Book Invitations to an Icy Land Textual Constructions for Nature Tourism in John Burroughs and John Muir s Narratives of Alaska and the Far North

Download or read book Invitations to an Icy Land Textual Constructions for Nature Tourism in John Burroughs and John Muir s Narratives of Alaska and the Far North written by Patrick David Wasley and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "John Burroughs and John Muir recorded their thoughts, observations and experiences in narratives of their travels to Alaska and the Far North. This dissertation explores these texts and the strategies and methods by which they encourage readers to visit Alaska to observe its natural scenery and Native cultures. Burroughs' and Muir's narratives do more than describe the people and places of Alaska: they demonstrate the physical, intellectual, aesthetic and spiritual benefits of Alaskan travel. Chapter One contains a discussion of ecocritical and tourism theories. This overview establishes a theoretical context from which to examine Burroughs' and Muir's Alaska texts and their promotion of nature tourism. Chapter Two investigates John Muir's textual constructions for nature tourism in 'Travels in Alaska.' The first part of this chapter examines how Muir's rhetorical strategies, including his subversion of established religious conventions, promote southeast Alaska as an ideal destination for those seeking spiritual renewal in wilderness. The second part of this chapter analyzes Muir's views and opinions of southeast Alaska Indians in relation to ethnic tourism. The final section critiques Muir's role as an adventure tourist in 'Stickeen' and his promulgation of the restorative effects of strenuous travel in the third part of 'Travels in Alaska.' Chapter Three explores John Burroughs' 'Narrative of the Expedition, ' published in volume one of the 'Harriman Alaska Expedition.' Burroughs' account reveals how experiential factors, as well as cultural constructs and metaphors, influence his perception of Alaska and the Far North. Chapter Four examines 'The Cruise of the Corwin' as a late-nineteenth-century model for political activism by nature tourists. From an ecocritical perspective, Muir's work functions as a resource that can inspire and empower contemporary nature tourists who support Alaskan wildlife conservation and the preservation of Native cultures. Chapter Five compares and contrasts Burroughs' and Muir's Alaska narratives as they relate to nature tourism. The conclusion discusses the ethos of nature travel and how contemporary ecotourists can contribute to the preservation of Alaskan parks, forests and wilderness areas"--Leaves iv-v.

Book Social Conditions and Trends in Southeast Alaska

Download or read book Social Conditions and Trends in Southeast Alaska written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1997, scientists at the Pacific Northwest Research Station initiated several social science studies in response to information gaps identified while developing the Tongass Land Management Plan. Results presented here summarize findings from studies of demographic trends and tourism trends in the region based on data available through 2002. Demographic trends suggest that despite having many unique geographic, climatic, and physical characteristics, southeast Alaska exhibits many social conditions and trends similar to those statewide, as well as in the greater United States and nonmetropolitan United States. Much variation exists at the community level, however, when measuring change in population and income in southeast Alaska. In the last decade, tourism has been one of the fastest growing components of Alaskas economy and an important source of export-based income. Natural resource management and use in Alaska will affect and will be affected by trends in tourism growth and activities.

Book Sociocultural Effects of Tourism in Hoonah Alaska

Download or read book Sociocultural Effects of Tourism in Hoonah Alaska written by United States Department of Agriculture and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report examines the growth and development of the tourism industry in Hoonah, Alaska, and its effects on community life and resource use. The report describes the gradual development of tourism in Hoonah and presents resident perceptions of tourism's effect on the natural and social environment. A multisited ethnographic approach was used featuring indepth, open-ended interviews with local residents, tourism providers, business owners, and government officials. Data were analyzed using Ethnograph, a software program used to assist in coding data based on prominent themes. Results indicate that tourism has brought changes to the lives of Hoonah residents, particularly those relying on natural resources for everyday survival. Expansion of nature-based tourism in the area surrounding Hoonah resulted in conflicts between resource users. The growth of the charter fishing fleet led to competition with commercial fishers. Nature tour operators using remote recreation sites experienced conflicts with local hunters and fishers as well as other commercial guides. The development of a cruise ship destination on private land outside of Hoonah led to shifts in use of this historic site by local residents as well as in use of other private lands used for subsistence. Findings may enable Forest Service planners to identify factors involved in the relation between tourism growth and community well-being. It also may assist small southeast Alaska communities in decisionmaking related to tourism development.

Book Nature based Tourism in Peripheral Areas

Download or read book Nature based Tourism in Peripheral Areas written by Colin Michael Hall and published by Channel View Publications. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nature-based Tourism in Peripheral Areas provides a comprehensive examination of this form of tourism development as it occurs within alpine, forest, sub-polar, island, coastal and marine environments. This book goes beyond much of the debate surrounding ecotourism and the impacts of tourism in vulnerable environments to place nature-based tourism in a wider regional context, particularly when for many peripheral regions tourism remains one of the key opportunities for economic development. Therefore, a central theme that is present throughout many of the chapters is the role that nature-based tourism can play as the catalyst for larger regional development of regions. The book will serve as essential reading to senior undergraduate and postgraduate students taking courses in tourism and related degrees where the major focus is on tourism that occurs within peripheral regions. It will also serve as a key reference to researchers and professionals interested in the role of tourism as a regional development tool.

Book North Pacific Temperate Rainforests

Download or read book North Pacific Temperate Rainforests written by Gordon Orians and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2016-06-01 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The North Pacific temperate rainforest, stretching from southern Alaska to northern California, is the largest temperate rainforest on earth. This book provides a multidisciplinary overview of key issues important for the management and conservation of the northern portion of this rainforest, located in northern British Columbia and southeastern Alaska. This region encompasses thousands of islands and millions of acres of relatively pristine rainforest, providing an opportunity to compare the ecological functioning of a largely intact forest ecosystem with the highly modified ecosystems that typify most of the world's temperate zone. The book examines the basic processes that drive the dynamic behavior of such ecosystems and considers how managers can use that knowledge to sustainably manage the rainforest and balance ecosystem integrity with human use. Together, the contributors offer a broad understanding of the challenges and opportunities faced by scientists, managers, and conservationists in the northern portion of the North Pacific rainforest that will be of interest to conservation practitioners seeking to balance economic sustainability and biodiversity conservation across the globe.

Book Evolving Approaches to Managing Marine Recreational Fisheries

Download or read book Evolving Approaches to Managing Marine Recreational Fisheries written by Donald Leal and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2009 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Increasing coastal populations, rising recreational demand, and growing conflicts with other users are adding to the challenge of managing marine recreational fisheries today. Traditional regulations - such as daily bag limits and seasonal closures - are often not enough to control fishing impacts and they tend to generate greater discontent and lower economic benefits in the angling community as they become more restrictive. This volume is the first to examine management approaches that promise to better control fishing, generate more information on fishing impacts, and give anglers more freedom to enjoy their sport."--BOOK JACKET.
