Book National Dam Inspection Program Wilmore Dam NDI ID Number 435 Ohio River Basin North Branch of Little Conemaugh River Cambria County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Dam Inspection Program Wilmore Dam NDI ID Number 435 Ohio River Basin North Branch of Little Conemaugh River Cambria County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report written by D'APPOLONIA CONSULTING ENGINEERS PITTSBURGH PA. and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Wilmore Dam is a masonry-gravity structure approximately 800 feet long with a maximum height of 40 feet from the downstream toe. Based on evaluation of the conditions as they existed on the dates of inspection (June 7 and 12, 1978) and as revealed by visual observations, the condition of Wilmore Dam is assessed to be good. The spillway does not have the recommended capacity to pass the probable maximum flood without overtopping. However, the dam is a masonry structure, and overtopping by the probable maximum flood would not significantly affect the stability of the dam. Therefore, the spillway capacity is considered to be adequate. However, during unusually heavy runoff, when overtopping might occur, an around-the-clock surveillance plan should be implemented to detect possible problems, such as rapid erosion of the abutments. It is recommended that the owner should develop a formal warning system to alert the downstream residents in the event of emergencies.

Book National Dam Inspection Program Shirf s Run Dam Ohio River Basin Unnamed Tributary of North Branch Blacklick Creek Cambria County Pennsylvania NDI I D Number PA 00438 DER I D Number 11 71 Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Dam Inspection Program Shirf s Run Dam Ohio River Basin Unnamed Tributary of North Branch Blacklick Creek Cambria County Pennsylvania NDI I D Number PA 00438 DER I D Number 11 71 Phase I Inspection Report written by Lawrence D. Andersen and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shirf's Run Dam consists of an earth embankment approximately 320 feet long with a maximum height of 15 feet from the downstream toe and a crest width of 10 feet. The upstream side of the dam is protected by riprap and the downstream slope is covered with grass. The spillway discharge facilities for the dam consist of an earth channel located at the right abutment. The outlet facilities consist of a 12-inch cast-iron pipe encased in concrete through the embankment. Based on the evaluation of the existing conditions, the condition of Shirf's Run dam is considered to be good. The only condition noted which requires attention is the lack of adequate erosion protection on the left side of the emergency spillway channel against the embankment. This condition is considered to pose breach potential in the event of large flows through the spillway. The flood discharge capacity of the dam was evaluated according to the recommended procedure and was found to pass approximately 50 percent of the probable maximum flood (PMF) without overtopping the embankment.

It is also recommended that the owner should take necessary measures to improve the accessibility of the site during high flows.

Book National Dam Inspection Program Storage Dam NDI I D Number PA 388 DER I D Number 24 47 Ohio River Basin Whetstone Branch of Little Toby Creek Elk County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Dam Inspection Program Storage Dam NDI I D Number PA 388 DER I D Number 24 47 Ohio River Basin Whetstone Branch of Little Toby Creek Elk County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report written by Lawrence D. Anderson and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Storage Dam consists of an earth embankment approximately 500 feet long with a maximum height of 36 feet from the downstream toe and a crest width of approximately 15 feet. The appurtenant structures of the dam consist of a combined primary and emergency spillway located on the left abutment (looking downstream) and outlet works near the right abutment. Based on the evaluation of the existing conditions, the condition of Storage Dam is considered to be good. Numerous seeps were observed along the left abutment, but these seeps are not considered to be a threat to the integrity of the embankment. However, a slump and an associated wet area were observed along the toe of the dam near the left abutment. This condition should be investigated and necessary repairs performed. The flood discharge capacity of the Storage Dam spillway was evaluated according to the recommended procedure and it was found to be 40 percent of the probable maximum flood (PMF) without overtopping the embankment. Therefore, according to the recommended criteria, the flood discharge capacity of the dam is classified to be inadequate.

Book National Dam Inspection Program Bentleyville Dam NDI ID Number PA 1096 DER ID Number 63 49 Ohio River Basin Tributary North Branch Pigeon Creek Washington County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Dam Inspection Program Bentleyville Dam NDI ID Number PA 1096 DER ID Number 63 49 Ohio River Basin Tributary North Branch Pigeon Creek Washington County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report written by and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dam appears to be in poor condition. No maintenance program exists for the dam and the lack of maintenance has led to a general deterioration of the structure. An upstream shut-off exists for the 12 in. drainline, but the capability of the valve to operate is questionable. Wet areas were observed on the downstream slope of the dam. One area observed at the right abutment contact; and a second wet area was observed on the downstream slope adjacent to the right spillway wingwall, approximately 10 feet below the right crest. The seepage should be investigated to ascertain its effects on the stability of the structure. The spillway is in a deteriorating condition and the concrete in the channel walls and channel bottom should be repaired. Undercutting of the channel floor if left unchecked could lead to the potential failure of the spillway structure. Brush and small trees were observed on the upstream and downstream slope. The brush and small trees should be removed in a controlled manner. (Author).

Book excerpt: Little Youghiogheny Site No. 7 consists of an earthfill embankment approximately 700 ft. long, with a maximum toe to crest height of 45 ft. and a crest width of 16 ft. The upstream embankment slope is inclined 4H:1V between the embankment toe and berm located at normal pool level, and 3H:1V between the berm and dam crest. The downstream embankment slope is inclined 2.5H:1V, and has a 10 ft. wide berm located 25 ft. below the top of the dam. Seepage control provisions consist of a filter trench collector system and a blanket drain and corrugated metal pipe outlet system. Filter trench extensions are located about 90 ft. upstream from the downstream embankment toe and are extended a maximum of 14 ft. below original ground. Collected seepage water is discharged into the outlet plunge pool. Flood discharge facilities consist of a principal spillway riser, located 325 ft. from the north abutment, and an emergency spillway channel located on the south abutment.

Book National Dam Inspection Program Little Blue Run Dam NDI ID Number PA 917 DER ID Number 4 49 Ohio River Basin Little Blue Run Beaver County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Dam Inspection Program Little Blue Run Dam NDI ID Number PA 917 DER ID Number 4 49 Ohio River Basin Little Blue Run Beaver County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report written by Lawrence D. Anderson and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the evaluation of the existing conditions on March 14 and April 16, 1979, the condition of Little Blue Run Dam is considered to be good. No conditions were noted at this time that would significantly affect the structural performance of the dam. The flood discharge facilities for the dam were designed to pass the probable maximum flood (PMF) without overtopping the embankment. Therefore, according to the recommended criteria, the flood discharge facilities of the dam are adequate. Presently, the pool elevation is approximately 170 feet below the dam crest level. The pool elevation is expected to reach spillway crest level in about the year 2010. The following recommendations should be implemented on a continuing basis: (1) The cracking observed on the crest should continue to be evaluated by the design engineers. Also, attention should be given to the slump and seepage observed on the left abutment. Erosion ditches on the right abutment should be filled; and (2) A formal warning system should be developed to alert the downstream residents in the event of emergencies.

Book National Dam Inspection Program Saxe Pond Dam NDI I D Number PA 729 DER ID Number 8 10 Susquehanna River Basin North Branch Mehoopany Creek Bradford County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Dam Inspection Program Saxe Pond Dam NDI I D Number PA 729 DER ID Number 8 10 Susquehanna River Basin North Branch Mehoopany Creek Bradford County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report written by R. Jeffrey Kimball and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dam is located approximately 2 miles northwest of the Village of Colley, Wilmot Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. The inspection consisted of: Visual inspection of the retaining structure, abutments and toe; Examination of the spillway facilities, exposed portion of any outlet works and other appurtenant works; Observations affecting the runoff potential of the drainage basin; and Evaluation of the downstream area hazard potential. The dam appears to be in good condition and adequately maintained. From a brief survey conducted during the inspection, it was noted that the low spot on the crest of the dam exits at the top left edge of the spillway crest. It was observed during the inspection that a new concrete cap had been placed on the structure. The concrete appeared to be in good condition. The dam was constructed with dry rubble masonry with an upstream earthfill. No concrete exists on the downstream face of the structure or on the bench located along the downstream face of the structure. The rubble masonry appeared to be in good condition and well maintained.

In accordance with the recommended guidelines, the Spillway Design Flood (SDF) is considered to be the PMF (Probable Maximum Flood). Results of the hydrologic and hydraulic analysis indicate that the facility is capable of passing and/or storing the PMF without overtopping the dam or dike. Consequently, the spillway is considered adequate.

Book National Dam Inspection Program Little Shenango Dam NDI ID Number PA 00246 PennDER Number 43 54 Ohio River Basin Calvin Clark Run Mercer County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Dam Inspection Program Little Shenango Dam NDI ID Number PA 00246 PennDER Number 43 54 Ohio River Basin Calvin Clark Run Mercer County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report written by BAKER (MICHAEL) JR INC BEAVER PA. and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Little Shenango Dam (PA 490) is a homogeneous earth floodwater retarding dam designed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Soil Conservation Service. The dam has a crest length of 430 feet, a maximum height of 45 feet, a storage volume of 472 acre-feet at spillway crest level, and a storage volume of 19 acre-feet at normal pool level. The dam was found to be in generally poor condition at the time of inspection. The inspection did disclose potential problems with seepage and piping in the dam embankment and abutments. A detailed engineering investigation of seepage, piping, erosion, and structural stability of the dam should be initiated as expeditiously as possible. Hydraulic/hydrologic evaluations revealed that the spillway will pass the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) without overtopping the dam. The spillway is therefore considered 'adequate'.

Book National Dam Inspection Program Pine Creek Dam North Park Lake NDI I D Number PA 467 DER I D Number 2 26 Ohio River Basin Pine Creek Allegheny County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Dam Inspection Program Pine Creek Dam North Park Lake NDI I D Number PA 467 DER I D Number 2 26 Ohio River Basin Pine Creek Allegheny County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report written by Lawrence D. Anderson and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pine Creek Dam consists of an earth embankment approximately 1130 feet long with a maximum height of about 33 feet. As built, the crest of the dam was 60 feet wide with a 2 horizontal to 1 vertical sslope on both the upstream and downstream faces. Over the years, significant fill has been placed on the downstream side of the embankment, increasing the crest width to 300 to 400 feet. A two-lane roadway crosses the crest of the dam. Near the left abutment (looking downstream) the side slope of the spillway discharge channel defines the toe of the present embankment. However, for the remaining major portion of the embankment, no discernible demarcation exists between the embankment and the natural ground that can be identified as the toe of the embankment. Fill placed on the downstream side of theembankment gradually merges to the right abutment. The flood discharge facilities for the dam consist of a combined primary and emergency spillway located near the left abutment. The spillway structures include an ogee overflow section, circular arc in plane view, which discharges into a rectangular concrete discharge channel. A single-span highway bridge crosses the spillway discharge channel, approximately 70 feet downstream from the crest of the overflow section. The crest of theogee overflow section of the spillway is located at an elevation approximately 10 feet below the low point on the crest of the dam.

Book National Dam Inspection Program Penelec Retention Dam NDI I D Number PA 00809 PennDer I D Number 32 78 Ohio River Basin Tributary to the Conemaugh River Indiana County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Dam Inspection Program Penelec Retention Dam NDI I D Number PA 00809 PennDer I D Number 32 78 Ohio River Basin Tributary to the Conemaugh River Indiana County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report written by Bernard M. Mihalcin and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on a visual inspection, operational history, and available engineering data, the dam is considered to be in good condition. The size classification of the facility is small and its hazard classification is considered to be high. In accordance with the recommended guidelines, the Spillway Design Flood (SDF) for the facility ranges between the 1/2 PMF (Probable Maximum Flood) and the PMF. Due to the high potential for damage to downstream structures and loss of life, the SDF for the facility is considered to be the PMF. Results of the hydrologic and hydraulic analysis indicate the facility will pass and/or store a flood of PMF magnitude. Consequently, the spillway is considered adequate.
