and administration of magnesium sulfate to mothers in preterm labor.

Book Improving outcomes in cerebral palsy with early intervention new translational approaches

Download or read book Improving outcomes in cerebral palsy with early intervention new translational approaches written by Anna Purna Basu and published by Frontiers E-books. This book was released on 2015-03-30 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this Research Topic was to collate articles describing prediction of outcomes of pre- and perinatal lesions leading to cerebral palsy, basic research in animal models and human subjects, and ideas for, and trials of, interventions in the first two years of life. CP arises from insults to the sensorimotor cortex, subcortical axon tracts and subplate. The aetiology is complex and often multifactorial. The outcome is not simply a loss of voluntary control due to disruption of descending pathways, but also involves abnormal development of reflex and corticospinal circuitry. CP may be viewed as aberrant plasticity in response to a lesion, indeed, abnormalities in movement are subtle at first but develop subsequently. It is misleading to suppose that developmental mechanisms are self-reparative. The challenge is to understand activitydependent fine tuning of neural circuitry during normal development and to find how to promote desirable plasticity whilst limiting undesirable effects following developmental lesions. However, before proposing interventions, we have to develop our ability to predict the severity of neonatal insults. We solicited a variety of articles, including long and short reviews, original research and opinion pieces, from both basic scientists and clinicians. Likewise we, as editors, have complementary knowledge and experience in this area. Anna Basu is an academic pediatric neurologist and Gavin Clowry is a developmental neuroscientist.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Development of the brain and the emergence of the mind constitute some of the most important concerns of contemporary biology. Disturbances during fetal life may have profound implications for a child's future neurological and psychological development, which can in turn impact society. The new edition of this highly respected work presents a comprehensive review of the basic mechanisms of brain development and the pathophysiology of disorders of the infant brain, written by a team of distinguished neuroscientists, neonatologists, and neuropediatricians. The book follows the main milestones of brain development, from formation of the neural tube and wiring of the neurons in the brain. Neurotrophic factors, neurotransmitters, glial cell biology, cerebral circulation development of sensory functions are all described in detail. Furthermore, there are more philosophical chapters on the evolution of the brain and the emergence of consciousness. Clinical considerations are highlighted where relevant.

Book Cell Therapy for Perinatal Brain Injury

Download or read book Cell Therapy for Perinatal Brain Injury written by Haruo Shintaku and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-01 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a wealth of insights, advances and new perspectives on cell therapy for different types of neonatal ischemic disease, such as Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE), Periventricular Leukomalacia (PVL) and neonatal infarction. These diseases pose serious challenges for neonatologists and neurologists, because the severe sequelae lead to decreasing QOL for patients and their families. Accordingly, new treatments for neonatal ischemic diseases are needed all over the world. The book develops new effective therapies combined with hypothermia therapy, an established treatment for HIE. After reviewing past approaches, it presents cutting-edge topics in cell therapy, one of the most promising candidates for treating neonatal ischemic disease. Cell Therapy for Neonatal Ischemic Disease will offer readers a better understanding of the current state of the art in this field from bench to bedside, and inspire researchers and physicians to further explore this evolving therapy.

Book Magnetic Resonance of Myelin Myelination and Myelin Disorders

Download or read book Magnetic Resonance of Myelin Myelination and Myelin Disorders written by Jacob Valk and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 734 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is now considered the imaging modality of choice for the majority of disorders affecting the central nervous system. This is particularly true for gray and white matter disorders, thanks to the superb soft tis sue contrast in MRI which allows gray matter, unmyelinated, and myelinated white matter to be distinguished and their respective disorders identified. The pre sent book is devoted to the disorders of myelin and myelination. A growing amount of detailed in vivo information about myelin, myelination, and myelin dis orders has been derived both from MRI and from MR spectroscopy (MRS). This prompted us to review the clinical, laboratory, biochemical, and pathological data on this subject in order to integrate all available information and to provide im proved insights into normal and disordered myelin and myelination. We will show how the synthesis of all available information contributes to the interpretation of MR images. After a brief historical review about the increasing knowledge on myelin and my elin disorders, we propose a new classification of myelin disorders based on the subcellular localization of the enzymatic defects as far as the inborn errors of me tabolism are concerned. This classification serves as a guide throughout the book. All items of the classification will be discussed and, whenever relevant and possi ble, be illustrated by MR images.

  • Author : A. David Edwards
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2013-04-04
  • ISBN : 1107328845
  • Pages : 245 pages

Download or read book Neonatal Neural Rescue written by A. David Edwards and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-04-04 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Worldwide more than one million babies die annually from perinatal asphyxia and its associated complications such as neonatal encephalopathy – one of the major causes of cerebral palsy and cognitive deficiencies in children aside from prematurity. Cooling the head – or the entire body – minimizes neuronal death, enabling the neonatal brain to be 'rescued' thus greatly improving developmental outcomes. Hypothermic neural rescue therapy has revolutionized the treatment of this condition and is a major recent achievement in neonatal medicine. This landmark book provides a brief scientific underpinning of hypothermic neural rescue therapy and lays out the evidence base for good practice. Internationally recognized authorities give practical advice, drawn from personal experience, on how to deliver hypothermia in the neonatal intensive care unit. A valuable addition to any neonatal unit, this is essential reading for neonatologists, neonatal nurses and paediatric neurologists.
