Book excerpt: Callie Gardner's debut collection Naturally it is not: a poem in four letters is a remarkable work written between the Spring Equinox of 2016 and the Spring Equinox of 2017. It is a work that moves between form, part lyric, part manifesto, part essay. Gardner's poetry here is a truly unique blend of avant-garde rhetoric, utopian politics, and elemental alchemy. A timely work that engages anew with 'the natural' and 'the cultural' in an era marked by the increasing irrelevance of the four-season cycle of the year under climate change.

Book Naturally Reductive Metrics and Einstein Metrics on Compact Lie Groups

Download or read book Naturally Reductive Metrics and Einstein Metrics on Compact Lie Groups written by J. E. D'Atri and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1979 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first part of this paper constructs a class of naturally reductive metrics on compact Lie groups and shows that all naturally reductive left invariant metrics are of this type if the group is simple. The second part analyzes the question of when these metrics are Einstein and gives many new examples. In doing this, certain facts are established about the ratios of the Killing forms of a Lie algebra and a subalgebra. Finally, some results are obtained for noncompact groups and more general compact homogeneous spaces.

Book Naturally Produced Organohalogens

Download or read book Naturally Produced Organohalogens written by Anders Grimvall and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1995-05-31 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Should the production and use of chlorine and all chlorinated organic compounds be halted, in view of their adverse effects on the environment and human health? Those in favour argue that certain chlorinated compounds (PCBs, DDT, CFCs, etc.) have large negative environmental effects. The use of chlorine in disinfectants leads to the production of chloroform, while bulk products (PVC) contribute to the production of chlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans when they are burned. Those against argue that chlorine and many chlorinated compounds are essential in the control of human health (the prevention of disease transmitted through drinking water that has not been disinfected), and that chlorinated compounds are indispensable intermediates in many production processes, representing a vast economic value. But such discussions often ignore the fact that Nature contributes significantly to the production of chlorinated organic compounds. More than 1000 such compounds are known, and their contribution to the biogeochemical cycling of chlorine is underestimated. Chlorine is organically bound in large quantities to humic materials, and natural production mechanisms are known for low molecular weight compounds (methyl chloride, chloroform, chlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans). The role of these compounds in the environment is largely unknown. Naturally-Produced Organohalogens gives a complete overview of the present state of knowledge on the subject, giving a much needed balance to the argument sketched out above.

Book Nothing Natural Is Shameful

    Book Details:
  • Author : Joan Cadden
  • Publisher : University of Pennsylvania Press
  • Release : 2013-09-17
  • ISBN : 0812208587
  • Pages : 336 pages

Download or read book Nothing Natural Is Shameful written by Joan Cadden and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2013-09-17 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his Problemata, Aristotle provided medieval thinkers with the occasion to inquire into the natural causes of the sexual desires of men to act upon or be acted upon by other men, thus bringing human sexuality into the purview of natural philosophers, whose aim it was to explain the causes of objects and events in nature. With this philosophical justification, some late medieval intellectuals asked whether such dispositions might arise from anatomy or from the psychological processes of habit formation. As the fourteenth-century philosopher Walter Burley observed, "Nothing natural is shameful." The authors, scribes, and readers willing to "contemplate base things" never argued that they were not vile, but most did share the conviction that they could be explained. From the evidence that has survived in manuscripts of and related to the Problemata, two narratives emerge: a chronicle of the earnest attempts of medieval medical theorists and natural philosophers to understand the cause of homosexual desires and pleasures in terms of natural processes, and an ongoing debate as to whether the sciences were equipped or permitted to deal with such subjects at all. Mining hundreds of texts and deciphering commentaries, indices, abbreviations, and marginalia, Joan Cadden shows how European scholars deployed a standard set of philosophical tools and a variety of rhetorical strategies to produce scientific approaches to sodomy.

Book Naturally Human Supernaturally God

Download or read book Naturally Human Supernaturally God written by Adam G. Cooper and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2014-05-01 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Naturally Human, Supernaturally God seeks to open a small window upon an interesting case of theological convergence between three of the most important theologians of the pre-Conciliar period of Catholic theology, Réginald Garrigou-Lagrange O.P., Karl Rahner S.J., and Henri de Lubac S.J., each of whom played a vital role in the Second Vatican Council. The differences between these three figures sometimes seem to run so deep as to defy resolution. Yet Cooper argues they were strangely united in a shared conviction: today’s church urgently needs to renew its acquaintance with an ancient Christian theme, the doctrine of deification.
