Book excerpt: This work presents a definitive interpretation of the current status of and future trends in natural products—a dynamic field at the intersection of chemistry and biology concerned with isolation, identification, structure elucidation, and chemical characteristics of naturally occurring compounds such as pheromones, carbohydrates, nucleic acids, and enzymes. With more than 1,800 color figures, Comprehensive Natural Products II features 100% new material and complements rather than replaces the original work (©1999). Reviews the accumulated efforts of chemical and biological research to understand living organisms and their distinctive effects on health and medicine Stimulates new ideas among the established natural products research community—which includes chemists, biochemists, biologists, botanists, and pharmacologists Informs and inspires students and newcomers to the field with accessible content in a range of delivery formats Includes 100% new content, with more than 6,000 figures (1/3 of these in color) and 40,000 references to the primary literature, for a thorough examination of the field Highlights new research and innovations concerning living organisms and their distinctive role in our understanding and improvement of human health, genomics, ecology/environment, and more Adds to the rich body of work that is the first edition, which will be available for the first time in a convenient online format giving researchers complete access to authoritative Natural Products content

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural product chemistry has undergone an explosive growth during the latter half of the current century. This has been brought about by a number of factors. One of these has been the growing number of sub stances from natural sources which display interesting pharmacological activities. These include antibiotics, anti-tumor agents, immunostimu lants, drugs affecting the cardiovascular and central nervous systems, analgesics etc. Another factor has been the improvements made in the technology of isolation processes which includes the development of such techniques as high pressure liquid chromatography which has al lowed the rapid isolation of substances which were previously diffi cult to obtain by classical procedures. The most important factor has been the development of new spectrosopic techniques which have opened up whole new vistas in this exciting field. Prominent in these advan ces has been the advent of powerful superconducting magnets with very stable magnetic fields, and pulse NMR in which the duration, direction and phases of pulses can be accurately controlled by means of mini computers. These have heralded the advent of two-dimensional NMR spec troscopy which has now come to be routinely employed in unravelling complex structures. No less important, though somewhat less dramatic, have been the advances made in the field of mass spectroscopy where new ionization techniques such as positive and negative fast atom bom bardment, field desorption, chemical ionization etc. have allowed the mass spectra of larger non-volatile substances to be recorded. The field of organic synthesis has seen equally rapid advances.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a spectroscopic method, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) has seen spectacular growth over the past two decades, both as a technique and in its applications. Today the applications of NMR span a wide range of scientific disciplines, from physics to biology to medicine. Each volume of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance comprises a combination of annual and biennial reports which together provide comprehensive of the literature on this topic. This Specialist Periodical Report reflects the growing volume of published work involving NMR techniques and applications, in particular NMR of natural macromolecules which is covered in two reports: "NMR of Proteins and Acids" and "NMR of Carbohydrates, Lipids and Membranes". For those wanting to become rapidly acquainted with specific areas of NMR, this title provides unrivalled scope of coverage. Seasoned practitioners of NMR will find this an in valuable source of current methods and applications. Specialist Periodical Reports provide systematic and detailed review coverage in major areas of chemical research. Compiled by teams of leading authorities in the relevant subject areas, the series creates a unique service for the active research chemist, with regular, in-depth accounts of progress in particular fields of chemistry. Subject coverage within different volumes of a given title is similar and publication is on an annual or biennial basis.

Book excerpt: This Handbook, pinpoints salient features of known information about Terpenoids in a readily accessible and readable format. Terpenoids have singularly enriched organic chemistry by its variety of structural types, by its wealth ofunexpected reactions, rearrangements and spectral features, and by offering exciting targets for synthesis. Much imaginative experimental work has been invested in exploring their natural pathways. Recent years have revealed an increasingly important biological and ecological role for several of its members.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this ASI was to bring together specialists in several complex variables (many of whom have contributed to complex potential theory) and specialists in potential theory (all of whom have contributed to several complex variables) together with young researchers and graduate students for an interchange of ideas and techniques. Not only was the status of current research presented, but also the relevant background, much of which is not yet available in books. The following topics and interconnections among them were discussed: 1. Real and Complex Potential Theory. Capacity and approximation, basic prop erties of plurisubharmonic functions and methods to manipulate their singularities and study their growth, Green functions, Chebyshev-type quadratures, electrostatic fields and potentials, propagation of smallness. 2. Complex Dynamics. Review of complex dynamics in one variable, Julia sets, Fatou sets, background in several variables, Henon maps, ergodicity, use of potential theory and multifunctions. 3. Banach Algebras and Infinite Dimensional Holomorphy. Analytic multi functions, spectral theory, analytic functions on a Banach space, semigroups of holomor phic isometries, Pick interpolation on uniform algebras and Von Neumann inequalities for operators on a Hilbert space. The basic notion of complex potential theory is that of a plurisubharmonic function.
