Book excerpt: There are a lot of smart scientists working on ways to improve our species. Some are working within medical communities, trying to cure cancers and prevent inheritable diseases. Others are working in academic environments, doing research on how to make us smarter, live longer, or be better adapted for space travel. Still others are hacking away in secretive government labs far from the public eye. Right in plain sight are hundreds of community biolabs operating all around the world.Where will all these changes take us? Some may think or hope that the scientific elite in Boston or London will be making hard choices on behalf of the planet. But the future of Homo sapiens will be determined by billions of individuals whose reproductive and medical choices may already be altering our species more than any policy recommendations ever could. What is it we are becoming? Or to get to the heart of this book, what is it that we want Homo sapiens to become? We've been asking smart people wherever we go who are thinking about these topics. Scientists, of course. But also sociologists, anthropologists, bioethicists, visual artists, and Buddhist monks. The result is Neo.Life: 25 Visions for the Future of Our Species.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Freedom of the sort implicated in acting freely or with free will is important to the truth of different sorts of moral judgment, such as judgments of moral responsibility and those of moral obligation. Little thought, however, has been invested into whether appraisals of good or evil presuppose free will. This important topic has not commanded the attention it deserves owing to what is perhaps a prevalent assumption that freedom leaves judgments concerning good and evil largely unaffected. The central aim of this book is to dispute this assumption by arguing for the relevance of free will to the truth of two sorts of such judgment: welfare-ranking judgments or judgments of personal well-being (when is one's life intrinsically good for the one who lives it?), and world-ranking judgments (when is a possible world intrinsically better than another?). The book also examines free will’s impact on the truth of such judgments for central issues in moral obligation and in the free will debate. This book should be of interest to those working on intrinsic value, personal well-being, moral obligation, and free will.

  • Author : Melinda E. Cooper
  • Publisher : University of Washington Press
  • Release : 2011-02-01

Download or read book Life as Surplus written by Melinda E. Cooper and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2011-02-01 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the period between the 1970s and the present, Life as Surplus is a pointed and important study of the relationship between politics, economics, science, and cultural values in the United States today. Melinda Cooper demonstrates that the history of biotechnology cannot be understood without taking into account the simultaneous rise of neoliberalism as a political force and an economic policy. From the development of recombinant DNA technology in the 1970s to the second Bush administration's policies on stem cell research, Cooper connects the utopian polemic of free-market capitalism with growing internal contradictions of the commercialized life sciences. The biotech revolution relocated economic production at the genetic, microbial, and cellular level. Taking as her point of departure the assumption that life has been drawn into the circuits of value creation, Cooper underscores the relations between scientific, economic, political, and social practices. In penetrating analyses of Reagan-era science policy, the militarization of the life sciences, HIV politics, pharmaceutical imperialism, tissue engineering, stem cell science, and the pro-life movement, the author examines the speculative impulses that have animated the growth of the bioeconomy. At the very core of the new post-industrial economy is the transformation of biological life into surplus value. Life as Surplus offers a clear assessment of both the transformative, therapeutic dimensions of the contemporary life sciences and the violence, obligation, and debt servitude crystallizing around the emerging bioeconomy.

Book The Politics of Big Fantasy

Download or read book The Politics of Big Fantasy written by John C. McDowell and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-07-16 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing critical attention to a particular set of science fiction and fantasy films--Larry and Andy Wachowski's The Matrix, George Lucas' Star Wars saga, and Joss Whedon's Avengers--this book utilizes a wide-ranging set of critical tools to illuminate their political ideologies, while also examining any resistant and complicating turns or byways the films may provide. What they all have in common ideologically is that they--or at least the genres they belong to--tend to be regarded as belonging to politically conservative frames of sociocultural reference. With the Star Wars saga, however, this idea is shown to be superficial and weak.

Book excerpt: They were best friends who fell in love years ago. Then everything fell apart. Now one of them is looking to turn back time. When Billy was in his last year of high school, Neo and Billy were inseparable, even though they were from opposite sides of the tracks. Then, one night, Billy ruined everything, and Neo hammered the nail in the coffin. Despite still seeing each other all the time, and almost fourteen years later, they still haven’t spoken about that night. But nothing has changed for Billy. There is no one else out there for him. No amount of fame or fortune could buy or replace Neo. Neo is the one for him. Always has been. It’s long past the point Billy should have let the past go and dogged Neo’s every step until he gave in, but there’s no time like the present. Now he just needs Neo to cooperate. Neo is fine with Billy being the one, even though they’ll never be together. For him, it’s a nice memory to look back on as long as he doesn’t get to the part where Billy chose his rich friends over him. That’s okay. Neo got his revenge. They’re even and are cordial these days. So what if he can’t stop eyeing Billy’s very nice physique and gorgeous eyes? That’s life. He’ll live. All he has to do is keep resisting Billy’s nonstop advances because Neo knows the one truth that will never change. Money will always choose money in the end. Exhale is the second book in Charity Parkerson’s Fresh Hell series, where it's something different every day in the battlefield known as life. These are a combination of sports, bi-awakening, and several other sub genres with interconnecting characters. This series is best when read in order.

Book A History of Civilization in 50 Disasters History in 50

Download or read book A History of Civilization in 50 Disasters History in 50 written by Gale Eaton and published by Tilbury House Publishers and Cadent Publishing. This book was released on 2015-10-23 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: *2016 IBPA Benjamin Franklin Silver Award Winner* The earth shakes and cracks open. Volcanoes erupt. Continents freeze, bake, and flood. Droughts parch the land. Wildfires and hundred-year storms consume anything in their paths. Invisible clouds of disease and pestilence probe for victims. Tidal waves sweep ashore from the vast sea. The natural world is a dangerous place, but one species has evolved a unique defense against the hazards: civilization. Civilization rearranges nature for human convenience. Clothes and houses keep us warm; agriculture feeds us; medicine fights our diseases. It all works—most of the time. But key resources lie in the most hazardous places, so we choose to live on river flood plains, on the slopes of volcanoes, at the edge of the sea, above seismic faults. We pack ourselves into cities, Petri dishes for germs. Civilization thrives on the edge of disaster. And what happens when natural forces meet molasses holding tanks, insecticides, deepwater oil rigs, nuclear power plants? We learn the hard way how to avoid the last disaster—and maybe how to create the next one. What we don’t know can, indeed, hurt us. This book’s white-knuckled journey from antiquity to the present leads us to wonder at times how humankind has survived. And yet, as Author Gale Eaton makes clear, civilization has advanced not just in spite of disasters but in part because of them. Hats off to human resilience, ingenuity, and perseverance! They’ve carried us this far; may they continue to do so into our ever-hazardous future. The History in 50 series explores history by telling thematically linked stories. Each book includes 50 illustrated narrative accounts of people and events—some well-known, others often overlooked—that, together, build a rich connect the-dots mosaic and challenge conventional assumptions about how history unfolds. Dedicated to the premise that history is the greatest story ever told. Includes a mix of “greatest hits” with quirky, surprising, provocative accounts. Challenges readers to think and engage. Includes a glossary of technical terms; sources by chapter; teaching resources as jumping-off points for student research; and endnotes. Fountas & Pinnell Level Z+

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Against the unforgiving landscape of a hospital, I fell in love with a mischievous, sun-eyed boy who became my only joy in that desolate place. That’s what made it all the more soul-crushing when he committed suicide in front of me. Since then, I've sworn never to love anyone again. With three exceptions: My friends, Sony, Neo, and Coeur, a little gang of rebellious, dying kids. Sony leads the charge with the air of freedom and only one lung to breathe it. Neo, a bad-tempered and wheel-chaired writer, keeps track of our great deeds from stealing to terrorizing our nurse. Coeur is the beautiful boy, the muscle, the gentle giant with a failing heart. Before death inevitably knocks down our doors, my thieves and I have one last heist planned. A great escape that will take us far from abusive parents, crippling loss, and the realities of our diseases. So what happens when someone else walks through the door? What happens when a girl joins our party and renders me speechless with her mischievous smile? What happens when she has suns in her eyes, and as terrified as I am to lose again, I start to fall?
