Book The Texas 36th Division A History

Download or read book The Texas 36th Division A History written by Bruce Brager and published by Eakin Press. This book was released on 2023-05-29 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is an encompassing and insightful history of the distinguished 36th Division, which traces back to the 1870s and officially formed for World War I. In the Second World War, the 36th led the first contested Allied landing in Europe and gave the Fifth Army “the key” to Rome. Readers interested in early Texas and Western history, the Civil War, Reconstruction, the world wars, and the continuing debate over the best structure for the American military, will enjoy this exciting adventure story. The 36th Division was formed in 1917, just after the United States entered World War I. The division's documented ancestors in the Texas National Guard, the Texas Volunteer Guard, and the Texas militia trace back to the 1870s. The tradition in which the 36th played so great a part even predates the 1836 defense of the Alamo. This history explores the division's origins and also goes "over there" with the 36th for combat in World War I, chronicles the division in state National Guard service between the world wars, and witnesses its federalization in 1940, followed by combat training in 1940-1942 and combat action in Italy and France during the Second World War.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is an authoritative history on the Army Air Defense Artillery Branch on Fort Bliss, Texas. Fort Bliss in 1940 was a cavalry post located on the Texas border. The post itself occupied the sixth location of what had been called Fort Bliss. In the summer of 1940 a number of Army National Guard antiaircraft regiments were called to active duty to spend one year protecting American cities and territories from air attack. In September the first antiaircraft regiment, the 202nd Coast Artillery (Antiaircraft) Regiment, arrived at Fort Bliss. Over the next four years the post became an antiaircraft training center and finally the Army antiaircraft training center. After the war, Fort Bliss became the premier guided missile testing and training center for the Army. All of the Nike missile battalions deployed to protect American cities during the Cold War trained there. As time passed, Fort Bliss expanded to 1.1 million acres, one of the largest Army posts in the world. By 1946, the antiaircraft arm was the owner of Fort Bliss. By 1957, the post had become the Air Defense Center and School for the United States Army. This book is the story of that progression until the Base Realignment and Closure announcement in 2005. By 2011, the Air Defense Artillery Center and School will be located at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. This will end the era of Air Defense Artillery ownership of Fort Bliss, Texas

Book The Houston Light Guards

Download or read book The Houston Light Guards written by Bruce A. Olson and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 1118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This study evaluated the post-Reconstruction militia in Texas and links trends there to the contemporary roles of the American postbellum militia and National Guard through 1940. This analysis uses the Houston Light Guards as a case study, yet the unit was by no means unique. The study focuses on the Houston Light Guards? involvement in the political, social and economic events of the city and its environs, demonstrates interaction with the community, as well as its role during racial, labor and political crises. Linked with white resurgence in the New South, the militia perpetuated and romanticized the memory of the Confederacy and the Lost Cause. For the most part, membership represented the upper classes of Southern society and insured a smooth transfer of power from the antebellum Old Guard who had redeemed the state and local governments to younger male heirs"--Abstract.
