Book Navstar GPS Global Positioning System Accuracy While Surveying Arrays of Deep Ocean Transponders

Download or read book Navstar GPS Global Positioning System Accuracy While Surveying Arrays of Deep Ocean Transponders written by Larry A. Anderson and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents the observed accuracy of the Navstar GPS Global Positioning System when used with acoustic data to geodetically locate arrays of bottom-mounted ocean transponders. Two arrays were to be located, and each was surveyed on several separate occasions. In addition to GPS with dual frequency precise P-code, the arrays were located by using Argo, Syledis, Transit satellites, and by several other tracking methods. Because the array positions have been well determined, the data is now able to reveal the absolute GPS fix error while at sea. For one survey, ground truth information from the Yuma GPS facility, 263 nautical miles (487 km) away, was used to reduce measurement bias. Keywords: Deep ocean transponders; Hydrophone survey.

Book The Potential of the NAVSTAR Global Positioning System for the Corps of Engineers Civil Works

Download or read book The Potential of the NAVSTAR Global Positioning System for the Corps of Engineers Civil Works written by K. D. Robertson and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Department is in the process of deploying a new satellite system for the purpose of navigation and point positioning. While designed primarily for military applications, the system poses great potential for civilian use as well. In particular, the use of GPS in a geodetic mode may yield rapid, accurate survey positions in three dimensions. Thus, in the near future, GPS will become a valuable new tool to the Corps surveyor. Keywords include: NAVSTAR, Global Positioning System, and point positioning.

Download or read book Global Positioning System written by Bernhard Hofmann-Wellenhof and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is dedicated to Dr. Benjamin William Remondi for many reasons. The project of writing a Global Positioning System (GPS) book was con ceived in April 1988 at a GPS meeting in Darmstadt. Dr. Remondi discussed with me the need for an additional GPS textbook and suggested a possible joint effort. In 1989, I was willing to commit myself to such a project. Un fortunately, the timing was less than ideal for Dr. Remondi. Therefore, I decided to start the project with other coauthors. Dr. Remondi agreed and indicated his willingness to be a reviewer. I selected Dr. Herbert Lichtenegger, my colleague from the University of Technology at Graz, Austria, and Dr. James Collins from the United States. In my opinion, the knowledge of the three authors should cover the wide spectrum of GPS. Dr. Lichtenegger is a geodesist with broad experience in both theory and practice. He has specialized his research to geodetic astron omy including orbital theory and geodynamical phenomena. Since 1986, Dr. Lichtenegger's main interest is dedicated to GPS. Dr. Collins retired from the U.S. National Geodetic Survey in 1980, where he was the Deputy Director. For the past ten years, he has been deeply involved in using GPS technology with an emphasis on surveying. Dr. Collins was the founder and president of Geo/Hydro Inc. My own background is theoretically oriented. My first chief, Prof. Dr. Peter Meissl, was an excellent theoretician; and my former chief, Prof. DDDr. Helmut Moritz, fortunately, still is.

Book Use of GPS Global Positioning System for Dynamic Positioning of Hydrographic Survey Platforms

Download or read book Use of GPS Global Positioning System for Dynamic Positioning of Hydrographic Survey Platforms written by Patrick J. Fell and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Navstar Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite-based radio navigation system designed to provide continuous all-weather navigation to appropriately equipped users on a worldwide basis. The NAVSTAR system of navigation satellites may be exploited in several ways to support dynamic positioning of hydrographic survey platforms. Range observations from four satellites provide direct positioning in the World Geodetic system 1984 (WGS 84) terrestrial coordinate frame with an accuracy from 16 meters for the Precise Positioning Service (dual-frequency ranging) to 76 meters for the Standard Positioning Service (single-frequency ranging), spherical error probable. Higher precision is obtainable, especially for near-shore survey applications, using simultaneously measured phase observations acquired at sea and at land-based control points. With this method of positioning, the dynamic path of the survey vessel may be obtained with accuracies better than 1 meter. In addition to these applications, GPS may be used to determine survey vessel attitude and to establish undersea acoustic transponder control. This paper presents a synopsis of actual and anticipated results for each of these hydrographic surveying applications.

The textbook explains in a comprehensive manner the concepts of GPS as well as the latest applications in surveying and navigation. Description of project planning, observation, and data processing is provided for novice GPS users. Special emphasis is placed on the modernization of GPS, covering the new signal structure and improvements in the space and control segment. Furthermore, the augmentation of GPS by satellite-based and ground-based systems leading to future Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) is discussed.
