Book Tourism Tradition and Culture

Download or read book Tourism Tradition and Culture written by David Harrison and published by CABI. This book was released on 2020-11-18 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Harrison has contributed to the academic study of tourism over the last 30 years. This book brings together a collection of his published material that reflects the role played by tourism in 'development', both in societies emerging from Western colonialism and in societies previously part of the Soviet system. The overarching theme looks at how, promoted as a tool for development, tourism can lead to conflict between competing elites, but can also empower groups previously subject to constraint by traditional authorities. Tradition is intensely manipulatable and always reflects power relations. Such pressure on tradition is but one aspect of tourism's wider social impacts. This includes changes in economic and social structure, which, for many, constitute social problems that need to be addressed. At the same time, 'sustainability', though apparently a worthy aim, can be a problematic concept, especially when applied to 'traditional' cultures, and may conflict with such ideals as egalitarianism.

Book excerpt: This report explores potential links between the agriculture and tourism sectors that could strengthen infrastructure development and inclusive growth in the Lao People's Democratic Republic. Over the last 3 decades, the Lao People's Democratic Republic has seen remarkable economic growth, with per capita income quadrupling between 1989 and 2019. However, this growth has been accompanied by widening inequality as the economy generated limited job opportunities beyond agriculture. In the aftermath of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, this report emphasizes the need to develop synergies between agriculture and tourism. It recommends investing in infrastructure, human capital, and digital connectivity among other development areas in the country's agriculture and tourism sectors.

Book Real Tourism

Download or read book Real Tourism written by Claudio Minca and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past decade tourism studies has broken out of its traditional institutional affiliation with business and management programs to take its legitimate place as an interdisciplinary social science field of cutting edge scholarship. There is a need for the field to come to terms theoretically with the contemporary and future realities of tourism as a truly global phenomenon. This significant volume seeks to set the theoretical agenda, engaging directly with what tourism does in practice and in place and demonstrate the need for a theoretical intervention that moves tourism scholarship beyond the province of Anglophone thinking. The volume achieves this by explicitly bridging 'western' and 'non-western' scholarship on tourism; reframing theoretical discussions around 'real practices' instead of abstract typologies; and radically delinking tourism theory from the grand narratives of modernity and assumptions about authenticity, identity, tradition, and development.

Book Tourism and Ethnodevelopment

Download or read book Tourism and Ethnodevelopment written by Ismar Borges de Lima and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-13 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ethnodevelopment is a well-established concept in the field of development studies. Despite its relevance to tourism initiatives and processes in the Global South, it continues to be an underutilised concept in the field. This book bridges this gap, presenting an original conceptual framework to study the relationship between tourism and ethnodevelopment. It focuses on the processes of inclusion, empowerment, self-expression and self-determination to explore the effects of tourism initiatives on the identities, cultural resilience, livelihoods and economic opportunities of ethnic minority communities. Chapters explore a range of concepts and issues such as gender, authenticity, indigenous knowledge, tradition, the commodification of culture, community-based tourism, local entrepreneurship, cultural heritage, and tourism and the environment. Drawing on rich primary research conducted across South East Asia and South and Central America the book offers detailed evaluations of the successes and failures of various tourism policies and practices. This book makes a valuable contribution for students, scholars, practitioners and policy-makers alike interested in tourism, development studies, geography and anthropology.

Book Tourism in Transitions

Download or read book Tourism in Transitions written by Dieter K. Müller and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-08-21 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the relationship between transition and tourism geographies on a global scale, discussing how tourism has been used as a tool to recover from decline or to manage change caused by event-driven, rapid transitions in a region’s economy, politics or environment. With case studies from Europe, America, Asia and Africa, it provides examples of how specific communities and industries around the globe have reacted for better or worse. It also includes analyses of shifts within the tourism industry itself and examines the complex issues arising for localities that have to face the demands and standards of an increasingly globally interlinked tourism industry. From Whistler to Angola, casino gaming in Colorado to art tourism in Japan, the contributors investigate such factors as tourism-induced community change; the social and economic impacts second-home owners have on rural communities in the developing world; reconstruction of local tourism systems after crisis events such as wars; and the competitiveness of ski areas in light of climate change. Overall, the book offers a thoughtful study of the role of geographical and temporal scales for tourism during periods of unprecedented transition, equipping readers with new ways of conceptualizing change and adaptation.
