Download or read book Natures in Translation written by Alan Bewell and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2017-01-02 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the dynamics of British colonialism and the enormous ecological transformations that took place through the mobilization and globalized management of natures. For many critics, Romanticism is synonymous with nature writing, for representations of the natural world appear during this period with a freshness, concreteness, depth, and intensity that have rarely been equaled. Why did nature matter so much to writers of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries? And how did it play such an important role in their understanding of themselves and the world? In Natures in Translation, Alan Bewell argues that there is no Nature in the singular, only natures that have undergone transformation through time and across space. He examines how writers—as disparate as Erasmus and Charles Darwin, Joseph Banks, Gilbert White, William Bartram, William Wordsworth, John Clare, and Mary Shelley—understood a world in which natures were traveling and resettling the globe like never before. Bewell presents British natural history as a translational activity aimed at globalizing local natures by making them mobile, exchangeable, comparable, and representable. Bewell explores how colonial writers, in the period leading up to the formulation of evolutionary theory, responded to a world in which new natures were coming into being while others disappeared. For some of these writers, colonial natural history held the promise of ushering in a “cosmopolitan” nature in which every species, through trade and exchange, might become a true “citizen of the world.” Others struggled with the question of how to live after the natures they depended upon were gone. Ultimately, Natures in Translation demonstrates that—far from being separate from the dominant concerns of British imperial culture—nature was integrally bound up with the business of empire.

Download or read book Everybody s Guide to Nature Cure written by Harry Benjamin and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2013-03-05 with total page 597 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: That there is a very great necessity for a popularly written book on Natural Healing—or Nature Cure, as it is called—in this disease–ridden world of ours has been only too obvious to the writer for several years. The present volume may be taken, therefore, as his attempt to meet this long-felt need. For everyone who knows anything about Nature Cure, and has realised through personal experience what its methods of treatment can do for suffering humanity, there are tens of thousands still completely ignorant as to its very existence in the world of healing, and are, as a consequence, still gripped fast within the clutches of orthodox belief and faith in the “absoluteness” and “sanctity” of Medical Science, even though in many instances they have had ample evidence of its inability to help them in their own particular cases. In the course of his daily experience as a Naturopath—or practitioner of Nature Cure—the writer is being brought continually into contact with scores of people, drawn from every rank of society, who had previously spent practically all their time and money going from doctor to doctor, specialist to specialist, hospital to hospital, in the vain hope of being cured of the diseases from which they had been suffering, only to find these same diseases becoming worse, not better, at medical hands. Indeed, in many instances, they had at last been given up as “incurable,” doomed to a life of chronic invalidism, because of the inability of the men whom the nation instinctively regards as its saviours from disease to do anything for them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Norman Kretzmann expounds and criticizes Aquinas's theology of creation, which is natural' (or philosophical) in that Aquinas developed it without depending on the data of Scripture. Because of the special importance of intellective creatures like us, Aquinas's account of the divine origin and organization of the universe includes essential ingredients of his philosophy of mind. The Metaphysics of Creation is a continuation of the project Kretzmann began inThe Metaphysics of Theism; as before, he not only explains Aquinas's natural theology, but advocates it as the best available to us.
Download or read book Tarot Your Everyday Guide written by Janina Renee and published by Llewellyn Worldwide. This book was released on 2000 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every day you make choices. Some are big, some are small-but all will affect the course of your future. The good news is that you don't have to do it alone-the tarot can give you advice when you need it most! Reading the tarot for advice requires a different approach than reading for prediction. Tarot: Your Everyday Guide presents a new method of tarot interpretation. You'll learn how to use the tarot to help you make an informed decision and determine a course of action for just about any life situation. For example, in an advice reading the Two of Wands could mean you should set up your own challenges to work out goals, define issues, and work out compromises. If the King of Cups comes up in an advice reading, it means you must give encouragement, acknowledge the accomplishments of others, give rewards, and let others enjoy the limelight. Alternatively, it could mean you need to seek a mentor who has these qualities. The position of a given card within a spread, and the cards before and after it, will clarify the cards' advice for you. You can even use advice readings to augment traditional divination. If a divinatory spread shows trouble ahead, consult the cards for advice on how to avoid the situation or lessen its impact. Whether you're an experienced tarot reader or have never even shuffled the cards before, this unique and practical book will open new doors of understanding and help you integrate the rich symbolism of the tarot into your daily life. Winner of the 2001 Coalition of Visionary Resources (COVR) Award for best Self-help Book

Download or read book Contested Natures written by Phil Macnaghten and published by SAGE. This book was released on 1998-03-06 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Demonstrating that all notions of nature are inextricably entangled in different forms of social life, the text elaborates the many ways in which the apparently natural world has been produced from within particular social practices. These are analyzed in terms of different senses, different times and the production of distinct spaces, including the local, the national and the global. The authors emphasize the importance of cultural understandings of the physical world, highlighting the ways in which these have been routinely misunderstood by academic and policy discourses. They show that popular conceptions of, and attitudes to, nature are often contradictory and that there are no simple ways of prevailing upon people to `save the environment′.
