Book Collective Action for Grazing Land Management in Mixed Crop livestock Systems in the Highlands of Northern Ethiopia

Download or read book Collective Action for Grazing Land Management in Mixed Crop livestock Systems in the Highlands of Northern Ethiopia written by Berhanu Gebremedhin and published by ILRI (aka ILCA and ILRAD). This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Communal grazing lands are important sources of feed in developing countries. The uncontrolled and free grazing system prevalent in many developing countries has caused sever degradation of the grazing lands. Several alternative management options have been recommended to solve the degradation of common property resources, including state ownership, imposition and enforcement of use rules and regulations by external organisations such as the government, private ownership and community resource management. This paper examines the nature and determinants of collective action for grazing land management in the highlands of Tigray, northern Ethiopia.

Book Food Security Effects of Intensified Dairying

Download or read book Food Security Effects of Intensified Dairying written by F. K. Tangka and published by ILRI (aka ILCA and ILRAD). This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the food security and marketed surplus effects of intensified dairying in a peri-urban area of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where a market-oriented dairy production (MODP) system has been introduced for smallholders. The system involved the introduction of crossbred cows and the utilisation of complementary feed and management technologies for increased dairy production. In this system, increased milk production is treated as a commercial product. Data have also been collected for a group of farmers using traditional technology and are used for comparison.

Book Productivity Growth catching up and Trade in Livestock Products

Download or read book Productivity Growth catching up and Trade in Livestock Products written by and published by ILRI (aka ILCA and ILRAD). This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document starts with a discussion on the scope for improvements in livestock technology and measuring aggregate productivity. It then looks into productivity growth, 'catching up' and technical change and productivity growth and decomposition for 1961-97. It also examines productivity forecasts with reference to catching-up and the logistic function and technical change-estimation of the frontier and forecasting. It also summarises for trade: projections to 2005 including trade model and database and macro-economic projections. The paper places particular emphasis on East Asian countries, and especially China.

Book The Emergence of Land Markets in Africa

Download or read book The Emergence of Land Markets in Africa written by Stein Holden and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-09-30 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first systematic attempt to address emerging land markets and their implications for poverty, equity, and efficiency across a number of African countries. The high incidence of poverty and the need for increased agricultural productivity remain acute in rural areas of sub-Saharan Africa, where a lack of secure land rights and a growing scarcity of land relative to the size of the population are becoming increasingly critical issues. Indeed, land issues in the region are high on the international policy agenda. Yet our knowledge about land tenure security and other rural factor markets (such as labor, oxen, manure, purchased inputs, and credit) is far from adequate to formulate sensible policies. The case studies in the book show that, while land markets and especially informal markets have been rapidly emerging in densely populated parts of Africa - and have generally been to the benefit of the poor--their functions remain imperfect. This is due to policy-induced tenure insecurity and the fragmentation of agricultural land. Applying rigorous quantitative analyses, the book provides a basis for taking into account the role of land markets in national land policies. All too often, the authors argue, land policies have been extreme, either prohibiting all land transactions or giving unrestricted freehold rights to a small elite at the expense of the poor. From the long experience in Asia, it is known that such policies are detrimental to both production efficiency and equity of land use. The authors argue that future policies in Africa should work with the markets. Regulations should be imposed only with careful testing that they are having the intended effects. The Emergence of Land Markets in Africa is a resource for teaching in developed and developing countries, as it provides both comprehensive reviews of the literature and detailed case studies. It is intended to facilitate the dialogue between researchers and policymakers, as well as inspire researchers to go further in their investigations and build an even stronger basis for good policies. The Emergence of Land Markets in Africa is the first publication in the new Environment for Development (EfD) book series. EfD books focus on research and applications in environmental and natural resource economics as they are relevant to poverty reduction and environmental problems in developing countries. The EfD book series is part of the EfD initiative. (www.environmentfordevelopment.org)

Book Measuring Productivity in African Agriculture

Download or read book Measuring Productivity in African Agriculture written by Simeon Ehui and published by ILRI (aka ILCA and ILRAD). This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper argues that partial productivity measures are inappropriate and at times misleading for assessing the performance of agricultural production technologies and systems. This is especially true where substantial changes in resource stock and flows accompany the production process. Superlative-index based total factor productivity measures are a more appropriate technique to compare production efficiency and sustainability of alternative systems. Mathematical formulations of intertemporal and interspatial total factor productivity measures with and without considering changes in resource stock and flows are shown. Then three case studies from sub-Saharan Africa in which this approach was applied are reviewed. These studies show that total factor productivity measures are biased if changes in resource stock and flows are not appropriately accounted for in intertemporal comparisons, and differences in input intensity are not accounted for in interspatial comparisons.
