Book Slave Songs of the United States

Download or read book Slave Songs of the United States written by William Francis Allen and published by Applewood Books. This book was released on 1996 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1867, this book is a collection of songs of African-American slaves. A few of the songs were written after the emancipation, but all were inspired by slavery. The wild, sad strains tell, as the sufferers themselves could, of crushed hopes, keen sorrow, and a dull, daily misery, which covered them as hopelessly as the fog from the rice swamps. On the other hand, the words breathe a trusting faith in the life after, to which their eyes seem constantly turned.

Book The Importance of Negro Spirituals and Gospel Songs in the Afro American s Life from 1871 Until Today

Download or read book The Importance of Negro Spirituals and Gospel Songs in the Afro American s Life from 1871 Until Today written by Luc Rigobert Mbasegue-Oyono and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Afro-american still experiences an uncomfortable situation within American society. The reason is that he still bears the scars of slavery, which had stripped him of his human dignity. In spite of the emancipation proclamation, he still sends signals of heartburn and frustration. Indeed, at the bank of American justice, his account has a permanent overdraft economically, politically and socially. The Church managed to rehabilitate him both as a human being and as a beneficiary of salvation by Jesus Chrsit. The Church, then, offered the Negro the setting of the composition and the development of both negro spirituals and gospel songs. Although these were previously intended for the praise and the glorification of God, the Negro has however been using both categories of music to protest against being enslaved, to make suggestions for a social change in equity and harmony. While singing these songs, the afroamerican found himself a talented artist who had to exploit his musicla genius far beyond the Church. The products of this exploitation and their commercialization helped the Negro gain respect and recognition as an artist. He discovered that he was somebody. A discussion about the importance of negro spirituals and gospel songs in the Afro-american's life is highlighting the important role played by both negro spirituals and gospel songs in the rehabilitation of the Negro as a human being, and the integration of the Afro-american into American society as a citizen.
