Book Novel Molecular Targets and Treatments for Gastroesophageal Cancer 2nd edition

Download or read book Novel Molecular Targets and Treatments for Gastroesophageal Cancer 2nd edition written by Bin Li and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-01-10 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gastroesophageal cancer is among the most common malignant diseases worldwide and is associated with high mortality rates, leading to a substantial burden on public health and healthcare systems around the world. Chemotherapeutic drugs have achieved great success in the treatment of esophageal cancer; however, they also bring cytotoxicity to other organs and often have serious side effects. With the development of molecular diagnostics and biomarker discovery, the application of precision medicine has emerged to improve clinical outcomes. New antineoplastic therapy development is a timely topic in light of the recent development of precision medicine. New biotherapies aim to inhibit or regulate different targets, which are thought to be functionally selective or overexpressed in some types of tumors. In particular, progress has been made to understand the molecular biology of gastrointestinal cancer, resulting in the discovery of various molecular targets, such as KRAS, PD-1, PD-L1, EGFR, HER2 and VEGF. Moreover, anticancer agents, such as pembrolizumab, olaparib, trastuzumab, bevacizumab, either as single agents or in combination with conventional chemotherapy, have become part of the standard of care for treatment of advanced gastroesophageal cancer. This Research Topic provides a platform for recent studies on novel molecular targets and treatments for gastroesophageal cancer. Both Original Research articles and Reviews are welcome. Subjects may include but are not limited to: 1) Oncogenes and tumor suppressors; 2) Drug sensitivity/resistance; 3) Tumor metastasis and tumor microenvironment; 4) Biomarker discovery and epigenetic regulation.

This book was released on 2024-01-11 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are designed to revolutionize societies to prepare for the future challenges. However, the practical implementation of such goals in many domains is are yet to be achieved despite of unique essence. Sustainable energy production (aligned with SDG 7), clean water and sanitation (aligned with SDG 6), sustainable waste services (aligned with SDG 11), and mitigating climate change impacts (aligned with SDG 13) have been the prime focus of SDGs. Moreover, much attention is being paid to research and development activities on waste prevention, reduction, recycling, and reuse to achieve responsible consumption and production (aligned with SDG 12). Waste biorefineries have emerged as a sustainable environmental management solution to achieve not only the aforementioned SDGs, but also to accomplish no poverty (aligned with SDG 1) and zero hunger (aligned with SDG 2) and to maintain well-being and good health aligned with (SDG 3) and decent work and economic growth (aligned with SDG 8) worldwide. This is true because integrated waste biorefineries can efficiently and sustainably produce fuels, heat, energy, power, and multiple value-added products and chemicals. It can further facilitate the transition from linear to circular economies and mitigate the major challenges faced, including environmental pollution, climate change, and adverse effects on public health. This Research Topic will focus on different types of waste biorefineries, current status, practical implications, optimization of waste-to-energy technologies, detailed life assessment studies, and future opportunities with a vision to achieve SDGs in the areas of sustainable energy generation, waste management, circular economies, and climate change mitigation. The editorial team of this special issue, consisting of world-renowned scientists including Highly Cited Researchers, welcomes submissions of original research articles, review articles, short communications, industrial and/or country/region case studies that covers the following enlisted topics: • Waste biorefineries (e.g., organic waste biorefinery, agricultural and forestry waste biorefinery, etc.) • Integration of different types of biorefineries • Sustainable development goals • Waste to energy technologies • Energy and resource recovery from biomass and other waste • Renewable and sustainable energy systems • Biomass and waste supply chain • Sustainable waste management systems • Mitigation of environmental pollution and climate change • Life cycle assessment • Sustainable circular and bio-based economies.

Book excerpt: This urgent and eye-opening book makes the case that protecting humanity's future is the central challenge of our time. If all goes well, human history is just beginning. Our species could survive for billions of years - enough time to end disease, poverty, and injustice, and to flourish in ways unimaginable today. But this vast future is at risk. With the advent of nuclear weapons, humanity entered a new age, where we face existential catastrophes - those from which we could never come back. Since then, these dangers have only multiplied, from climate change to engineered pathogens and artificial intelligence. If we do not act fast to reach a place of safety, it will soon be too late. Drawing on over a decade of research, The Precipice explores the cutting-edge science behind the risks we face. It puts them in the context of the greater story of humanity: showing how ending these risks is among the most pressing moral issues of our time. And it points the way forward, to the actions and strategies that can safeguard humanity. An Oxford philosopher committed to putting ideas into action, Toby Ord has advised the US National Intelligence Council, the UK Prime Minister's Office, and the World Bank on the biggest questions facing humanity. In The Precipice, he offers a startling reassessment of human history, the future we are failing to protect, and the steps we must take to ensure that our generation is not the last. "A book that seems made for the present moment." —New Yorker

Book Science and Technology of Terrorism and Counterterrorism Second Edition

Download or read book Science and Technology of Terrorism and Counterterrorism Second Edition written by Mark A. Prelas and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2010-08-10 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditionally, resources on terrorism and counterterrorism tend to focus on the social, behavioral, and legal aspects of the subject, with minimal emphasis on the scientific and technological aspects. Taking into account these practical considerations, the second edition of Science and Technology of Terrorism and Counterterrorism discusses the nature of terrorism and the materials used by terrorists. It describes how intelligence professionals and law enforcement personnel can detect and destroy these materials, and how they can deal with terrorist groups. This volume begins by introducing the shift in analysis of terrorist attacks after September 11, 2001 and summarizes selected case studies. It discusses the origin and nature of terrorism and the factors involved in diplomacy. Covering a broad range of topics, the book examines: Aerosol dispersion of toxic materials Bioterrorism and the manufacture, detection, and delivery of biological agents Agricultural terrorism Nuclear terrorism and nuclear weapons systems, threats, and safeguards Chemical terrorism, including manufacture, detection, delivery, and decontamination Cyber-terrorism Personal protective equipment The role of government at federal, state, and local levels The role of international agencies and their resources, capabilities, and responsibilities The National Infrastructure Protection Plan As terrorist activities increase globally, it is critical that those charged with protecting the public understand the myriad of ways in which terrorists operate. While we cannot predict where, when, and how terrorists will strike, our vigilance in staying abreast of the terrorist threat is the only way to have a fighting chance against those who seek to destroy our world.

Book excerpt: Hugo Grotius (1583-1645) is the most famous humanist scholar of the Dutch Golden Age. He wrote influential works on the laws of war and peace, Dutch history and the unification of the churches. His plea for a freedom of the seas in Mare liberum offered the Dutch East India Company a ready justification for the establishment of a trading empire in the East Indies. As far as his daily duties left him any spare time, he penned confidential, learned and beautifully-written letters. This voluminous correspondence offers a trove of information on Grotius’ life and works, and forms the basis of his newest biography which sketches a life caught in a fierce struggle for peace in Church and State.
