Book Neither the Spirit without the Flesh

Download or read book Neither the Spirit without the Flesh written by Steven W. Tyra and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-02-22 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book claims that John Calvin developed “Greek” doctrines of the interim state of souls, resurrection, and beatific vision through his reading of ancient Christian sources like Irenaeus of Lyons. “Greek” had been a technical term in Western theology since at least the 12th century to denote heterodox eschatology. Thomas Aquinas had employed it in that sense, and early modern Catholics like Robert Bellarmine and Pierre Coton in turn applied it to Calvin. The book demonstrates that, in this respect at least, Calvin's opponents were correct: he was a “Greek.” However, it questions whether that fact should lead modern theologians to dismiss him as a resource for contemporary reflection. Calvin's deep respect for and continuity with early Christian voices may serve as a positive model for theologians today, particularly in the Reformed tradition. By the same token, Reformed thinkers who seek inspiration from medieval scholasticism may find their relationship to Calvin complicated by the case presented here.

Download or read book Living in the Flesh by the Spirit written by Brian H. Thomas and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-02-05 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does Paul mean by "the flesh"? There is a great deal of confusion among laymen and disagreement among scholars on this issue. Christians know that we are supposed to "walk by the Spirit" so that they will not gratify the desires of the flesh, but it is not entirely clear what these expressions mean. Furthermore, Paul can also be confusing when he addresses the Christian's relationship to the flesh--are we in the flesh or not? This book clarifies these issues for us by exploring the different meanings of "flesh" throughout the Bible, and analyzing the influence both of Old Testament conceptions of "flesh" as well as new salvation-historical realities on Paul's thinking, especially in the context of the controversy over circumcision in Galatians. By carefully following Paul's thought, we will also gain greater insight into other Pauline themes that intersect with his theology of the flesh: new creation and his view of this age and the one to come. Most importantly, we will discover Paul's own program for our spiritual transformation so that we may live a life of Christlike love and service despite the moral weakness of our flesh.

Book Learn to Walk by the Spirit and Stop Walking by the Flesh

Download or read book Learn to Walk by the Spirit and Stop Walking by the Flesh written by Gary Severns and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2016-07-27 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flesh VS Spirit You're going to be a slave to the one you choose to obey, either to the flesh unto sin or to the spirit unto righteousness. One leads to death the other leads to life. (Rom. 6:16-23 NASB) Many Christians have no understanding of what it truly means to walk by the spirit. They don't know how to be truly transformed in order to develop a spiritual mind. If we learn to recognize our fleshly nature as compared to our spirit, we can learn to choose more effectively which nature to listen to and which nature to reject! We need to make it a habit of examining what we're looking at, what we're listening to, what we're doing, what we're saying and what we're thinking or imagining to find out what our mine set is. By examining the fruit, you will know if your mind is set on the flesh or the spirit. (Gal.5:19-25) This is a tool you can use for the rest of your life. It will help to sharpen your spiritual focus so you can see more clearly. The more you take God's Word to heart and learn to do it His way the easier it will be to overcome sin and become a slave to righteousness, which is truly freedom. What was once vague can become black and white because our spiritual nature and fleshly nature become easier to identify. God gives power to our spirit so we can learn to reject sin and embrace His righteousness. We need to wake up and learn to conform to your new identity in Christ. We should all know what it truly means to be in Christ and what it means to be born again with a spirit that's regenerated, freed from sin and without blemish.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever had a question about Gods Holy Spirit? Just what is the baptism of the Holy Spirit? Are the gifts and power of the Holy Spirit for today? When and how are we filled with the Holy Spirit? Does talking about the Holy Spirit make you uncomfortable? Are you offended by Gods Spirit because of the abuses of others? Is there a counterfeit spirit at work today? Do you worry that maybe you have blasphemed the Holy Spirit? Have unmet expectations left you disillusioned with Gods Spirit? Has uncertainty caused you to put off the Holy Spirit? Are you afraid of the Holy Spirit because of what He might make you do? What is speaking in tongues? Is it real, and is it necessary? Have you ever considered what the baptism of the Holy Spirit means for eternal life? Why do so many in our churches either reject or misrepresent the Holy Spirit? This book seeks to answer these questions and more in the most direct and simple way possible.

Book The Flesh spirit Conflict in Galatians

Download or read book The Flesh spirit Conflict in Galatians written by Walter Bo Russell and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book questions the long-standing and pervasive view that "flesh" is a force within the life of the Christian that he or she must continually struggle against and overcome only by choosing to walk in the power of God's "Spirit." This internal dualism between the forces of "flesh" and "Spirit" emerges as both a central paradigm for the spiritual life and a major construct in approaching Paul's theology. It is the central thesis of this book that this internal dualism, while accurate in some respects, is nonetheless significantly flawed in viewing "flesh" and "Spirit" as an internal polarity. Contents: ^I The Flesh/Spirit Conflict in Theology, Lexicography and History; A Rhetorical Analysis of Galatians and the Flesh/Spirit Conflict; The Social Dynamics of the Flesh/Spirit Conflict; A Thematic Analysis of the Flesh/Spirit Conflict in Galatians; The Flesh/Spirit Conflict in Galatians 5:13-26; The Flesh/Spirit Conflict in Galatians 6:1-18; Some Conclusions about the Flesh/Spirit Conflict; Works Cited; Index of Scripture References.

Book DISCERNING SPIRIT and Flesh

Download or read book DISCERNING SPIRIT and Flesh written by Bob Benoit and published by . This book was released on 2020-04-30 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is an untold war we fight daily. It's our flesh (spirit, soul, worldliness, fear) and the Spirit. Words that are used in the Bible to describe our relationship with the Spirit include: hostility toward God, enmity, war against the Spirit, lust against one another, death, friendship with the world, temptation and deception. To win the war, we must replace the flesh with, and by, the Spirit of Christ. This study exposes the enemy of our soul. It is so important to understand the Spirit and flesh, but please don't just read this without reading the next two studies: "PUT ON the LORD JESUS Christ" and "WALK in the SPIRIT." Putting on the Lord Jesus Christ helps us understand the finished work of the cross and how to appropriate it for God's glory. Walking in the Spirit empowers us to become overcomers in Him, to walk the Christian walk of faith in the fruit of the Spirit. Scripture explains Scripture. So each lesson herein is a paragraph or two of scripture, in context, sorted by theme, where the words "flesh" and/or Spirit" (and their various synonyms) appear in the same paragraph; followed by four questions. Each Scripture is in context, but it's best if you also read what surrounds these verses. We suggest you start by reading the Gospel message under the heading, Start Here. We cannot discern Spirit from flesh without knowing Jesus and responding to the Good News. Also included herein is Appendix A - Small Group Facilitation Guide with step-by-step instructions to help homegroup and Bible study leaders host interactive meetings. Plus Appendix B - Sample Answers is an example of how one might answer the questions, particularly the first time. Now, let's get ready to discern and distinguish between the Spirit and flesh! The follow up to this study is called, "PUT ON the LORD JESUS Christ" which helps believers understand and then appropriate the finished work of the cross. We also recommend the one after that to complete the series, "WALK in the SPIRIT." This study reminds us how to be overcomers and how to walk the Christian walk in the fruit of the Spirit. For all you songwriters interested in worship song content, consider the songwriter version of this booklet, "DISCERNING SPIRIT and flesh (Songwriters' Series)." The scriptures are virtually the same ones used in this book, except that they are followed by different questions and helpful hints to inspire the writing of upwardly focused worship songs. DISCERNING SPIRIT and flesh (Teachers Series) is available for pastors and teachers who create their own inspirational, comprehensive, theme-based, Bible sermon series. The Scriptures are the same, but with different research suggestions for sermon preparation. The questions guide students and teacher to focus in on actions that are in the Truth, use Scripture to explain Scripture, encourage everyone to KNOW God better and be doers of the Word. So that the Word of God will correct, reproof, train and equip believers to be disciples of Jesus Christ. Thank you for studying the discerning of Spirit and flesh!

Book excerpt: Are you living a rich and satisfying life? I sure wasn't. I was alive in the body but not really living as the Lord desired for me. I knew there was so much more, I just didn't know how to get there. There are so many of us who aren't living this satisfying life that the Lord desires for us. It may look to the outside world that we have it all together and have everything we want and need but deep down we are miserable and unsatisfied. Is that you? Do you really want to know why you aren't living that satisfying (abundant) life that Jesus desires for you in John 10:10? Like me, you aren't doing...Jesus replied, "But even more blessed are all who hear the word of God and put it into practice." Luke 11:18 (NLT) You aren't living because you continue to disobey the Lord. I have been called to teach the "not-so-good news" in the Good News so that when you hear the Good News it is really Good News! We do this by self-examination. That means looking at our thoughts, words, and actions and seeing how we are measuring up with the Lords standards. This first book in this series is the most important. In order to be blessed, to have joy in your tribulations, to be at peace with God and others, to live that abundant life on earth, and to be used by God, you must put off a preoccupation of self and start living the basics of Christianity. You must put off your anger, your unforgiveness, your unloving ways, your unsubmissiveness, your fear, worry, depression and your life dominating sins. This is achieved when you understand His focus for our living. "Deny self, carry your cross, and follow Him." Luke 9:23-24.

Book Taking Authority over the Flesh

Download or read book Taking Authority over the Flesh written by Everlyn Clay Bryant and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-08 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever thought about how much time we waste doing the same thing over and over again? Have you ever thought about how year after year you're spinning you wheels trying to overcome that one thing that has had you bound for 20 years? If you've had a red flag to go up, you recognize that you need to quit but not understanding how to quite you just stop for a season and soon as that temptation raises its ugly head you fall back into the arms of that thing, and the cycle starts all over again. Are you addicted to something and your heart desire is to quite? The answer to all that you need is in your loving and trusting a God that you've never seen. Nothing worth having is ever free, but at least you did not have to give your life or the life of your son for the freedom that you're seeking. God has taken care of that for you and me. The good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ is just what you need. We don't have to wander in the wilderness any longer we can go in and possess the Land that's flowing with plenty; in this case, it's our mind. Yes, that is exactly what I said we need to possess the promised land of our mind. We have to declare like Joshua declared, we are able to go up and take the country and possess the land from Jordan to the sea, though the giants may be there our way to hinder, God has given us the victory. Amen. Man struggle day after day seeking to find a way to escape from the conditions of their lives, not understanding that God from the foundation of the world have already designed a plan for those who will receive His protection and provision for their lives. He tells us that whosoever will let them come, that encompasses a multitude. Jesus is the Good Shepherd in the natural the shepherd looks out for the well-fair of the sheep. Much more will the Father of the Shepherd look out for those who trust in Him. We live in a world where Adam gave his authority to Satan and now Satan is the god of this world. Even so, we have been given authority (by God) to put our flesh under subjection to our spirit. But if your mind is constantly on evil things it is impossible for your spirit to be in control of your body, therefore we have to renew our mind with the word of God. In so doing we give our spirit man authority over our flesh and that comes from each individual taking authority over their mind. Our mind is like an oven if you don't take the time to turn it on nothing is going to get done. I beseech you brothers and sisters by the mercies of God that YOU present your body a living sacrifice holy and acceptable to God, which is YOUR reasonable (You owe Him) service. For many years in my life I felt alone even though I came from a family of eleven siblings. When I had time and was not working in the fields I would spend hours along writing stories and poems. Later in life when I went off to college there was always someone playing cards in the student union and I got pulled into participating so that I would not appear anti-social but that wasn't my cup of tea either. I later married a made from Chicago that was on a tour of duty in Germany, so in my last year of college I got married and a couple of days later my then husband was off to Germany and I had to wait for paper work to be completed before I joined him. Weeks later I was off to Germany traveling alone to a country I had only seen on TV. I was all of 20 and on my way to another country alone to be reunited to a man I had only really known one month. While in Germany I would have these dreams of scary things holding me down and I was unable to get up, although I was awake. On one occasion I was able to call home and I explained the incident to my Father and his reply, those are demon spirit riding your back coming to oppress you. He said, what you need to do is when that happens again call on the name of Jesus and keep calling until they let you lose. I'm like thanks dad, I'm over here hundreds of miles from home and you tell me this

Book Who Am I

Download or read book Who Am I written by Dr. Juliet Tennison and published by Juliet Tennison. This book was released on with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discover how to live a spiritual life instead of a soulish life. We are tripartite beings, having body, soul, and spirit. The spirit is conscious of God; the soul, of self; and the body, of the things of this world. In this relatable treatise, backed by her own experience, author Juliet Tennison describes how to avoid war within ourselves as she examines the spirit, soul, and body and unpacks scriptural truths about spiritual versus carnal living. God created us for love and to have an intimate relationship with Him. We will never understand who we are until we see ourselves as God sees us. In the Garden of Eden, man had perfect relationship with God, but after the Fall, sin separated man from Him. Adam and Eve hid from God because the soul had become self-conscious instead of God-conscious, and they could no longer enjoy walking in fellowship with a Holy God. We were created to love God and to love others, but our soul keeps us from ever achieving this purpose. We must lose our soul to love and we must seek God, who is love. God created us to live a supernatural life by the power of the Holy Spirit. Our brain, our will, and our emotions, which make up our soul, are natural. The body we walk in is natural. The soul and the spirit are so close to one another that the two require the word of God to divide them, to separate them from each other: “For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12).So many of us practice religion without relationship. This is “churchianity”—we attend church but have no relationship with Jesus Christ. We pray for forgiveness without repenting our sins. Repentance means to stop doing our will and to start doing God’s Will. We struggle in our walk with God because we fail to differentiate between our soul and our spirit; we substitute the thoughts or emotions of the soul for the works of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit can only take residence in our spirit. It is in our spirit that we worship, fellowship and stay connected to God for “God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” – John 4:24.The knowledge of God is not some generic idea that He exists “up there.” It involves an intimate acquaintance with His character and actions. God’s love is manifested in His Son Jesus Christ’s life, death, and resurrection. He has placed His Spirit within His adopted children, giving us a heart to love Him, a mind to know Him, and a will to obey Him. The salvation which comes from God means being completely delivered from our self and being placed into perfect union with Him by the Power of the Holy Spirit. As fallen humans, we need a saviour to save us from our own wicked soul. Salvation is only understood in our spirit and only when the spirit is made alive by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. The soul cannot comprehend this, because it is filled with its own pride; neither can the body, which is world-conscious and only understands the worldly things. Knowing these things, we learn to live a victorious spiritual life as the Holy Spirit lives in our spirit, and we crucify the detrimental desires of the soul and body.

Book We Fight Not Against Flesh and Blood

Download or read book We Fight Not Against Flesh and Blood written by Donald Evans and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2021-05-06 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, we fight not against flesh and blood; it is about many agendas. Satan and the spirit world of spirit persons, demons, have set their goals to accomplish against Jehovah God's creation of the human race, which have brought spiritual conflicts across the earth and which the human race are not aware of. Human beings believe their fight is against flesh and blood, which it isn't. Our fight is against wicked spirit persons, demons, real and alive spirit persons, who have entered multitudes of human bodies to do whatever it takes to accomplish their goals, which there are many. Neither age nor gender is no exception in accomplishing their goals. Children of all ages are in some kind of spiritual conflict. Why was prayer abolished out of their school system? Why is the name of Jesus Christ, the Son of God not to be used or spoken of on such campuses? Why can't they pray in the name of Jesus when others around them pray to their gods openly? In these writings there are many answers to questions people in general like to know, but won't ask; even adults want to ask. I've been in spiritual warfare or conflict my entire life. I have seen Satan, the devil, several times, whom God revealed to me. Satan and demons are real spirit persons as any human being on the earth. I've dialogued with the devil, not knowing that it was Satan transitioned as a real person, a human being. God revealed to me who Satan was. He walks the earth today as a human being, which only God can identify Satan as a man, a real person, yet spirit being Satan spirit of deception in control, who passes the power of influence over every alcoholic and alcoholism throughout the entire world. The world needs to know the "truth." There isn't any medical cure for the alcoholic nor alcoholism anywhere throughout the entire world. Why isn't there? Because alcoholism is not a medical problem; it is a demonically controlled problem, controlled by alcohol of spirit persons. Demons who have entered human bodies and only by Jesus Christ's name can cure or cast these alcohol demons out of the human bodies. There is no other-I reiterate, there is no other prominent cure but in the name of Jesus Christ. Jehovah God is my witness of this truth and testimony. I was held in bondage and control for nearly forty years, demon-possessed and demonically controlled by alcohol demons, not knowing my condition until I called out to God and God cured me. I heard voices in my head for as many years; the voices also left. My cure came on March 18, 1984. I've never drunk nor had the urge to drink nor the desire to drink nor smoked another cigarette since that day. God is my witness of this testimony!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Trementozzi contends that conservative-traditional Christianity has uncritically adopted an intellectualist (i.e., rationally-driven) view of faith in its understanding and practice of salvation. Throughout, he maintains that an intellectualist soteriology should be rejected because it prioritizes the rational over other behavioral and affective aspects of faith. An intellectualist rendering of salvation is incomplete because human experience is neither abstract nor gnostic—it is embodied and experientially relevant. An intellectualist soteriology simply cannot account for the dynamic and transforming possibilities of saving grace. Salvation in the Flesh offers an innovative perspective on the embodied nature of faith and the centrality of the Holy Spirit in the Christian doctrine of salvation. Drawing from the cognitive neurosciences and psychology, Trementozzi argues for a holistic awareness of cognition to better inform an embodied understanding of faith. In dialogue with the cognitive sciences, he appropriates Jonathan Edwards’ theology of religious affections, early church practices, and pentecostal spirituality to highlight the soteriological significance of orthodoxy, orthopraxy, and orthopathy for a renewal soteriology of embodiment. In doing so, Trementozzi offers a vision of salvation that more thoroughly accounts for the multifarious ways God’s saving grace interacts with human flesh and blood.

He asked how I could say that it was possible of which no example could be adduced. Aeterna Press

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Publishers Weekly Best Book in Religion 2020 Foreword Review's INDIES Book of the Year Award, Religion In Theological Territories, David Bentley Hart, one of America's most eminent contemporary writers on religion, reflects on the state of theology "at the borders" of other fields of discourse—metaphysics, philosophy of mind, science, the arts, ethics, and biblical hermeneutics in particular. The book advances many of Hart's larger theological projects, developing and deepening numerous dimensions of his previous work. Theological Territories constitutes something of a manifesto regarding the manner in which theology should engage other fields of concern and scholarship. The essays are divided into five sections on the nature of theology, the relations between theology and science, the connections between gospel and culture, literary representations of and engagements with transcendence, and the New Testament. Hart responds to influential books, theologians, philosophers, and poets, including Rowan Williams, Jean-Luc Marion, Tomáš Halík, Sergei Bulgakov, Jennifer Newsome Martin, and David Jones, among others. The twenty-six chapters are drawn from live addresses delivered in various settings. Most of the material has never been printed before, and those parts that have appear here in expanded form. Throughout, these essays show how Hart's mind works with the academic veneer of more formal pieces stripped away. The book will appeal to both academic and non-academic readers interested in the place of theology in the modern world.
