It looks at expositions, museums and the urban built environment at particular moments in both colonial and postcolonial eras and analyses their discursive relations in the construction of Korean nationalism. By linking concepts of visual spectacle, urban space and governmentality, this book explores how such notions made the nation imaginable to the public in both the past and the present; how they represented a new modality of seeing for the state and contributed to the shaping of collective identities in colonial and postcolonial Korea. The author further examines how their different modes were associated with the change in governmentality in Korea. In addressing these questions, the book interprets the politics behind the culture of displays and shows both the continuity and the transformation of spectacles as a governing technology in twentieth-century Korea. Aesthetic Constructions of Korean Nationalism is a significant contribution to a study of the politics of visual culture in colonial and postcolonial Korea. Book excerpt: Nationalism, National Identity and Movements begins by presenting an examination of how forced migratory movements, although seeming to question traditional national principles of the sovereign state as well as undermining or even eroding nationalist value systems, ended up strengthening the power of the nation-states during the period after the Second World War. In particular, it will investigate how different waves of refugees contributed to the consolidation of one specific type of nationalism: the ethnic one.Next, the authors analyse the role of national narratives in the development of national identity. This interdisciplinary approach offers a more complete and analytical understanding of how narratives of national identity are produced, transmitted and finally consumed by the members of a nation.Also in this book, detailed theoretical rationale for the relationships between identification and threat perceptions is presented, exploring the issues related to causal direction and links to attitudes toward immigrants and immigration policies. Although having a national identity on its own is not troubling, possessing an inflated sense of national identity, referred to as national group narcissism, may lead to biased perceptions of intergroup relations.Following this, the authors describe three different types of artworks and the identities associated with each artist in order to reveal the complex process through which Korean identity is formed. This research identifies the first type of artist as one who left South Korea as an adult in order to be deterritorialized from the given territory, and the individual's Koreanness has been one rediscovered by dialectical play with the Other.Usage of the colonial discourse is proposed as a way to represent social relationships, providing additional opportunities for the analysis of the political situation in Russia. Thus, the work of contemporary intellectuals who identify themselves as "Russian nationalists" is analyzed. Conclusions are made regarding the fundamental conflictual nature of intellectuals.The construction of a unified Mexican national identity is depicted in the concluding chapter, in a territory originally divided by adversarial ethnic groups into one nation glued by a common language and history. The authors conclude that nationalism in Mexico must be understood within educational, historical and contextual influences to assess costs and benefits.

Book excerpt: This research project investigates the growing ambivalence and antagonism of South Korean young people toward unification with North Korea. Historically, ideas of nation and identity, and thus unification, have been based upon the ethnic and cultural homogeneity of all Korean people. More recently, there has emerged a new type of nationalism based on strikingly different notions of identity. This work addresses the central puzzle of how long-held views of Korean nation and national identity have been challenged so dramatically in recent years - in particular amongst the young. Using data obtained from over 90 interviews, surveys and other documentary evidence collected in the field, I show how negativity toward unification with North Korea is increasing and argue that a new South Korean nationalism has arisen amongst South Korea's young people. This new nationalism is demonstrated both by the changing attitudes to unification and North Korea and by a growing sense of national pride and confidence in South Korea. The new nationalism can be described as a globalised-cultural nationalism, reflecting the central role played by globalisation in its construction and expression. This work contests the assumption that unification 'is the hope of all Koreans' and the inevitable outcome for the Korean peninsula. It contributes to understanding short-term challenges as more North Koreans move to the South and provides insights into longer-term preparations for possible reunification. From a theoretical perspective, this thesis builds upon existing nationalist literature by exploring the development of nationalism in established nations, and describing the importance and role of globalisation in the evolution of modern nationalist sentiment.

Newspapers were the primary location for the re-imagining of the nation, enabling readers to move away from the conceptual framework inherited from a Confucian and dynastic past toward a nationalist vision that was deeply rooted in global ideologies of capitalist modernity. As producers and disseminators of knowledge about the nation, newspapers mediated perceptions of Korea's precarious place amid Chinese and Japanese colonial ambitions and were vitally important to the rise of a nationalist movement in Korea.

Past scholarship on the culture of nationalism has largely focused on the ways in which institutions utilize memory and "history" to construct national identity. In a provocative departure, Laura C. Nelson challenges these assumptions with regard to South Korea, arguing that its identity has been as much tied to notions of the future as rooted in a recollection of the past. Following a backlash against consumerism in the late 1980s, the government spearheaded a program of frugality that eschewed imported goods and foreign travel in order to strengthen South Korea's national identity. Consumption—with its focus on immediate gratification—threatened the state's future-oriented discourse of national unity. In response to this perceived danger, Nelson asserts, the government cast women as the group whose "excessive desires" for material goods were endangering the nation.

Book excerpt: This dissertation examines whether, among Koreans in the premodern period, there existed a shared collective identity that could be utilized by modernizing nationalists and that significantly informed the nature of nationalism in twentieth century Korea. The specific time this dissertation delves into is the period of the Choso n dynasty (1392-1910), especially the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries which are believed to be the most important period of Korea's institutional and philosophical systemization. Examining the reciprocal interactions among Choso n people and their accompanying political and intellectual debates, this dissertation explores how the government's state-building project, generally understood as Korea's Confucianization in existing studies, contributed to the construction of a shared collective identity among the constituent social groups of Choso n. This dissertation consists of four chapters. Chapter One delves into ritual debates such as the debates on the sacrifice to Heaven during the early Choso n period in which the Choso n elite should refer to their state's history and tradition to support their arguments. Chapter Two deals with the tension between Korea's socio-cultural heritage and the new cultural and institutional tendencies accompanied by the influx of Neo-Confucianism in the late fifteenth century. Chapter Three examines how the elite's efforts to transmit their core values to the non-elite influenced the construction of people's sense of belonging to a larger collectivity whose members shared the same social and cultural values. The final chapter discusses how the non-elite in Choso n reacted to the elite's guidance and how they reinterpreted the values the elite emphasized. This chapter leads to the conclusion that the systemization of rituals and institutions where various social groups of Choso n people could reciprocally interact contributed to the construction of a certain Koreanness By putting more emphasis on Korea's historical and cultural context, this dissertation suggests that Korea had its own process of change, constructing a distinctive political and social entity which is different from but not inferior to Western nation-states. Also, questioning dangerous generalizations about "Asian" or "Confucian" cultures, this dissertation posits that Korea and other Asian cultures should be seen not as backwaters outside the mainstream of world history but rather as representative examples of the historical processes of nation formation.
