Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New Natural Theology: Based Upon the Doctrine of Evolution Dear Dr. Sanday, My attention to the subject of Natural Theology has been chiefly due to the encouragement I received from you, when many years ago, after a sermon preached in the Chapel of Bishop Hatfield's Hall, you expressed a desire to hear more from me on the subject of Darwinism in relation to Theology. And the unfailing sympathy and kindness you have shown towards me throughout the years in which, amid many distractions, this work has slowly grown and reached completion - in how imperfect a form I am only too conscious - moves me to ask you to permit your name to be associated with it, and to accept it from me as an expression of my gratitude. I have also to thank you, and Dr. Robertson, your successor at Durham, for the cheerful readiness with which, under the pressure of other engagements, you undertook to read the proof sheets; and for the many valuable suggestions which you and Dr. Robertson have made. Book The Natural Theology of Evolution Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Natural Theology of Evolution Classic Reprint written by J. N. Shearman and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-09 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Natural Theology of Evolution Most persons who are disposed to be religious find it an easy thing to see the hand of God in the works of nature. To them it is pleasant and profitable to contemplate the world as Gods handiwork, and they are disposed to offer the marks of design which it shows as a convincing proof of His existence. The attempt to present this proof in a clear and orderly way has given rise to Natural Theology, a study which, until quite recently, was in high repute and esteem. It attained, perhaps, to its maximum of influence with the publication of Paley's Natural Theology, a remarkable work which put the argument from design in the plainest and clearest terms, and which was everywhere accepted as conclusive. It was accompanied and followed by many other works from which we may learn how highly Natural Theology was esteemed and how widely it was studied; of these the Bridgwater Treatises are, perhaps, the most famous. But this era of exceptional triumph and brilliancy did not last long. It may be said to have come to an end with the publication on the 24th of November, 1859, of Darwin's Origin of Species. As that book became well known the influence of Natural Theology declined. It was felt that the whole argument had lost its force, and that the appearance of plan and contrivance in Nature was fully and satisfactorily accounted for without any necessity for attributing it to conscious design. Book The Natural Theology of Natural Beauty Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Natural Theology of Natural Beauty Classic Reprint written by Richard St. John Tyrwhitt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-20 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Natural Theology of Natural Beauty BY the title of this book the author wishes to assert that there is an argument derivable from the appearances of external Nature, parallel with that from internal structure or mechanism set forth by Paley. Both point to a benevolent Creator: the latter showing that His purposes are favourable to our natural life; the former indicating His further purpose of exalting our thoughts or spiritual life. We find the world adapted to our life and comfort, and have a right to infer that a Living Creatorl made it, and means us well in it. Then we find that, while providing for our physical life, Nature or the external world appeals through our senses to our thoughts and emotions. Our inference is, that that also is a portion of His contrivance for us, by which He means to affect our thoughts con cerning Him, or, in other words, to appeal to us. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Natural Theology It follows from what we have said that in the Scholastic philosophy Natural Theology is no um essential adjunct, no mere afterthought, but a substantive and vital part of the system, without which it would be radically incomplete. It claims to establish from assured first principles the exist ence of'a Supreme Being, distinct from the finite and mutable things of experience. It maintains, further, that though the limitations of the human intellect render all our knowledge of Him inade quate, we are not wholly ignorant of His nature. There are certain attributes which can be affirmed of Him with certainty, though they are His in a manner more 'perfect than any which we can imagine. Above all, He is' intelligent and free, and therefore possessed of personality. In Him it finds the source and origin of all finite beings, and the final cause in view of which such beings exist. But the new scientific doctrine, so far as it can be said to have established itself in the creed of Naturalists of highest repute, has the effect, I am persuaded, to fortify rather than to weaken the argument of design.
