At the same time, the slow but steady shift of recent years to the right was arrested, and to some degree even reversed. Overall, there remains a good deal of flexibility in Israeli public opinion, which under certain circumstances -- especially strong and charismatic political leadership, backed by a vibrant and united government -- allows considerable room for creative measures.
