Book Echoes of the Past Crafting and Playing Ancient Rim Blown Flutes

Download or read book Echoes of the Past Crafting and Playing Ancient Rim Blown Flutes written by Marwan Hassan and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2024-08-24 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Echoes of the Past. Crafting and Playing Ancient Rim-Blown Flutes" is an in-depth exploration of creating some of the oldest musical instruments in the world. Drawing from over 45 years of experience, the author guides readers through the intricate building processes (including crafting the necessary tools), tuning, and playing rim-blown flutes from various cultures, offering a unique insight into these timeless instruments. The book begins with a detailed examination of the Egyptian Kawala flute, with origins stretching back to prehistoric times. It also provides extensive details on how to build Egyptian Ney flutes, which were first developed by ancient Egyptian craftsmen and are still cherished today. Readers are taken step by step through the techniques and materials required to create these flutes, focusing on the rich traditions and sounds that have captivated musicians for millennia. The journey also discusses the Indonesian Saluang Darek and Saluang Sirompak flutes, which hold a significant place in the country's musical heritage. Readers are guided through the construction of these instruments, uncovering the cultural nuances and craftsmanship behind their enchanting sounds. A particular highlight of the book is the examination of the Native American Pueblo or Anasazi flute. Readers have the opportunity to recreate flutes from the seventh century AD, as displayed in the Arizona State Museum. They learn how to calculate hole positions and revive forgotten music. The book provides an unparalleled guide to bringing the spiritual and cultural importance of these ancient flutes back to life. Throughout the book, more than 150 detailed figures and images accompany the text, offering visual guidance and enhancing the learning experience. This makes the book a unique resource, serving as a practical guide for crafting these instruments and a testament to the enduring legacy of music across cultures and time. By bringing these ancient sounds to life, the book connects readers with a musical tradition that spans 5,000 years, making it an invaluable addition to the library of any musician, historian, or craftsman passionate about the art of flute-making.

Book The Neanderthals Rediscovered How Modern Science Is Rewriting Their Story The Rediscovered Series

Download or read book The Neanderthals Rediscovered How Modern Science Is Rewriting Their Story The Rediscovered Series written by Dimitra Papagianni and published by Thames & Hudson. This book was released on 2013-10-07 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Even-handed, up-to-date, and clearly written. . . . If you want to navigate between the Scylla and Charybdis of Neanderthal controversies, you’ll find no better guide.” —Brian Fagan, author of Cro-Magnon In recent years, the common perception of the Neanderthal has been transformed thanks to new discoveries and paradigm-shattering scientific innovations. It turns out that the Neanderthals’ behavior was surprisingly modern: they buried the dead, cared for the sick, hunted large animals in their prime, harvested seafood, and spoke. Meanwhile, advances in DNA technologies have forced a reassessment of the Neanderthals’ place in our own past. For hundreds of thousands of years, Neanderthals evolved in Europe very much in parallel to the Homo sapiens line evolving in Africa, and, when both species made their first forays into Asia, the Neanderthals may even have had the upper hand. Here, Dimitra Papagianni and Michael A. Morse look at the Neanderthals through the full dramatic arc of their existence—from their evolution in Europe to their expansion to Siberia, their subsequent extinction, and ultimately their revival in popular novels, cartoons, cult movies, and TV commercials.

Book The Prehistory of Music

Download or read book The Prehistory of Music written by Iain Morley and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2013-10-24 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Music is possessed by all human cultures, and archaeological evidence for musical activities pre-dates even the earliest known cave art. Music has been the subject of keen investigation across a great diversity of fields, from neuroscience and psychology to ethnography, archaeology, and its own dedicated field, musicology. Despite the great contributions that these studies have made towards understanding musical behaviours, much remains mysterious about this ubiquitous human phenomenon—not least, its origins. In a ground-breaking study, this volume brings together evidence from these fields, and more, in investigating the evolutionary origins of our musical abilities, the nature of music, and the earliest archaeological evidence for musical activities amongst our ancestors. Seeking to understand the true relationship between our unique musical capabilities and the development of the remarkable social, emotional, and communicative abilities of our species, it will be essential reading for anyone interested in music and human physical and cultural evolution.

Book Sex Drugs and Rock n Roll

Download or read book Sex Drugs and Rock n Roll written by Zoe Cormier and published by Da Capo Press. This book was released on 2015-03-24 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What led scientists to have acrobats copulate inside an MRI machine? Why do wordless patterns of sound send shivers down our spines and tickle ancient parts of our brains? How did a chemist's quest to create a drug to ease the pain of childbirth result in the creation of LSD? And did it change our understanding of the brain forever? From tortoiseshell condoms to superstar athletes on hallucinogens, science writer Zoe Cormier dissects these and other burning questions, amplifying them with insights from some of the world's bravest, cleverest, and downright weirdest scientists. Sex, Drugs, and Rock 'n' Roll explores science at the edge, where scientists ask big, strange questions -- and sometimes experiment on themselves to find answers. It shines a light into the lesser-known corners of scientific research to gain insight into the nature of consciousness, happiness, and humanity. Not to mention our parties. Here are stories of unconventional scientists, innovative inquiries, hedonistic impulses -- and how the renegades of science have illuminated the secrets of our baser impulses.

Book A Modern Theory of Language Evolution

Download or read book A Modern Theory of Language Evolution written by Carl J. Becker and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2004-12 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The discipline of linguistics is a perfect example of the limitations of the modern academy. The combination of social taboos that make certain subject matter unfit for general knowledge and discovery, and the ever-narrowing specialization of scientists leaves us with an intellectual institution that can no longer do anything but apply, repair, and justify the dogma of Victorian Cosmology that is the rule all must follow. Linguistics should be one of the most interesting subjects, considering it is the study of our most valuable and revealing cultural asset, language. However, recent publications from the linguistic department for public consumption have been some of the most trivial and boring intellectual expositions that have ever been put between two covers. Using the entire database of science, we look at the acquisition of language and how it forms our cultural perspective on life, including theories of language evolution. We develop the theory of the evolution of language from song, one of the few suppositions that Charles Darwin actually got right. From this basis we move on to the roots of Proto-Indo-European, which we call Bhear Tongue. Bhear Tongue is essentially the Eurasian language family dimly perceived by one of the greatest linguists of the twentieth century, Joseph Greenberg. From this perspective we can now retell the tribal stories from Iberia to Siberia, showing a common origin and motivation for human science and religion.
