The fifth follow-up survey of the National Longitudinal Study of the High School Class of 1972 (NLS-72) took place during spring and summer of 1986. A mail questionnaire was sent to a subsample of 14,489 members of the original sample of 22,652. A total of 12,841 persons returned the questionnaire, for a response rate of 89 percent. By the time of the survey, the sample members averaged 32 years of age and had been out of high school for 14 years. The fifth follow-up marked the first time that NORC conducted the NLS-72 survey. This report: (1) summarizes the base year sample selection procedures, and describes in detail the selection procedures for the fifth follow-up survey; (2) describes the calculation of sample case weights that adjust for differential probabilities of selection and for nonresponse within weighting cells; (3) examines the possible impact of survey nonresponse, a potential source of bias; (4) presents a description of nonresponse rates among various subclasses of the fifth follow-up sample; (5) describes procedures for computing sampling errors and design effects; and (6) discusses the approach NORC has taken to this problem. Sampling errors and design effects are presented for a set of proportions for the entire sample and for important domains or subgroups. Several "rules of thumb" are offered for estimating standard errors under various circumstances. The following are appended: (1) Weights and Nonresponse Adjustments; and (2) Design Effects and Sampling Errors.

Its primary purpose is to provide a compilation of statistical information covering the broad field of American education--from pre-kindergarten through graduate school--drawn from government and private sources, but especially from surveys and other activities led by NCES (National Center for Education Statistics) part of the Institute for Education Sciences (IES). The digest contains data on the number of schools, students, and teachers, as well as statistics on educational attainment, finances, libraries, technology, and international comparisons. Details on population trends, education attitudes, labor force characteristics, and federal aid supplies helpful background for evaluating the education data. This statistical reference could be helpful to parents choosing schools for their children as well as for teachers, librarians, and public administrators as it tracks enrollment, population trends and key areas of studies with student progress. It also tracks the post-secondary/college level detailing undergraduate tuition and room/board ESTIMATE costs at private nonprofit institutions, private for profit institutions and public institutions. It also tallies the number of postsecondary degrees and provides some gender demographics in this area. The Digest contains seven chapters: All Levels of Education, Elementary and Secondary Education, Postsecondary Education, Federal Programs for Education and Related Activities, Outcomes of Education, International Comparisons of Education, and Libraries and Adult Education. Preceding these chapters is an Introduction that provides a brief overview of current trends in American education, which supplements the tabular materials in chapters 1 through 7. The Digest concludes with three appendixes. Improving Measurement of Productivity in Higher Education presents an analytically well-defined concept of productivity in higher education and recommends empirically valid and operationally practical guidelines for measuring it. Book excerpt: Using 60 tables and 60 figures, this report depicts vocational education in the United States as it has evolved over two decades, 1969 to 1990. The report examines patterns of program participation, selected student outcomes, and the characteristics of teachers in both secondary and postsecondary vocational education. It also provides some information on the academic curriculum. Most of the information is presented for single points in time, but some time series data are also reported. Data for the report were taken from many of the large national data systems supported by the National Center for Education Statistics. A few highlights of the report are the following: (1) in the high school senior class of 1987, 98 percent of all public high school graduates completed at least one course in vocational education during the high school years, with 90 percent of those students taking courses preparing them for specific occupations; (2) students with disabilities were more likely than students without disabilities to be heavy concentrators in vocational education; (3) about 62 percent of students in 1982 attended at least one postsecondary institution in 1984; (3) the number of high school seniors taking vocational courses in 1980 was 11 percent higher than the number taking such courses in 1972; (4) vocational and nonvocational teachers tended to have similar characteristics; and (5) about 6 percent of the United States' population of 18- to 34-year-olds was enrolled in postsecondary vocational courses in 1990. The report contains a glossary and appendixes with 60 tables of standard errors for the tables and data sources and technical notes. (KC)
