Book Restoration of Ponderosa Pine Forests to Presettlement Conditions

Download or read book Restoration of Ponderosa Pine Forests to Presettlement Conditions written by Peter Friederici and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Working Paper is one of a series that describes the planning and implementation of restoration treatments in southwestern ponderosa pine forests. In this paper the treatment type is designed to emulate the forest structure prevalent before the landscape-level disturbances that followed Euro-American settlement. It represents the best scientifically based knowledge currently available about treatment types and effects. But this Working Paper is not a prescription. Restoration decisions need to be made with close attention to local conditions there is no one size fits all approach, and specific prescriptions must be determined according to project objectives. Use this publication as an aid in making informed decisions about how to restore more natural conditions, and greater health, to the southwestern ponderosa pine forests.

Book Management of Ponderosa Pine in the Southwest as Developed by Research and Experimental Practice

Download or read book Management of Ponderosa Pine in the Southwest as Developed by Research and Experimental Practice written by Gustaf Adolph Pearson and published by . This book was released on 1950 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) is the most widely distributed conifer in North America, and one of the most valuable. Commercial stands of the species are found in all of the 15 States which lie wholly or in part west of the 102d merinian, and in all but one it rank among the most important lumber producers. In the Southwest, ponderosa pine is of particular importance since this one species makes up 88 percent of the standing saw-timber volume in the two States of Arizona and New Mexico.

Book Natural Regeneration in Ponderosa Pine Forests of Western Montana Classic Reprint

Download or read book Natural Regeneration in Ponderosa Pine Forests of Western Montana Classic Reprint written by Raymond C. Shearer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-17 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Natural Regeneration in Ponderosa Pine Forests of Western Montana Following harvest cutting, natural regeneration of ponderosa pine (pinus ponderosa Laws.) in western Montana usually is uncertain. Therefore, forest managers frequently rely on planting to promptly regenerate ponderosa pine and prevent future gaps in volume production. When the forester decides to restock an area by natural regeneration, he must effectively manipulate the factors under his control that influence seedling establishment. Good ponderosa pine seed crops occur at irregular intervals (usda Forest Service thus, timing of site preparation to coincide with seed production is a critical requirement for successful natural regeneration. Once cones are initiated, it is important to understand the factors influencing their survival. In addition, stimula tion of cone production by girdling or release of seed trees would be a useful tool if ponderosa pine responds to either of these treatments. Even when a sufficient seed crop is produced, the success of natural regeneration is further influenced by: (l) dissemination to a favorable seedbed; (2) seed loss to biotic agents; (3) germination of the remaining seed; and (4) survival of germinated seedlings.
