Book excerpt: This study of European natural philosophy begins with the classical conceptions of Mind, Soul, Nature and the Unconscious and analyses the revival of these notions in the natural philosophy of the Renaissance and the Seventeenth century. The concept of the Unconscious acquired a major importance in the systems of the German vitalist biologists and the Idealistic philosophers of the Nineteenth century. Jacob shows how these various thinkers, as well as the German Romantic philosophers, and especially Schubert, Carus, Schopenhauer, and Hartmann, not only revived the ancient doctrines of the Soul in their metaphysical schemes but also anticipated the psychological theories of Jung, who, as a psychologist and philosopher, serves as the culminating point of the work. In the Appendix, the author points to the natural philosophical bases of the discussions of racial differences that emerged in the Nineteenth century alongside the investigations into the spiritual capacities of mankind. Alexander Jacob obtained his Ph.D. in the History of Ideas from Pennsylvania State University and is the author of Nobilitas: A Study of Aristocratic Philosophy from Ancient Greece to the Early Twentieth Century, and Atman: A Reconstruction of the Solar Cosmology of the Indo-Europeans. His major editions of German conservative political thinkers include Edgar Julius Jung: 's The Rule of the Inferiour, the anthology Europa: German Conservative Foreign Policy 1870-1940, and Houston Stewart Chamberlain's Political Ideals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, honoring the renowned historian of science, Allen G Debus, explores ideas of science - `experiences of nature' - from within a historiographical tradition that Debus has done much to define. As his work shows, the sciences do not develop exclusively as a result of a progressive and inexorable logic of discovery. A wide variety of extra-scientific factors, deriving from changing intellectual contexts and differing social millieus, play crucial roles in the overall development of scientific thought. These essays represent case studies in a broad range of scientific settings - from sixteenth-century astronomy and medicine, through nineteenth-century biology and mathematics, to the social sciences in the twentieth-century - that show the impact of both social settings and the cross-fertilization of ideas on the formation of science. Aimed at a general audience interested in the history of science, this book closes with Debus's personal perspective on the development of the field. Audience: This book will appeal especially to historians of science, of chemistry, and of medicine.

Book Critique of Pure Nature

Download or read book Critique of Pure Nature written by Simona Stano and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-12-29 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book challenges the Western contemporary “praise for Nature”. From food to body practices, from ecological discourses to the Covid-19 pandemic, contemporary imaginaries abound with representations of an ideal “pure Nature”, essentially defined according to a logic of denial of any artificial, modified, manipulated — in short, cultural — aspect. How should we contextualise and understand such an opposition, especially in light of the rich semantic scope of the term “nature” and its variability over time? And how can we — if we actually can — envisage alternative models and approaches capable of better accounting for such richness and variability? The author addresses these fundamental issues, combining an initial theoretical problematisation of the concept of nature and its evolution — from classical philosophy to the crucial changes occurred through the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, Romanticism and the modern era, finally considering recent insights in philosophy, sociology, cultural anthropology and semiotics — with the analysis of its discursivisation — from the iconography of Mother Nature between the past and the present to the representation of catastrophic events in fictional and non-fictional texts, from clean eating and other popular food trends to the ambivalence of the naked body between its supposed natural ascription and its multiple cultural characterisations. Thus she introduces a critique of pure Nature, providing a systematic study of the way nature is attributed meaning and value in some of today’s most relevant discourses and practices, and finally tracing a possible path towards an “internatural turn”.

Book Questions Concerning the Law of Nature

Download or read book Questions Concerning the Law of Nature written by John Locke and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2008-01-29 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Locke's untitled manuscript "Questions Concerning the Law of Nature" (1664) was his only work focused on the subject of natural law, a circumstance that is especially surprising since his published writings touch on the subject frequently, if inconclusively. Containing a substantial apparatus criticus, this new edition of Locke's manuscript is faithful to Locke's original intentions.

Book Leopardi and the Theory of Poetry

Download or read book Leopardi and the Theory of Poetry written by G. Singh and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-07-15 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this first detailed and comprehensive account of Leopardi's theory of poetry, G. Singh assesses both the literary and critical attainments of a poet whose eminence ranks him with Dante and Petrarch. Singh's analysis, which employs extensive reference to Leopardi's work in order to illustrate the author's own comments, sets forth Leopardi's views on the larger questions of tradition, inspiration, and the imagination in poetry. Later chapters are concerned with the more specific matters of the poetic image, style, and language.
