This book was released on 1980 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Packers Pond Dam, built about 1880 to provide water for industrial use, is an earth embankment impounding 450 acre-feet of water on Mill Brook. The length of the dam, including the spillway, is 325 feet. The top of the dam averages between 12-15 feet in width and is approximately 18 feet above the old streambed at the spillway discharge channel. The spillway, located at the right end of the dam, is a 64 foot long, broad-crested, stone masonry structure which provides 4.4 feet of freeboard from the crest to the top of the dam. The outlet is a concrete intake and gate structure located on the upstream slope at the left end of the dam. The gate is not functional and the size of the outlet could not be exactly determined. However, the outlet is assumed to be approximately 3 feet wide by 2.5 high. A railroad embankment runs along the downstream toe of the dam. This embankment is about 24 feet in height, with the top of the embankment approximately 12 feet higher than the top of the dam. The spillway capacity with the pond level at the top of the dam is 1700 cfs, which is 28% of the routed test flood outflow.

This book was released on 1979 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Papermill Pond Dam is a 573 ft. long composite rubble masonry, concrete, and earth embankment dam consisting of a 124.5 ft. long gravity masonry overflow section, and 84 ft. long earth embankment to the right of the overflow section and a 365 ft. long earth embankment to the left of the overflow section. About 160 ft. of the upstream face of the left embankment is paved with concrete. It is a run-of-the-river dam which is used for storing process water for a paper mill located upstream on the left bank of the river. In the left embankment there is an intake which controlled flows through a conduit to a turbine facility in a mill building located immediately downstream of the dam. The turbine has been abandoned and the mill building is in the process of being razed. The spillway for the dam is equipped with 2.3 ft. high permanent wooden flashboards. The dam is judged to be in generally good condition, but is rated as in fair condition owing to the absence of a dewatering facility. There is brush growth on both embankments. Mortar is missing from the joints of the rubble masonry section of the spillway. There is a crack in the concrete apron on the left embankment and the construction joints of the apron have opened up. Minor erosion has taken place on the downstream slope of the left embankment. The spillway can pass 7,750 cfs or about 72 percent of the routed test flood outflow without overtopping the right embankment.

This book was released on 1980 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dam, built around 1920, has a total length of approximately 400 feet, consisting of a 184 foot long board-crested masonry spillway, a 190 foot long earth embankment, and a 27 foot long sluiceway. The top of the embankment, at elevation 88.7, is approximately 20 feet wide, 8.7 feet above the spillway crest, and 23 feet above the streambed of the Little River. With the pond level to the top of the dam, the pond impounds approximately 1000 acre-feet of water. The sluiceway at the left end of the dam leads to abandoned factory buildings about 400 feet from the dam. The intake to the sluiceway is a wood bulkhead, which contains 5 gates. Based upon the visual inspection at the site and past performance, the project is judged to be in poor condition. No evidence of instability of the project was observed. However, there are items which require maintenance, such as the dense vegetation on the embankment and the inoperable sluice gates. The spillway capacity with the pond level to the top of the dam is 13,000 cfs, which is equivalent to 108% of the routed test flood outflow.

Peak inflow to the reservoir at the 1/2 PMF is 8,610 cubic feet per second; peak outflow is 7,730 cfe with the dam overtopped by 2.7 feet. The spillway capacity with the reservoir level to the top of the dam is 1,610 cfs, which is equivalent to 21% of the routed test flood outflow.

Book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams North Grosvenordale Pond Dam CT 00183 Thames River Basin Thompson Connecticut Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams North Grosvenordale Pond Dam CT 00183 Thames River Basin Thompson Connecticut Phase I Inspection Report written by CORPS OF ENGINEERS WALTHAM MA NEW ENGLAND DIV. and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: North Grosvenordale Pond Dam is a composite masonry and earth dam consisting of two downstream stepped, ashlar faced masonry overflow sections, a granite block and earth fill right abutment and an earth fill right abutment and and earthfill dike on the left abutment. The entire length of the dam is about 2,400 ft. It is a run-of-the-river dam which once served the industrial needs of the downstream mill. Outflows through the millrace are now used for fire protection of the mill. North Grosvenordale Pond is about 1.5 miles long and has a surface area at spillway level of about 60 acres. The drainage area above the dam is about 99 sq. mi. and the maximum storage to the top of the dam is estimated at about 840 acre-ft. The dam is judged to be in generally fair condition. At the time of the inspections, water was flowing over the right spillway, so that it was not possible to observe the condition of the downstream ashlar face, or to determine whether there is any erosion at the toe of the spillways. The crest of the left spillway is higher than the right spillway. The difference is less than 6 in. The sluiceway through the left spillway is inoperative. Some of the left spillway stones have been dislodged and displaces. Several joints in the training walls are in need of repointing. The bridges over the spillways are in a deteriorating condition. Tree and brush growth is abundant along the left abutment dike. The spillways are not adequate to pass the 1/2 PMP test flood of 25,400 cfs without overtopping the non-overflow sections of the dam. The test flood would overtop the dike by about 2.2 ft. The spillway can pass 4,950 cfs or about 20 percent of the test flood without overtopping the dike.

This book was released on 1980 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abbott Dam consists of an earth embankment 440 feet long, 33.5 feet high, with a crest width of 14 feet. Both the upstream and downstream slopes are grass-covered but otherwise unprotected. The facility has two spillways. The normal spillway consists of a vertical drop inlet structure which connects with the outlet conduit through the dam embankment. The emergency spillway is a trapezoidal channel, 40 feet wide at the base, which excavated in natural ground. The facility has one gate valve for the purpose of lowering the pond level, however, this valve was inoperable at the time of the inspection. The assessment of the facility is based on the visual inspection, since only limited engineering, operational, and maintenance data are available. The dam is judged to be in FAIR condition with several maintenance items that require attention to insure the long term performance of the items that require attention to insure the long term performance of the structure. These items include: erosion of embankment due to wash and turbulence at the outlet, seepage from the abutment areas, vibration of the outlet conduit caused by the turbulent outflow from the conduit and the inoperable gate valve. The dam has sufficient outflow capacity to prevent overtopping of the embankment by the test flood. The combined discharge capacity of both the drop inlet spillway and the emergency spillway is 1192 CFS which represents 277 percent of the test flood outflow. The capacity of the emergency spillway represents approximately 95 percent of the total discharge capacity of the dam.

Download or read book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Sawmill Pond Dam CT 00627 Thames River Basin Voluntown Connecticut Phase I Inspection Report written by CORPS OF ENGINEERS WALTHAM MA NEW ENGLAND DIV. and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sawmill Pond dam is a 180 foot long earth embankment including a 51.5 foot long spillway and 15.5 foot wide intake structure. The dam has a maximum height of 20 feet and an impoundment capacity of 40 acre-feet. The downstream face of the earth embankment is a vertical stone masonry wall and the upstream face has a slope of 2:1. A 15.5 foot wide headrace extends from the intake structure at the left abutment to about 100 feet downstream. The maximum spillway capacity is equal to 1,120 CFS which represents only 9% of the test flood outflow. It is recommended that the owner engage the services of a registered engineer experienced in the design of dams to accomplish the following: (1) Perform detailed hydrologic and hydraulic studies to assess further the potential for overtopping the dam and the need for and means to increase the project discharge capacity; (2) Inspect the downstream face of the principal spillway with no water flowing over it; (3) Evaluate the seepage from the right embankment and the left side of the principal spillway; (4) Evaluate the need for, and design as required, a low level outlet to control the pond level; (5) Recommend and supervise the placement of riprap on the upstream face and abutments; (6) Remove trees and their root systems from the dam to a distance of 15 feet downstream and backfill the holes with appropriate compacted soil.

Book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Pin Shop Pond Dam CT 00127 Naugatuck River Basin Watertown Connecticut Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Program for Inspection of Non Federal Dams Pin Shop Pond Dam CT 00127 Naugatuck River Basin Watertown Connecticut Phase I Inspection Report written by CORPS OF ENGINEERS WALTHAM MA NEW ENGLAND DIV. and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pin Shop Pond Dam consists of an earth embankment with a 100 fokot long stone masonry overflow spillway located at the left end of the dam. Teh dam has a total length of 400 feet and a miximum height of 23 feet. The outlet works located to the left of the spillway consistk of an intake sluice gate which discharges into a stone masonry and concrete structure. A 16-inch gate valve drains the structure and discharges downstream of the spillway, A conduit to a downstream industrial complex is plugged with concrete. Based on the visual inspection, the dam is judged to be in poor condition. The future integrity of the dam can be affected by the lack of slope protection on the upstream slope, and continued erosion of the upstream and downstream slopes; trees on the embankment; continued undermining of the spillway apron; vegetation growing in open joints of the stone masonry training walls; the poor condition of the outlet works; and indagequate spillway capacity. The spillway has a capacity of 3,200 cfs and is capable of discharging 34 percent of the Test Flood outflow.
