Many col ouies, indeed, acquired during that period were sur rendered after conquest, a doubtful policy which may perhaps never be repeated. The sailing period which began about 1571 at the time of the battle of Lepanto, and during which all this great work was accomplished, came gradually to its death about the middle of the nineteenth century, when it was sup planted by steam power. Thus the nineteenth century saw one of those revolutions in the methods of naval warfare which mark the beginning of a new epoch. It seemed as if the magic wand of science had been waved over the face of the waters, transforming all that moved thereon into new and more powerful shapes. Navies were changed from wood to steel; from unarmoured to armoured, the motive power from sails to steam, and the guns from muzzle to breech-loading. The changes of tactics and methods of naval war fare produced by the introduction Of steam carry us back, singularly enough, in many respects to the starting points of all navies, the Galley Period. This period goes back, as far as we have any records, to 1400 B. C. And lasted to about 1571 and was then gradually succeeded by the Sail Period. Book excerpt: From the beginning to the mid-seventeenth century, several navies, especially those in the Netherlands and England, began to use new combat techniques. Previously, as we have noted, battles were often fought by large fleets of ships approaching and boarding enemy ships as opportunities presented themselves. The evolution of naval cannons during the first half of the 17th century soon led to the conclusion that the fleet needed to try to fight in a single line to make the most of its firepower, without one ship getting in the way of the other. The tactic was used by both sides in the Anglo-Dutch wars and was codified in instructions for combat, which formed the basis of the entire tactical system of the 17th and 18th centuries in the naval war. The search for the height advantage given by the bow and stern castles has been reduced, now that approach combat was less essential. The need for maneuver in battle made the castles weight and center of gravity a disadvantage. Then they shrunk, making the ship of the line lighter and more maneuverable than its ancestors, with the same firepower. As an additional consequence, the hull itself got bigger, allowing the size and number of cannons to also increase.

Book excerpt: In early modern Britain, there was an argument that war at sea, especially war in Spanish America, was an ideal means of warfare, offering the prospect of rich gains at relatively little cost whilst inflicting considerable damage on enemy financial resources. This book examines that argument, tracing its origin to the glorious memory of Elizabethan maritime war, discussing its supposed economic advantages, and investigating its influence on British politics and naval policy during the War of the Spanish Succession (1702-13) and after. The book reveals that the alleged economic advantages of war at sea were crucial in attracting the support of politicians of different political stances. It shows how supporters of war at sea, both in the government as well as in the opposition, tried to implement pro-maritime war policy by naval operations, colonial expeditions and by legislation, and how their attempts were often frustrated by diplomatic considerations, the incapacity of naval administration, and by conflicting interests between different groups connected to the West Indian colonies and Spanish American trade. It demonstrates how, after the War of the Spanish Succession, arguments for active colonial maritime war continued to be central to political conflict, notably in the opposition propaganda campaigns against the Walpole ministry, culminating in the War of Jenkins's Ear against Spain in 1739. The book also includes material on the South Sea Company, showing how the foundation of this company, later the subject of the notorious 'Bubble', was a logical part of British strategy. Shinsuke Satsuma completed his doctorate in maritime history at the University of Exeter.
