Book Peri urban Landscape

Download or read book Peri urban Landscape written by Jacopo Mughini Gras and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2024-10-04 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book underlines the importance of establishing, in the planning and urban policies oriented towards sustainability, a relationship between the urban expansion – observed in its different forms and dynamics – and the ability of soil and landscape to support agricultural productivity and interface processes. This is the development of a specific investigation theme linked to the problem of soil degradation and peri-urban lands allows a valuable re-interpretation in the field of landscape studies. This book queries the value of the "rural" around a city, in a multidisciplinary perspective encompassing land transformations, good practices, and urban planning trends. Land transformations are at the center of analysis and discussions on the management, planning, and design of the landscape everywhere. This topic is particularly appropriate for European landscapes where land changes are often associated with the degradation of rural and natural areas. This issue represents a crucial point within the framework of the ecological transition towards a truly sustainable society and economy, as established by the European Union. This book is the result of detailed bibliographic research, of in-depth historical research on the most recent challenges and topics of greatest interest in the field of urban studies. Original landscape transformations analyses were performed, introducing also some practical cases, considered relevant contributions in spatial planning.

Book The Valtellina and UNESCO

Download or read book The Valtellina and UNESCO written by Thomas J. Puleo and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2012-09-16 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global in scope and transdisciplinary in method, this work examines the process through which local historic landscapes become global heritage sites. The Valtellina, a valley in the Italian Alps, is known for being unusually fertile for its elevation and latitude, and for the dry stone terraces on its steep hillsides that make this fertility possible. ProVinea, a local nonprofit, has applied to UNESCO to inscribe these landscapes onto its World Heritage list, representing the construction and use of the terraces as the heroic transformation of barren slopes into fertile fields. Drawing on Michel Serres’ theory of serial parasitism, this study demonstrates how ProVinea discursively and materially remakes the landscapes by culling the advantageous, eliminating the detrimental, and assembling the dispersed. A casualty of this process is a more complex and complete truth, one that this book aims to restore, while also acknowledging the validity of World Heritage’s efforts to build a global culture and ProVinea’s desire to connect to it.

Book Taccuino sul paesaggio rurale Le colline del vino

Download or read book Taccuino sul paesaggio rurale Le colline del vino written by Laurana Lajolo and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2014-08-22 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Il paesaggio agrario italiano

Download or read book Il paesaggio agrario italiano written by Autori Vari and published by Viella Libreria Editrice. This book was released on 2023-03-22T16:35:00+01:00 with total page 725 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Geocomputation Sustainability and Environmental Planning

Download or read book Geocomputation Sustainability and Environmental Planning written by Beniamino Murgante and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-03-23 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The experience developed by Ian McHarg represents the first attempt to base environmental planning on more objective methods. In particular, he supposed that the real world can be considered as a layer cake and each layer represents a sectoral analysis. This metaphor represents the fundamental of overlay mapping. At the beginning, these principles have been applied only by hand, just considering the degree of darkness, produced by layer transparency, as a negative impact. In the following years, this craftmade approach, has been adopted for data organization in Geographical Information Systems producing analyses with a high level of quality and rigour. Nowadays, great part of studies in environmental planning field have been developed using GIS. The next step relative to the simple use of geographic information in supporting environmental planning is the adoption of spatial simulation models, which can predict the evolution of phenomena. As the use of spatial information has definitely improved the quality of data sets on which basing decision-making process, the use of Geostatistics, spatial simulation and, more generally, geocomputation methods allows the possibility of basing the decision-making process on predicted future scenarios. It is very strange that a discipline such as planning which programs the territory for the future years in great part of cases is not based on simulation models. Sectoral analyses, often based on surveys, are not enough to highlight dynamics of an area. Better knowing urban and environmental changes occurred in the past, it is possible to provide better simulations to predict possible tendencies. The aim of this book is to provide an overview of the main methods and techniques adopted in the field of environmental geocomputation in order to produce a more sustainable development.

Book Building on Water

    Book Details:
  • Author : Salvatore Ciriacono
  • Publisher : Berghahn Books
  • Release : 2006-05
  • ISBN : 1845450655
  • Pages : 318 pages

Download or read book Building on Water written by Salvatore Ciriacono and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2006-05 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fundamental natural resource, water and its use not only reflect "modes of production" but also that complex interplay between resources and their exploitation (and domination) by various social agents, who in their turn are inevitably influenced by the abundance or rarity of water supplies. Focusing on scientific, social and economic issues from the 16th to the 19th century, the author, one of Italy's leading historians in this field, looks at the innumerable conflicts that arose over water resources and the environmental impact of projects intended to control them. Venice and Holland are undoubtedly the two most fascinating cases of societies "built on water," with the conquest of vast expanses of marshland - either inland or on the coast (the Dutch polders or the Venetian lagoon) – not only stimulating agricultural production, but also nurturing a deeply-felt relationship between the local populations and the element of water itself. The author rounds off his study by looking at the influence the hydraulic technology developed in Holland would have on many European countries (France, England and Germany in particular) and at questions raised by contemporaries about the environmental impact of agricultural progress and its effects upon the social-economic equilibria within the communities concerned.

Book Italian Historical Rural Landscapes

Download or read book Italian Historical Rural Landscapes written by Mauro Agnoletti and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-09 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sustainable development and rural policies have pursued strategies where farming has been often regarded as a factor deteriorating the ecosystem. But the current economic, social and environmental problems of the Earth probably call for examples of a positive integration between human society and nature. This research work presents more than a hundred case studies where the historical relationships between man and nature have generated, not deterioration, but cultural, environmental, social and economic values. The results show that is not only the economic face of globalization that is negatively affecting the landscape, but also inappropriate environmental policies. The CBD-UNESCO program on biocultural diversity, the FAO Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems and several projects of the International Union of Forest Research Organizations, as well as European rural policies acknowledge the importance of cultural values associated to landscape. This research intends to support these efforts.
