Book National Dam Safety Program Congers Lake Dam Inventory Number NY 972 Passaic River Basin Lower Hudson River Area Rockland County New York Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Dam Safety Program Congers Lake Dam Inventory Number NY 972 Passaic River Basin Lower Hudson River Area Rockland County New York Phase I Inspection Report written by Granville Kester (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examination of available documents and a visual inspection of the dam and appurtenant structures did not reveal conditions which constitute an immediate hazard to human life or property. It has been determined that the dam would be overtopped for all storms exceeding approximately 23 percent of the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF). Therefore, the spillway is adjudged 'seriously inadequate', and the dam is assessed as unsafe, non-emergency. It is recommended that, within three months of owner notification, detailed hydrologic and hydraulic investigations of the structure should be undertaken to more accurately determine the site-specific characteristics of the watershed and their effects upon the overtopping potential of the dam. The results of this investigation and analyses will determine the appropriate remedial measures required to achieve a spillway capacity adequate to discharge the outflow from at least the 1/2 PMF. In the interim, a detailed emergency action plan must be developed and implemented during periods of unusually heavy precipitation. Also, around-the-clock surveillance must be provided during these periods.

Download or read book National Dam Safety Program Lake Suzanne Inventory Number N Y 760 Hudson River Basin Rockland County New York Phase I Inspection Report written by Eugene O'Brien and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The spillway is about 24 feet wide, ungated and has a sill 2 feet wide and 1.6 feet below the top of the dam. A 16-inch diameter cast iron reservoir drain is located near the left end of the spillway. The examination of documents and the visual inspection of Lake Suzanne did not reveal conditions which constitute an immediate hazard to human life or property. However, the dam has some deficiencies which require further investigation and remedial action. Using the Corps of Engineers screening criteria for review of spillway adequacy, it has been determined that the dam would be overtopped for all storms exceeding approximately 4 percent of the PMF.

Book National Dam Safety Program Tivoli Lake Dam Inventory Number N Y 52 Hudson River Basin Rockland County New York Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Dam Safety Program Tivoli Lake Dam Inventory Number N Y 52 Hudson River Basin Rockland County New York Phase I Inspection Report written by Eugene O'Brien and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The examination of documents and the visual inspection of Tivoli Lake (Cranberry Lake) did not reveal conditions which constitute an immediate hazard to human life or property. However, the dam has some deficiencies which require further investigations and remedial actions. Using Corps of Engineers screening criteria for the initial review of spillway adequacy, it has been determined that the dam would be overtopped for all storms exceeding approximately 38 percent of the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF). The spillway is therefore, adjudged as seriously inadequate and the dam is assessed as unsafe, non-emergency. The classification of 'unsafe' applied to a dam because of a seriously inadequate spillway is not meant to connote the same degree of emergency as would be associated with an 'unsafe' classification applied for a structural deficiency. It does mean, however, that based on an initial screening, and preliminary computations, there appears to be a serious deficiency in spillway capacity so that if a severe storm were to occur, overtopping and failure of the dam would take place, significantly increasing the hazard to loss of life downstream from the dam.

It is approximately 1000 feet south of New York State Route 217. This dam was constructed about the year 1860 by the High Rock Knitting Company, who used it for industrial purposes. Visual observations revealed several deficiencies on this structure. The following items were noted: Voids created by displaced stones on the downstream face. Voids ranged in size from 1 cubic foot up to 60 cubic feet; Leakage through and beneath the structure; Weathered stones which compose the dam that can be broken off by hand; Deteriorated concrete on the crest of the dam, and Brush and vines growing on the dam.

Book National Dam Safety Program Lake Mahopac Dam Inventory Number NY 1329 Lower Hudson River Basin Putnam County New York Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Dam Safety Program Lake Mahopac Dam Inventory Number NY 1329 Lower Hudson River Basin Putnam County New York Phase I Inspection Report written by Eugene O'Brien and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The examination of documents and the visual inspection of Lake Mahopac Dam and its appurtenant structures did not reveal conditions which constitute an immediate hazard to human life and property. Using Corps of Engineers screening criteria, it has been determined that the dam would be overtopped for all storms exceeding approximately 56 percent of Probable Maximum Flood (PMF). The maximum spillway discharge capacity is 7.9 percent of the PMF peak outflow. The spillway is, therefore, adjudged as 'inadequate'. The following remedial measures should be performed within 12 months from notification: (1) Missing portions of the upstream stone masonry wall should be repaired. (2) Brush and shrubbery should be removed from the embankment, spillway-reservoir drain structure and downstream channel. Provide a program of periodic cutting and or mowing of the dam surfaces, spillway-reservoir drain structure and the downstream channel. (3) The collected debris at the spillway-reservoir drain structure and in the downstream channel should be removed and hauled away from the dam. (4) A program of periodic inspections and maintenance of the dam and appurtenances should be provided, including yearly operation and lubrication of the reservoir drain and its control facilities. This information should be documented for future reference. (5) An emergency action plan for the project should be developed.

Book National Dam Safety Program Helderberg Lake Dam Inventory Number NY276 Lower Hudson River Basin Albany County New York Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Dam Safety Program Helderberg Lake Dam Inventory Number NY276 Lower Hudson River Basin Albany County New York Phase I Inspection Report written by George Koch and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Helderberg Lake Dam consists of a 285 foot long earth embankment with concrete cutoff wall and a 55 foot wide concrete channel spillway. The maximum height above the original stream bed is approximately 35 feet. Both the upstream and downstream slopes of the earth embankment are 1 vertical to 2 horizontal, and the crest width is 12 feet. The dam was reconstructed in 1944 after a failure of the original structure in 1938. The spillway crest was increased in length from 35 feet to 55 feet and lowered 2 feet. The original cutoff wall which is founded on bedrock was lengthened and increased in height by 2.25 feet. A 20 in. drain pipe was installed and incorporated into the tunnel that was in the original dam. The examination of documents and visual inspection of Helderberg Lake Dam and appurtenant structures did not reveal conditions which constitute a hazard to human life or property. The discharge capacity of the spillway is inadequate for all storms in excess of 50% of the PMF (Probable Maximum Flood).

Book National Dam Safety Program Cortlandt Lake Dam Inventory Number N Y 85 Lower Hudson River Basin Westchester County New York Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Dam Safety Program Cortlandt Lake Dam Inventory Number N Y 85 Lower Hudson River Basin Westchester County New York Phase I Inspection Report written by George Koch and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report provides information and analysis on the physical condition of the dam as of the report date. Information and analysis are based on visual inspection of the dam by the performing organization. Visual inspection of this dam did not reveal conditions which constitute an immediate hazard to human life or property. However, the dam has some deficiencies which require further engineering investigations and remedial work. The structural stability analysis performed for this report indicated that the stability of the spillway section of the dam is questionable. The analysis indicated that the dam was unstable for all conditions studied. The analysis performed was based on available information and assumptions made may not reflect actual conditions. However, the analysis does indicate that there are serious questions about the stability of this structure and further investigations are required. The inspection revealed a semicircular wet area just beyond the downstream end of the left windwall. There was active clear seepage in this area which had caused some sloughing. It is recommended that within 3 months of the date of notification of the owner, investigations into the structural stability and seepage problems on this dam be commenced. The structural stability investigations should include subsurface explorations and concrete cores to obtain information about the structure and its foundation conditions. This data should then be incorporated into a detailed stability evaluation and, if necessary, modifications to the structure should then be designed.
