Book 1920 Dips Into The Near Future

Download or read book 1920 Dips Into The Near Future written by John Atkinson Hobson and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2019-10-11 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “1920 - Dips Into The Near Future” is a 1917 work by English economist John Atkinson Hobson. It contains a number of satirical writings that predict what life and the world will be life in 1920, just three years after the first publication of this book. In these short satirical pieces, Hobson attempts to point out some of the hypocrisies of the 'Never-Endian' attitude which betrayed “every cause of liberty at home in a war of liberty” and claimed to “end a war by refusing every opportunity of making peace”. Contents include: “The Aged Service Act”, “Reprisals”, “The Laboratory of War-truth”, “D.O.R.A.”, “The Military Service (Females) Act”, “War-bondage”, “War Aims”, and “The New Jerusalem”. John Atkinson Hobson (1858 – 1940) was an English social scientist and economist most famous for his work on imperialism—which notably had an influence on Vladimir Lenin—as well as his theory of underconsumption. His early work also questioned the classical theory of rent and predicted the Neoclassical "marginal productivity" theory of distribution. Many vintage books such as this are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. We are republishing this volume now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition together with a specially-commissioned new introduction on World War I.

Book Flying Cars for Everyone in the Near Future

Download or read book Flying Cars for Everyone in the Near Future written by A.C. Rogers Jr. and published by America Star Books. This book was released on 2012-08-31 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "As human population continues to increase here on earth, congested streets and highways will abound at a rate well beyond our current plans for solution. Something is drastically needed to relax traffic congestion. An Aircar that con be housed in your garage; can takeoff "quietly" from in front of your house without a runway; and take you to work and back every day is conceptualized herein. A design specification for an Aircar is developed herein by first identifying the impracticalities of everyone having an Aircar for everyday use and then sets forth the technological means for overcoming each of the identified impracticalities. An Aircar design concept is presented based on a design specification. The one great importance of this book is that it identifies large number of applications currently under development, many of which have not been oriented toward any specific application.. Such technologies include nanotube materials, electrogravity propulsion, Lithium Air batteries, "free energy" electrical generators, plasma actuators for boundary layer flow control and noise reduction and electronic guidance and safety control. Thus, the development of the Aircar will bring to the entire aeronautical industry the full development of such relatively "far out" technologies."

Book excerpt: ONE OF BARACK OBAMA’S FAVORITE BOOKS OF THE YEAR “The best science-fiction nonfiction novel I’ve ever read.” —Jonathan Lethem "If I could get policymakers, and citizens, everywhere to read just one book this year, it would be Kim Stanley Robinson’s The Ministry for the Future." —Ezra Klein (Vox) The Ministry for the Future is a masterpiece of the imagination, using fictional eyewitness accounts to tell the story of how climate change will affect us all. Its setting is not a desolate, postapocalyptic world, but a future that is almost upon us. Chosen by Barack Obama as one of his favorite books of the year, this extraordinary novel from visionary science fiction writer Kim Stanley Robinson will change the way you think about the climate crisis. "One hopes that this book is read widely—that Robinson’s audience, already large, grows by an order of magnitude. Because the point of his books is to fire the imagination."―New York Review of Books "If there’s any book that hit me hard this year, it was Kim Stanley Robinson’s The Ministry for the Future, a sweeping epic about climate change and humanity’s efforts to try and turn the tide before it’s too late." ―Polygon (Best of the Year) "Masterly." —New Yorker "[The Ministry for the Future] struck like a mallet hitting a gong, reverberating through the year ... it’s terrifying, unrelenting, but ultimately hopeful. Robinson is the SF writer of my lifetime, and this stands as some of his best work. It’s my book of the year." —Locus "Science-fiction visionary Kim Stanley Robinson makes the case for quantitative easing our way out of planetary doom." ―Bloomberg Green

Book The Singularity Is Nearer

Download or read book The Singularity Is Nearer written by Ray Kurzweil and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2024-06-25 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The noted inventor and futurist’s successor to his landmark book The Singularity Is Near explores how technology will transform the human race in the decades to come Since it was first published in 2005, Ray Kurzweil’s The Singularity Is Near and its vision of an exponential future have spawned a worldwide movement. Kurzweil's predictions about technological advancements have largely come true, with concepts like AI, intelligent machines, and biotechnology now widely familiar to the public. In this entirely new book Ray Kurzweil brings a fresh perspective to advances toward the Singularity—assessing his 1999 prediction that AI will reach human level intelligence by 2029 and examining the exponential growth of technology—that, in the near future, will expand human intelligence a millionfold and change human life forever. Among the topics he discusses are rebuilding the world, atom by atom with devices like nanobots; radical life extension beyond the current age limit of 120; reinventing intelligence by connecting our brains to the cloud; how exponential technologies are propelling innovation forward in all industries and improving all aspects of our well-being such as declining poverty and violence; and the growth of renewable energy and 3-D printing. He also considers the potential perils of biotechnology, nanotechnology, and artificial intelligence, including such topics of current controversy as how AI will impact employment and the safety of autonomous cars, and "After Life" technology, which aims to virtually revive deceased individuals through a combination of their data and DNA. The culmination of six decades of research on artificial intelligence, The Singularity Is Nearer is Ray Kurzweil’s crowning contribution to the story of this science and the revolution that is to come.

Book Portfolio Society

Download or read book Portfolio Society written by Ivan Ascher and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2016-09-02 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A bold extension of Marx's Capital for the twenty-first century: at once a critique of modern finance and of the societies under its spell. As financial markets expand and continue to refashion the world in their own image, the wealth of capitalist societies no longer presents itself, as it did to Karl Marx in the nineteenth century, as a “monstrous collection of commodities.” Instead, it appears as an equally monstrous collection of financial securities, and the critique of political economy must proceed accordingly. But what would it mean to write Capital in the twenty-first century? Are we really to believe that risk, rather than labor, is now regarded as the true fount of economic value? Can it truly be the case that the credit relation—at least in the global North—has replaced the wage relation as the key site of exploitation and political struggle? And finally, if precarity is indeed the name of today's proletarian condition, what possible future does it actually portend, what analysis does it require? Through a series of creative substitutions, in Portfolio Society Ivan Ascherextends Marx's critical project in bold and unexpected ways. Ascher not only explains some of the often mystifying processes of contemporary finance, he also invites us to consider what becomes of capitalism itself in those places where the relation of capital to its own future is now mediated by financial markets. In the end, we may find that much has changed and much has not; relations of domination endure, and mystifications abound, but the devil is in the details, and that is where Ascher directs our attention. At once a critique of modern finance and of the societies under its spell, Portfolio Society succeeds in revealing the potential limits of Capital, while reveling still in its limitless potential.
