Book The Natural Organic Colouring Matters Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Natural Organic Colouring Matters Classic Reprint written by Arthur George Perkin and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 680 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Natural Organic Colouring Matters During the last four or five decades the Applications of Chemistry have experienced an extraordinary development, and there is scarcely an industry that has not benefited, directly or indirectly, from this expansion. Indeed, the Science trenches in greater or less degree upon all departments of human activity. Practically every division of Natural Science has now been linked up with it in the common service of mankind. So ceaseless and rapid is this expansion that the recondite knowledge of one generation becomes a part of the technology of the next. Thus the conceptions of chemical dynamics of one decade become translated into the current practice of its successor; the doctrines concerning chemical structure and constitution of one period form the basis of large-scale synthetical processes of another; an obscure phenomenon like Catalysis is found to be capable of widespread application in manufacturing operations of the most diverse character. This series of Monographs will afford illustrations of these and similar facts, and incidentally indicate their bearing on the trend of industrial chemistry in the near future. They will serve to show how fundamental and essential is the relation of principle to practice. They will afford examples of the application of recent knowledge to modern manufacturing procedure. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bulletin of the Imperial Institute, Vol. 16: A Quarterly Record of Progress in Tropical Agriculture and Industries and the Commercial Utilisation of the Natural Resources of the Dominions, Colonies and India The Imperial Institute was erected at South Kensington as the National Memorial of the Jubilee of Queen Victoria, by whom it was opened in May 1893. The principal object of the Institute is to promote the utilisation of the commercial and industrial resources of the Empire: (i) by arranging comprehensive exhibitions of natural products, especially of the Dominions, Colonies and India; and (ii) by providing for their investigation, and for the collection and dissemination of scientific, technical and commercial information relating to raw materials. Until the end of 1902 the Imperial Institute was managed by a Governing Body, of which H.R.H. the Prince of Wales (afterwards King Edward Vii.) was President, and an Executive Council, including representatives of the Indian Empire and of all the British Colonies and Dependencies. In 1900 the building became the property of H.M. Government, by whom the western portion and galleries were leased to the Governing Body of the Imperial Institute, the greater part of the eastern and central portions being assigned, subject to rights of usage, for occupation by the University of London. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shortleaf Pine, Its Economic Importance and Forest Management Shortleaf pine is only moderately durable in contact with the soil. The presence of a large amount of resin, as in lightwood, is'commonly thought to increase materially the natural durability of the wood. Sapwood is much less durable than heartwood; it can not ordinarily be expected to last over two or three years, while good heartwood may last seven or eight. Years. When not in contact with the soil or under conditions particularly conducive to decay, the wood has given good satisfaction.
