Download or read book History of Nebraska Fourth Edition written by James C. Olson and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2014-12-31 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History of Nebraska was originally created to mark the territorial centennial of Nebraska and then revised to coincide with the statehood centennial. This one-volume history quickly became the standard text for the college student and reference for the general reader, unmatched for generations as the only comprehensive history of the state. This fourth edition, revised and updated, preserves the spirit and intelligence of the original. Incorporating the results of years of scholarship and research, this edition gives fuller attention to such topics as the Native American experience in Nebraska and the accomplishments and circumstances of the state’s women and minorities. It also provides a historical analysis of the state’s dramatic changes in the past two decades.

From its beginning in 1869 as a land-grant institution on the edge of the prairie, the University of Nebraska–Lincoln has expanded the frontiers of opportunity for nearly three hundred thousand graduates. This lavishly illustrated volume celebrates Nebraska’s first 150 years with a look back at the alumni, faculty, and staff whose work has made an enduring impact on the world, from Willa Cather’s Pulitzer Prize–winning literature to James Van Etten’s groundbreaking research in virology. This book also highlights the iconic buildings and landmarks on campus and the activities and experiences of students, from the East Campus Dairy Store and the Daily Nebraskan to a celebration of the Big Red sensation of Husker athletics, recognizing outstanding coaches and student-athlete achievements. Dear Old Nebraska U highlights creative inventions and groundbreaking research, from Charles Bessey’s botany classes to the Jeffrey S. Raikes School of Computer Science and Management. The University will continue to have a profound influence on the state of Nebraska and the rest of the global community for generations to come. For instance, initiatives such as Nebraska Innovation Campus—a site dedicated to ambitious research and technology ventures, including the Nebraska Food for Health Center and the Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute—are working to improve the health and well-being of people worldwide. The Center for Plant Science Innovation similarly provides research leadership in the use of biomass as an energy resource, and the National Strategic Research Institute partners with U.S. Strategic Command to strengthen our national security. The University’s official motto is “Literis Dedicata et Omnibus Artibus” (Dedicated to Letters and All the Arts). Nebraska has fulfilled that aspirational motto and will continue to be a place of pride for Huskers everywhere. There is no place like our dear old Nebraska U.

Book The History of Nebraska Law

Download or read book The History of Nebraska Law written by Alan G. Gless and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the aftermath of the Civil War, legislators in the Nebraska Territory grappled with the responsibility of forming a state government as well as with the larger issues of reconstructing the Union, protecting civil rights, and redefining federal-state relations. In the years that followed, Nebraskans coped with regional and national economic collapses. Nebraska women struggled for full recognition in the legal profession. Meyer v. Nebraska, a case involving a teacher in a one-room rural Nebraska schoolhouse, changed the course of American constitutional doctrine and remains one of the cornerstones of civil liberties law. And Roscoe Pound, a boy from Lincoln, went on to become one of the nation's great legal philosophers. Nebraska holds a prominent position in the field of Native American legal history, and the state's original inhabitants have been at the center of many significant developments in federal Indian policy. Nebraska Indian legal history is replete with stories of failure and success, heartache and triumph, hardship and hope. These stories are more than a mere record of the past, of treaties broken or trials won -- they are reminders of the ongoing and sometimes tense relations among the many peoples and nations that make up the heartland. Much of Nebraska law reflects mainstream American law, yet Nebraskans also have been open to experiment and innovation. The state revamped the legislative process by establishing the nation's only unicameral legislature and pioneered public employment collective bargaining and dispute resolution through its industrial relations commission and its relaxation of strict separation of powers. These seemingly contradictory trends, however, are but differing expressions of a single underlying principle inscribed in the state's motto: "Equality Before the Law."

Book Entrepreneurship in Nebraska

Download or read book Entrepreneurship in Nebraska written by Eric C. Thompson and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2008-12-02 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nebraska's entrepreneurs play a vital role in the state's economy. This book investigates that role and analyzes the business and economic conditions that affect start-ups in both the short and long run. Using Gallup's extensive survey findings, it reveals the attitudes of small business owners and the general public about topics such as starting a business, entrepreneurship education, economic development, and business transition and succession. Research into business conditions and attitudes in different regions of Nebraska provides an in-depth understanding of the climate for entrepreneurship. In its final chapter, the book describes what actions can be taken to maintain the state's dynamic economy to foster further growth, additional job creation, and expanded wealth and philanthropy. Through its scope and comprehensive analysis, "Entrepreneurship in Nebraska" provides a model that any state can use to advance its own economic climate.
