Book Where the Deer and the Antelope Play

Download or read book Where the Deer and the Antelope Play written by Nick Offerman and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2023-10-03 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A humorous and rousing set of literal and figurative sojourns as well as a mission statement about comprehending, protecting, and truly experiencing the outdoors, fueled by three journeys undertaken by actor, humorist, and New York Times bestselling author Nick Offerman Nick Offerman has always felt a particular affection for the Land of the Free—not just for the people and their purported ideals but to the actual land itself: the bedrock, the topsoil, and everything in between that generates the health of your local watershed. In his new book, Nick takes a humorous, inspiring, and elucidating trip to America's trails, farms, and frontier to examine the people who inhabit the land, what that has meant to them and us, and to the land itself, both historically and currently. In 2018, Wendell Berry posed a question to Nick, a query that planted the seed of this book, sending Nick on two memorable journeys with pals—a hiking trip to Glacier National Park with his friends Jeff Tweedy and George Saunders, as well as an extended visit to his friend James Rebanks, the author of The Shepherd's Life and English Pastoral. He followed that up with an excursion that could only have come about in 2020—Nick and his wife, Megan Mullally, bought an Airstream trailer to drive across (several of) the United States. These three quests inspired some “deep-ish" thinking from Nick, about the history and philosophy of our relationship with nature in our national parks, in our farming, and in our backyards; what we mean when we talk about conservation; and the importance of outdoor recreation, all subjects very close to Nick's heart. With witty, heartwarming stories and a keen insight into the human problems we all confront, this is both a ramble through and celebration of the land we all love.

Download or read book Escaping Nature written by Orrin H. Pilkey and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2024-02-23 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Industrial and agricultural greenhouse gas emissions are rapidly warming Earth’s climate, unleashing rising seas, ocean acidification, melting permafrost, powerful storms, wildfires, floods, deadly heat waves, droughts, tsunamis, food shortages, and armed conflict over shrinking water supplies while reducing nutritional levels in crops. Billions of people will become climate refugees. Hotter temperatures will allow tropical diseases to spread into temperate regions. Higher levels of CO2, allergens, dust, and other particulate matter will impair our physical and mental health and even reduce our cognitive abilities. Climate change disproportionately affects the world’s poor. It also harms Nature, and could ultimately trigger a sixth mass extinction. In Escaping Nature, Orrin H. Pilkey and his coauthors offer concrete suggestions for how to respond to the threats posed by global climate change. They argue that while we wait for the world’s governments to get serious about mitigating climate change we can adapt to a hotter world through technological innovations, behavioral changes, nature-based solutions, political changes, and education.

Book The Nature of the State

  • Author : Mark Whitehead
  • Publisher : OUP Oxford
  • Release : 2007-01-11
  • ISBN : 0191515132

Download or read book The Nature of the State written by Mark Whitehead and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2007-01-11 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twin categories of the state and nature collectively embody some of the most fundamental reference points around which our lives and thinking are organized. Despite their combined significance, however, the complex relationships that exist between modern states and nature remain under-theorized and are relatively unexplored. Through a detailed study of different sites, moments, and framing strategies The Nature of the State challenges the ways in which geographers and social scientists approach the study of state-nature relations. The authors analyse different instances of state-nature interaction from all over the world, considering the geo-politics of resource conflicts, the operation of natural history museums, the organizational practices of environmental departments and ministries, the regulation of genetic science, and contemporary forms of state intervention within issues of climate change. Introducing original research into the different institutional, spatial, and temporal strategies used by states to frame the natural world this book provides a critical overview of the latest political and ecological theories and addresses a wide range of pressing socio-environmental debates.

Dwayne Johnson: Far from Rock Bottom Every actor’s road to fame is different, but Dwayne Johnson’s path has been one of the most unique. Over a career that has taken him from the squared circle to the silver screen, “The Rock” has entertained countless fans and done his best to give back. Born in California in 1972, Johnson quickly became familiar with the family business: professional wrestling. Both his father and grandfather were wrestling stars, and even his grandmother was involved in wrestling as a promoter. Early on, he participated in football, wrestling, and track at schools in both New Zealand and the United States. After his studies concluded, Johnson decided to play professional football in Canada. Unfortunately, Johnson was cut from his football team just two months into his debut season. Soon after, he followed in his father’s—and grandfather’s—footsteps. He joined the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) in 1996 as a “sports entertainer,” a term that refers to the WWF’s wrestling matches being more like performance art than actual fights. Fans disliked Johnson at first, but once he assumed the character of “The Rock,” he turned into one of the WWF’s biggest stars. In fact, one of Johnson’s signature phrases, “Smackdown,” became so popular that it was added to Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary as a new word! Johnson credits his appearance on the American show Saturday Night Live in the year 2000 with helping him become an actor. Since then, he has gone on to feature in dozens of Hollywood productions, including Get Smart, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, and the Fast & Furious series. He can also be seen in Jungle Cruise, based on the Disney ride of the same name. Even though Johnson never made it as a professional football player, he never forgot his football days at his alma mater. In 2007, he and his ex-wife donated one million dollars to the University of Miami to improve its football facilities. Johnson also has a charity, the Dwayne Johnson Rock Foundation, that works with at-risk and terminally ill children. In addition to this, Johnson has his own movie production company, Seven Bucks Productions. The name comes from the amount of money Johnson had left after his stint in Canadian football. But Johnson’s luck sure has changed since then. Last year, he topped Forbes magazine’s list as the world’s highest-paid actor, earning $89.4 million in the previous year. And perhaps more important than his financial success, Johnson’s fellow actors routinely describe him as energetic, focused, and devoted—three qualities that have helped him greatly on his unique path to the top of Hollywood. Live Interactive English Live互動英語 NO. 231 July 2020年7月號 4 Live關鍵時事新聞 9 焦點話題 10 大師名作選 Charles 〈查爾斯〉 14 食物起源 The Skinny on Sausages 千變萬化的美味香腸 18 日常好用句 I have a frog in my throat. The Secret of How Bats Keep Viruses at Bay What’s in a Skyscraper? Have Your Cake . . . and Eat It! Are Subtitles Still a Turnoff for Western Audiences? Political Correctness: A War of Words

Book excerpt: An award†‘winning environmental historian explores American history through wrenching, tragic, and sometimes humorous stories of getting lost The human species has a propensity for getting lost. The American people, inhabiting a mental landscape shaped by their attempts to plant roots and to break free, are no exception. In this engaging book, environmental historian Jon Coleman bypasses the trailblazers so often described in American history to follow instead the strays and drifters who went missing. From Hernando de Soto’s failed quest for riches in the American southeast to the recent trend of getting lost as a therapeutic escape from modernity, this book details a unique history of location and movement as well as the confrontations that occur when our physical and mental conceptions of space become disjointed. Whether we get lost in the woods, the plains, or the digital grid, Coleman argues that getting lost allows us to see wilderness anew and connect with generations across five centuries to discover a surprising and edgy American identity.
