Book Naval Seafloor Soil Sampling and In place Test Equipment

Download or read book Naval Seafloor Soil Sampling and In place Test Equipment written by K. R. Demars and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Naval Civil Engineering Laboratory (NCEL) has developed a stationary piston soil sampler and vane shear and cone penetrometer apparatus capable of performing to a depth of 10 feet in the seafloor. Both devices are subsystems of DOTIPOS (Deep Ocean Test-In-Place and Observation System). This equipment is used primarily as a research tool to determine the in-situ strength characteristics of seafloor sediments. The information obtained with DOTIPOS improves the Navy's seafloor foundation engineering capability. The results of tests at four seafloor sites to a water depth of 5,600 feet and the evaluation of the two subsystems are presented. The piston soil sampler and the vane shear and cone penetrometer apparatus have operated satisfactorily to a water depth of 5,600 feet. The relationships between in-situ vane shear and cone penetrometer test results from this equipment fall within the range of previous theoretical and experimental results. Laboratory and in-situ vane shear results are in reasonable agreement. The cone penetrometer is a more economical survey tool than the vane shear, but additional work is needed to further define the implications of the test results. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As part of its continuing program to stimulate superior basic research in the marine environment, the Office of Naval Research, Ocean Science and Technology Division, sponsored a series of closed seminar-workshops in 1972-1973. Each seminar focused upon one re search area of marine geology which is relatively new and in need of a critical evaluation and accelerated support. The subjects areas chosen for the seminars were: 1. natural gases in marine sediments and their mode of distribution, 2. nephelometry and the optical properties of ocean waters, 3. physical and engineering properties of deep-sea sediments, and 4. physics of sound in marine sediments. The objectives of each seminar-workshop were to bring into sharper focus the state-of-the-science within each subject area, to effect some degree of coordination among the investigators working within each of these areas and to provide the Ocean Science and Technology Division guidance for national program support. This volume.contains most of the papers presented at the semi nar on the physical and engineering properties of deep-sea sediments. The seminar was held at Airlie House, Airlie, Virginia on April 24- 27, 1973 and was organized and chaired by A. Inderbitzen. The at tendees were invited from among the leading investigators in this field from both the engineering and scientific disciplines. Each attendee was requested to prepare a paper within his area of spe ciality.

Book In situ Strength of Seafloor Soil Determined from Tests on Partially Disturbed Cores

Download or read book In situ Strength of Seafloor Soil Determined from Tests on Partially Disturbed Cores written by Homa J. Lee and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The major obstacle to rational design of seafloor foundations and anchors has been a lack of good quality information on the bottom sediment engineering properties. Considerable engineering property data have been obtained through laboratory testing of core samples, but most of these data are of questionable validity because of sample disturbance factor. To improve the usability and credibility of laboratory test data, an experimental investigation was undertaken to determine the extent of disturbance involved in seafloor soil sampling and handling. In-situ tests were performed and related to comparable laboratory tests. The soils tested were from the Santa Barbara Channel with a terrigenous (land derived) origin. A technique based on earlier work was developed for predicting in-situ shear strength on the basis of laboratory test results. Various disturbance mechanisms including sampling, vibration, long-term nonrefrigerated storage, and water and air expansion were investigated and analyzed quantitatively. Strength reductions varying between 15 and 50 percent were observed to result from these disturbances. The in-situ strength prediction procedure appears to be capable of compensating for all forms of disturbance except for those developing as a result of gas expansion. (Author).

Book Foundation Engineering Handbook

Download or read book Foundation Engineering Handbook written by Hsai-Yang Fang and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 935 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than ten years have passed since the first edition was published. During that period there have been a substantial number of changes in geotechnical engineering, especially in the applications of foundation engineering. As the world population increases, more land is needed and many soil deposits previously deemed unsuitable for residential housing or other construction projects are now being used. Such areas include problematic soil regions, mining subsidence areas, and sanitary landfills. To overcome the problems associated with these natural or man-made soil deposits, new and improved methods of analysis, design, and implementation are needed in foundation construction. As society develops and living standards rise, tall buildings, transportation facilities, and industrial complexes are increasingly being built. Because of the heavy design loads and the complicated environments, the traditional design concepts, construction materials, methods, and equipment also need improvement. Further, recent energy and material shortages have caused additional burdens on the engineering profession and brought about the need to seek alternative or cost-saving methods for foundation design and construction.
